Bf 109 G6 cockpit retexture project!

Hello everybody,

After seeing that the plane textures are availible to download on this very forum, we have started a small retexturing project for the Bf 109 G6 collector of Il-2 series in our squadron. This is just a test to see how far the game handles high quality textures and to expand our knowledge in game textures.

We think the default textures are good, but we will try to add a personal touch to it. Some damage and some other cosmetic features will be included.

Why the G6? Because it's a collector and it will be used in Normandy alongside the late variant. The reason is also the future campaing of "Big Week" that we will also try to develop after the first batch of BON aircraft is released.

Even if some people complain about the game engine, actually, it is capable of handling beautiful cockpits. We still have a long way to go but this is what we accomplished so far in just some weeks.

Only the panels have been edited and they are not final yet. We have 4K textures on them and we think that when the instruments are edited, it will be look really pretty. Some changes or additions will be done.

As far as the installation goes, you will only need to drop the files in textures/planes/109g6. Nothing more. There are some issues with some models as they share textures but this is not the case.

Here are some pics of the progress:

Sure! This is the work so far. Remember that some parts are finished, some are not, even in the same instrument or gauge.

@LF_Gallahad

Is it possible to have the instruments glass reflection more realistic?? It seems as if there is no glass at all.

By the way keep up the great work guys!!

Unlikely, but nothing is impossible. We will see in the future as we want to promise what we are able to deliver. Anything else will be cherry on the top! Thanks for understanding

Glass is there, but we have chosen to not make it more reflective. Don't ask. Decision long ago not involving me. The good news is that with DS we hope to add cockpit reflections into the mix including on gauges. Again, this is a hope so can't promise, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

That are awesome news Jason!

So far, the engine is capable of beautiful cockpits and with those reflections, they could be even more pretty! Thanks for dropping by!

The only thing that can be done is tinting the glass the color of the sky.

IIRC the 109´s textures handle reflectivity and opacity through its alpha channel.

Wouldn´t it be possible to at least simulate the way light hits convex surfaces by having the outer part of the glass be more reflective than the middle part?

Also @LF_Gallahad have you considered doing the rim of the Galland Panzer?

It looks like one of the lowest res parts and really doesn´t do the rest of the cockpit justice.

The only thing the alpha does is specular power, ie how bright the specular is, for most cockpits (+ alpha cuts).

DS would be an important face lift for this sim ?

This looks great :) I love flying the G6, so I’ll definitely keep an eye on this project!

A little update!

We are improving some of the textures as we understand better how they work!

Some really nice improvements! Looks much more ‘real’ somehow. Well done.
