SARFlytitus Posted January 31, 2020 Posted January 31, 2020 (edited) Hi everyone! I felt the need to open a new topic related to the two skins of the p-51 that I recently uploaded to the forum, as I made some small but important corrections to them. I thank those who liked the aforementioned skins by inviting them to download the correct versions by clicking on the following links! The rule that the more we look at our skins and the more the defects come out will always apply. ? North American P51D “Sherman Was Right” 78th Fighter Group, 8AF USAAF P-51 Mustang WZ-S, (serial number 44-63209), named “Sherman Was Right”. The phrase derives from a speech in which General William T. Sherman (commander of a Union Army in the American Civil War) said: “There is many a boy here who looks on war as all glory but, boys, war is all hell.” First Lieutenant Frank E. Oiler, pilot of the aircraft is stood alongside it. Flew 68 combat missions--300 hours, claimed 1 ME 262 on 4/19/45 on 67th mission. Encounter took place in vicinity of Prague. He graduated from high school in 1941, not having excelled to any degree academically. He did not feel destined to be a farmer, so he soon moved to Chicago to find work. Jobs were scarce, but a friend got him a position at Montgomery Ward and took him in as a boarder. At Christmas, although he was not previously interested in flying, he took his first airplane ride. With the advent of the Pearl Harbor attack he felt that he or his brother would be drafted. Donald, not interested in running the farm, decided to enlist so his older brother would be deferred to attend that duty. He chose the Army and was sworn in during July 1942. He was assigned to the Air Corps and shipped to Lowery Field, Colorado, to become an armourer. Although his academic background was weak, he applied for, and was accepted as an Aviation Cadet. In October 1942 he was sent to Nashville, Tennessee, for Primary Training, graduating as a Second Lieutenant on 1 October 1943. After further training in fighters in Florida he headed to New York, to embark on the 'Isle de France' bound for England. There he became attached to the 4th Fighter Group. He flew Mustangs and his embellished with a fighting-mad "Donald Duck" image. Donald was big-hearted and wore a perpetual smile. He was soon endeared by his comrades as a friend and a leader. During 89 combat missions escorting bombers, strafing, etc., he destroyed seven enemy aircraft and wrought destruction on many trains, trucks, and other surface targets, becoming an "Ace" and a Captain in the Russian Shuttle mission. When his first tour ended he volunteered for a second. On 24 December 1944 the group flew an uneventful escort mission to Giessen. Upon returning to England they discovered Debden was closed for operations due to thick fog, so the group landed at Raydon. The pilots were extremely disappointed at not being able to return to their base for the annual Christmas celebration, where 250 British Blitz orphans were treated to a grand party. Debden base rallied to the occasion and sent a truck loaded with turkeys, cigarettes, whiskey, money, and blankets to the pilots at Raydon to help restore their Christmas spirit. Unfortunately, the business the following day called for an escort mission, this one to the Bonn/Trier area. Thirty-plus Me-109s and Fw-190s tried to attack the bombers out of the sun but immediately engaged by the 4th group escort. Twelve enemy aircraft were destroyed, but one of the Group's pilots joined the ranks of the 'Missing In Action' list. Donald became detached from the group and was seen to engage six Me-109s single-handed, downing two of them; and then, out of ammunition, he headed for home on the deck. He failed to return to base and was later found dead in the wreckage of his plane in Belgium, the victim of ground fire. He was buried in his flying clothes the following day at the age of 21. SARFlytitus Posted March 31, 2020 Author Posted March 31, 2020 @III/JG52_Lothar29 Hola mate, Yes, I was well aware of your beautiful work, in fact I had appreciated it in its time by downloading it immediately. The skin I performed is certainly not intended as a competition but only as my very personal attempt to try my hand on a subject very dear to me. Some time ago I also made the Feeble Eagle of Eagleston only to find out shortly after that it had already been made by a skinner that I consider among the best since the (glorious) times of the old Il2. I hope this hasn't caused any displeasure. I've always wanted to make a skin of one of the Blue nose bastards of Bodney, the fact that other infinitely better skinners than myself have already done almost all of them will not prevent me from trying to interpret it in my own way. I certainly do not aspire to reach talented skinners like Szelljr, Pat Cartier, Raptorattacker, Bo_Nidle and many others that I admire for the historical rigor and the technical and artistic precision of their creations. I'm just an enthusiast who only recently started playing a bit clumsily with Photoshop. Sharing our work with the community in my humble opinion is just another beautiful aspect related to our common passion. the more choices we have the better, don't you think? ? 4
SARFlytitus Posted April 2, 2020 Author Posted April 2, 2020 (edited) North American P51D 336 FSq, 4FG, 8AF USAAF One-time personal aircraft of Major Frederick W Glover, Commanding Officer of the 336th Fighter Squadron Fred Glover from Asheville, North Carolina was assigned to England to ferry planes, not to combat. He was totally dissatisfied with this; he wanted to be a fighter pilot. When they ignored his request Fred took an Oxford transport up and power-dived it. It was not exactly what this type of aircraft was designed to do, and the damage to the plane and the arrogance of the pilot did not sit well with the authorities; so, on 20 February 1944 he was sent to the 4th fighter Group to fly combat. On 30 April, while strafing Lyon/Bron Aerodrome, Glover's plane was hit by flak, causing him to lose his glycol coolant. He had to bale out, but he evaded capture and finally returned to England on 28 May.In August 1944 he became CO of the 336th Fighter Squadron. Glover never gave up! he was a great pilot and intensely aggressive, which was much admired by his squadron pilots and kept their morale at a constant high.In June 1945 he was transferred to 8th Air Force Headquarters, ending his combat. He had 22.8 enemy aircraft destroyed to his credit and had earned the Sliver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross with Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was killed in a flying accident in July 1956 in Hazlehurst, Georgia.
