Mmaruda Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 It feels like forever and I've only been stuck at home for two weeks. It's not troublesome, just weird. Normally I'd work from home at least 2 days a week, but moving my butt to the office sort of made things a little more orderly. I'm generally a stay-at-home person, but what bugs me now is that the days blend so much, it's hard to keep a well regulated routine. On the flip side I can now game and do coding coursed to all my heart's content and... I feel more like reading books. I used to go out cycling in times like this, watch birds getting all crazy and currently it's when flocks of geese and cranes return and I'm missing all of it. At least I can see those crazy fliers do their thing from my window and there is also a surprising amount of squirrels moping around. So... I took all my gear off the shelf and went simming. And guys, I don't what is with the magic of flight sims, but while other games are nice and easy and accessible (well not all... Dark Souls and the lot), but with IL-2 I guess it's just treading familiar ground. It's relaxing and engaging at the same time. Here's what I'd like to discuss: How are you guys doing? I know it's tough in some countries, does a few hours of BoX a day help? A few mates I flew with yesterday mentioned there is a surge in players recently. What's up with that? Is IL-2 trending now? We getting into the Escape from Tarkov phenomenon territory or something? Any cool streamers on Twitch you'd recommend? I already subscribe to everyone I know of on YT. Any good advice to practice and improve in situational awareness? Asking for a friend here. ? Jason's new video on DM improvements blew my mind but also makes me concerned - less clip-wing kills seems good, but what about downing tougher planes when you're low on ammo? The Spit has terrible loiter capability because of not enough dakka. What do you think? We gonna have to aim better or rounds that don't do crits will have more of an impact? More seriously, this whole situation already takes a huge dump on the economy and it will get worse, do you think it can affect flight sims in any way? Lastly, a question for any local scientists and big brained people in general: how come we're in this crisis so deep in just a few months when the SARS epidemic seems to have been similar, but didn't spread in such manner. Is it the time of year, less travel restrictions, maybe the governments screwed up? I know this isn't really all that IL-2 focused, maybe it should be in a different department (mods please don't kill me), but the situation is... I don't know, just surreal and flying IL-2 so far has been the best coping therapy... Which makes it even more weird. It's gotten to a point when I'm literally scared to do shopping. This community has always been super-wholesome. I guess I just want to talk to you guys. ?
DD_fruitbat Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 (edited) Well, flying co-ops with 17 other dangerdogz at this very moment, from all over the place, its a nice release from everything and good fun to boot. Edited March 22, 2020 by DD_fruitbat 1

DD_fruitbat Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 Somebody else took a screenie of teamspeak whilst we were flying, no pics from me today but if you search DD_Arthur here he's posted lots of vids from other nights shenanigans. 2
TWC_Ace Posted March 22, 2020 Posted March 22, 2020 (edited) Well, in hte middle of the coronavirus pandemic we had (this moring at 6:25) an earthquake (magnitude 5.5 Richter) in the capital od Croatia - Zagreb. After that another one (5.0 magnitude). Older bulidings (specially in the downtown area where even the top of the cathedral fell of)) collapsed partially. Many cars destroyed, some ppl injured and a 15 yr old girl fighting for her life in the hospital. Half of the city lost power and water dude to damage but its quickly repaired. Last such earthquake here was in 1880. Ppl went out after the first strike, still with the masks, since corona. On top of all that it was the coldest day (freezy wind too) of this "winter" (was very mild). People were nervous anyways because of the virus and now this. BTW, spirit within ppl is still strong, some making jokes via wapp and facebook groups, the only way to survive all this. Ofcourse and to stay at home. The good thing is that many are helping older citizens.....in the the middle of the strike the mothers and just born babies went out half naked on this cold weather since some hospitals are old (mainly in the downtown). I feel like shit tbh but I was flying tonite. Because that is what Im doing for years. Maybe this was all with purpose because the world became a place of haters and ignorants. This community has always been super-wholesome. I guess I just want to talk to you guys. ? Hey Mmaruda! Glad you were able to get going with IL-2 and enjoy it as much as the rest of us do. It's been a trying time and escaping to IL-2 for a little while is a really nice thing to be able to do. Some great questions... can take a stab at some of them at least How are you guys doing? I know it's tough in some countries, does a few hours of BoX a day help? I'm in Canada. We're in states of emergency all over the country. I've been working at home for a week now and have been doing emergency meetings for many weeks before that. Things for me personally a little bit settled for now at home but long term its hard to know. In a crisis like this, crisis managers tend to suggest taking things one step at a time. It's very hard to do anything but worry on long term consequences (and I'm a worrier by nature :)). A few mates I flew with yesterday mentioned there is a surge in players recently. What's up with that? Is IL-2 trending now? We getting into the Escape from Tarkov phenomenon territory or something? A bunch of things have happened recently. IL-2: Battle of Bodenplatte being released is part of the phenomenon. Some people suggested that only a jump to the Pacific would bring the player numbers but I think the inclusion of western aircraft of any type has really bolstered the interest people have in the series. Kuban did that a bit but Bodenplatte really helped get into peoples imagination and rekindled the interest. There's also I think a critical mass moment where the series has enough aircraft and enough variety that people look at it and see possibility and interest for them so that prompts them to buy in on one title and then quickly buy the rest when they want more. There's also a bit of a coming together of the IL-2 community and more compelling multiplayer servers and server related events are happening all over the place. It bolsters the numbers and brings even more people in. I think we're going to see more aircraft fly off streaming oil/fuel/coolant and then crash into the ground rather than instant wing folding. We'll take a bit to get used to it but I think it should be fine eventually. The short ammo duration of the Spitfire Vb I think will continue to be a problem but maybe not much more than it is already. More seriously, this whole situation already takes a huge dump on the economy and it will get worse, do you think it can affect flight sims in any way? Hard to say. Short term there are benefits to everyone being at home and more people have time for hobbies that they were too busy to do. Long term the economic situation is going to be challenging. That said, with history as a guide, after WWI and the Spanish Flu of 1918-1919, the economy came roaring back in 1920-21. They called them the roaring 20's. I think we are going to see a shift and I'm looking forward to some forward thinking economists to dream up what that will look like. Lastly, a question for any local scientists and big brained people in general: how come we're in this crisis so deep in just a few months when the SARS epidemic seems to have been similar, but didn't spread in such manner. Is it the time of year, less travel restrictions, maybe the governments screwed up? Being Canadian and remembering the SARS outbreak in Toronto, the "advantage" we had with SARS is that people who got it became sick quickly and didn't have a chance to spread it around. We locked it down very quickly here before it got around. COVID-19 is a different beast. Some people are VERY sick others hardly have any symptoms but they easily spread it to others. Also... we may have gotten lucky the last time. Time will tell. I have some faith with every county on the planet contributing research and working to find solutions that we are going to find solutions. Probably more than one. The folks doing that need the resources and time to do it and the rest of us need to stay home, isolate, and play some IL-2!
FlyingNutcase Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 New Zealand's on max lockdown in a couple of days, so more IL2 hours coming soon. Stay well all.

Also... we may have gotten lucky the last time. Well, here in Japan the situation still doesn't look especially threatening, although we have probably been exposed almost from the beginning by lots of Chinese tourists, who just kept coming even weeks after the first announcements (last few years has seen a BIG increase in Chinese tourists coming to Japan). So I think compared to Europe and North America we got a "head-start" of perhaps 2-3 weeks with the virus. Yet so far only about 40 people have been reported dead due to COVID-19. To me that doesn't look that dangerous (last year alone, about 3000 people in Japan seems to have died due to "ordinary" flu). Sadly, mass media generally prefers to report only negative news. For them, bad news are good news. I believe that one of the most important things right now is to keep yourself in good shape, both physically and mentaly, as it has been shown that most people who got into trouble with this virus are older and often also have already been sick with other diseases, e.g. people with a poor immune system (those people definately have to be careful). In this sense, I'm not so sure about the wisdom of locking everyone inside their homes, as that could very well weaken many people, making them more vulnerable to the virus. On the other hand, a certain degree of discipline is required for everyone to make sure we won't infect other people. Well, just my two Yen.

The reasons are beyond me, however, downplaying this virus is not a good idea. The number of cases is spiking all over the place and there's not a single person working in healthcare that will tell you that this is being overplayed by the media. Sometimes they do that, yes, but this is not one of those times. Take it seriously folks, self isolate.

Perspective is a good thing. But here morons use the covid 19 as a excuse to front the idea we must help our selves and not rest of the world. I beg the difference. It is now we should help everyone. From a Ethical and self preservation standpoint it is essential we stop this pandemic globally. It will never end if we don’t We are in the mids of it. European Union refused Norway to have its own medicine depot. This have made us less capable to help others. Like all other countries we have to grab every shipment of vitals supplies to our self. We cannot at this moment help Africa with any vital supplies , even now when they need it most. Things are hard. , but we havent seen anything yet, when this pandemic hits refugee camps , tragedy and wild spread is a fact 1 1
Toots_LeGuerre Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 Out of confusion comes direction. As a 'former' World Traveler'--I left Italy a month before the CV struck, a 'squeaker' if ever one was-- and now in self imposed house arrest in Texas, leading the monastic life, I am diverting funds that would have gone to travel to build the most powerful computer for IL2 BoS that my rinky-dink wallet allows. I feel very fortunate to have a passion that I can exercise from my own room. And always "Wash them hands, buckaroos!"

We will have to wait and see when it comes out but I'd assume that a wing does not need to fall off to make a plane unflyable. You still have leaks, ammo explosions, fires, engine damage, damaged surfaces, pilot kills, etc to effectively take out the enemy. We definitely have a few exciting patches ahead. Jason's video mentions they will work on engine damage next, which I don't know if it means damage to weapons, or also the engine timers and general damage when you push it to the limits.

69th_Bazzer Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 (edited) In my tiny rural corner of the U.S., my wife (health dept.) and I (prosecutor) are part of the emergency operations center by day. Needless to say, it is extremely stressful. Evenings we worry over our toddlers. Flying BoX at night for a couple hours when the family is in bed is an absolute blessing for relief and respite. Stress levels have definitely affected my flying, but I can't express how much it helps to focus entirely on something else for a couple hours each night (or right now here on a lunch break). Advice to improve SA in multiplayer...I always remind myself to just be patient and sit on the taxiway and wait for someone to fly with, especially if they are on teamspeak with me. 4 eyes are so much more effective than 2, and the more the better. Otherwise, check six, check six, have I checked six in the last 10 seconds? Check six! Edited March 23, 2020 by 69th_Bazzer 1
[TDH]Meankitty731 Posted March 23, 2020 Posted March 23, 2020 I am in the US Military. I was put on notice last week of a deployment. We are generally ready at the house. Found the Easy mission generator and am churning out missions for us to play while we all wait for our marching orders. Oh, and the skins. Im now really busy. LOL
Mmaruda Posted March 24, 2020 Author Posted March 24, 2020 Government today issued a directive forbidding more than 2 people to meet (excluding families). Only going out for food, work, medicine and walking your dog is allowed. Max people in public transport is limited to the number of seats divided by two. I doubt this is realistic to enforce, especially in smaller towns and especially with public transport which has always been super crowded. All recreational areas are closed. This feels like they're in full panic mode regarding the healthcare system to deal with the issue. I fear shopping panic is going to be in full swing today. And here I am working from home, almost finished, talking to mates on discord already. It's surreal.

40plus Posted March 24, 2020 Posted March 24, 2020 (edited) Holding my baby girl (our first). Born yesterday, March 23rd. Hell of a thing, giving birth in a pandemic lock down. Amps the stress levels skyward to where the HE-111s should be flying instead of at tree top. The hospital here in Canaderp is doing an incredible job managing it though. Easy to find parking ?. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be flying much even though it would be a welcome distraction. Once I get past my new dad vacation time, I'll likely be working from home for quite some time. My office has prepped up for the long haul. At least two months. Hoping to scratch out at least a few hours to get back to getting shot down. The pros need their canon fodder afterall. Happy flying friends and, above all else, stay safe. Edited March 25, 2020 by pfrances 3 8

My wife and I would probably get by even though we are a bit older, but if we get it and transmit it then things will be bad. I just went out today (CVS pharmacy drive through only) for the first time in nine days. As for the economy - we'll see. The more people listen and do not transmit the sooner this thing ends. Now I just stay at home and write code ... This is one of the great opportunities this situation presents - realising how many people (college, language school & school students, workers) who could actually cover some or all of their activities from home. That would be the easiest way to tame the peak time traffic situation, instead of building more motorway lanes, plus have a positive environmental impact. Anyway, stay well. NZ goes into full lockdown in 7 hours, for 4 weeks. This is gonna be interesting...
PatrickAWlson Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 @FlyingNutcase Same to you and all - stay well.
Lusekofte Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Kind on a home office too. Waiting for my allowance to pass county borders in ordrr to get to work 3
Voyager Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Part of what causes the stress is uncertainty and lack of control over the outcome. I suspect flying helps with it, in part because it is one of the few areas where one is almost entirely in charge of one's own destiny. 1
Lusekofte Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 (edited) My wife is very afraid. And I find myself not able to be afraid. The phrase from wsr movies “If your not afraid your stupid” , come to mind. But I got this practical view on it, if we do what we can to avoid it. Then what more can we do? I got a daughter with down syndrome. She might be in the risk group. We take very care for not bringing it to her any way we can Edited March 25, 2020 by 216th_LuseKofte 1
VampireNZ Posted March 26, 2020 Posted March 26, 2020 That's exactly it, you concern yourself with the things you can influence and act accordingly, you learn to accept the rest.

Congrats! Working from home as well, Skype, Teams, phone and email. It works, but daily standup doesn't quite feel the same. Don't miss the commute though so that's fine. Still relatively sane, I guess - enjoying the nice weather and hanging out with the missus. Take care, everyone!
