molotovb Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 So I've got a logitiech extreme 3d pro now. It feels like no matter how much I practice, fine tuning my aim is quite impossible (to fire on targets.) Lots of different settings, lots of hours following AI. I'm wondering if anyone else has upgraded from this joystick and felt like it was an improvement to their aiming abilities?
Sandhill Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Getting a better stick will not make you a better pilot, but it will sure improve your ability to aim.
Panzerlang Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 The stick is only a percentage of the problem and especially so with any sim that has a 1:1 ratio between the stick and the sim's control-surfaces. To overcome this you need a stick with a longer shaft. This, effectively, 'dampens' your physical inputs. Instead of your arm moving the stick one centimeter and seeing the plane cavort wildly (desktop stick) you extend the shaft and see your input have much less effect. Since fitting a 10cm extension to my stick my gunnery has improved massively. We've just this year learned what the Russians (Viks and crew) have known since Il2-1946 was the sim of choice. Yes, hardware (the right hardware) can make you a better pilot.
molotovb Posted April 19, 2014 Author Posted April 19, 2014 Thanks for the great info, will try some adjustments in game and then switch to something new if that doesn't work.
Sokol1 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Do a test with Joytester2 to know how god or bad your actual stick is: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/3289-new-saitek-x-55-rhino-hotas/page-4?do=findComment&comment=103925 Sokol1
Felix58 Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Hi Siggi, Interesting comment re the stick extension. Is there a link on how to do this?
Azuredragon Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 Yes, When i went from the 3d pro to the X52 pro, the difference was amazing. The stick on the x52 require less force to move it and i was able to make better adjustments with the x52 pro.
Johnny_Red Posted April 20, 2014 Posted April 20, 2014 I have a TM warthog and i cant aim for shit. Sometimes I think I wasted my money but I'll keep practicing, its not the stick, its me

andyw248 Posted April 21, 2014 Posted April 21, 2014 Hi Siggi, Interesting comment re the stick extension. Is there a link on how to do this? There was also an interesting discussion of stick extensions at: http://forum.il2sturmovik.com/topic/4094-sim-will-sell-joystick-extensions/. Specifically, how to do some low-cost experimenting with a piece of PVC tube and some duct tape.
Skipper- Posted May 27, 2014 Posted May 27, 2014 You might also be surprised at the difference a good set of pedals can make, having total control of yaw input in a dogfight makes it that much easier to keep them in your sights!
Jade_Monkey Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 I also have the 3D Pro (i get my X55 tmorrow) and it's really hard to aim with such a wobbly stick. Any stick that is not as loose will definitely improve your aiming. However, as someone said, a better stick will not make you a better pilot overall. The reason for my upgrade was the lack of buttons on the stick kept me going back to the keyboard and I want to have all or most controls on the HOTAS so I dont have to swith in the middle of my flight.
