...thus giving the 262's hours to shoot them down ?

April Fool's Day brings back memories.

In the spring of 1998, learning to fly in Miami

my flight instructor said, "Okay, you've learned to fly. I'm setting up your FAA check ride for Private Pilot's License." (PPL)

Two days later he called and said, "Your scheduled at 1 PM on April 1st"

I protested, "But that's April Fool's Day."

"Yeah, I know," he said. "Just seemed appropriate somehow."

Anyway I didn't scare the FAA man too bad and didn't wreck the airplane, so they gave me a pilot's license.

Flash forward to spring 2017.

My Uncle John, who was on a minesweeper in the Pacific for the duration of WW 2

came home and learned to fly on a yellow Piper Cub, which is what you learned to fly on then.

He buzzed the farm regularly when I was five year old kid, scaring the adults out of their wits,

but instilling in me the desire to be a pilot.

That's where I got the aviation bug, from my Uncle John.

I got something else to, I found out after he passed away at age in 2017 at age 95.

Going through his things, his daughter, my cousin, came to me the next week.

"I want you to have this," she said.

She handed me Uncle John's pilot's logbook.

Curious about when Uncle John got his PPL, I went through the pages.

There it was: April 1st, 1948, exactly fifty year to the day after I got my PPL.

April Fool's Day!

Not just a national holiday, but a family tradition.

(I stuck UJ's logbook in my flight bag with mine, so when I go flying,

Uncle John goes with me. Another family tradition. Ha ha.)

Very nice story vonNutz. If you haven't already, maybe you should get your tailwheel endorsement in, what else, a Piper Cub (maybe even yellow).  :salute:
