J2_Oelmann Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Is there any chance we will get an updated Arras map? As nice as it looks, the actual front and no-mans-land is awefully generic. It is 1918. Frontline in that area changed back and fourth at that time. The same goes for the trenches. They just look too generic. Which is a shame If you consider that most britisch maps of that area are available for free. Bapaume for example sits in a perfectly intact landscape even of it the front rolled over it a few times. No.23_Gaylion Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Short answer: No. Long answer: Nope. My opinion: I think it looks cool and markedly better than its predecessor. Edited January 25, 2020 by US213_Talbot 1 1
JG1_Butzzell Posted January 25, 2020 Posted January 25, 2020 S! The landscape is done with tiles. No matter what you do it will eventually look familiar. While the craters and trenches may not be 3D the additions of the ground explosions, barbed wire and MG positions is very nice. A different position of NML would require a new map. Personally I would rather see a new high resolution map of Reims or Verdun. This would be great for "FC vol.2 The Battle of Verdun". Planes could be RE8, N17, N11, DH2, Pup, Tripe and DFW, Alb D2, Alb D3 and Fok E3. Collector planes could be N-24 (not bis) and Rolland D.II 1
BMA_Hellbender Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Take a look at what some of the mission builders have done to make the destruction more apparent. @J99_Sizzlorr's Bapaume (and surrounding village area) on the Flugpark has big plumes of smoke coming out of it, which also acts as a navigational beacon. The main issue is that building destruction can't apparently be "painted" on like it could in the old IL-2, so the best that can be done is to destroy buildings individually, which requires work and resources. So for single player: sure, any amount of work and resource use could be justified, but for multiplayer what we have looks great already.

No.23_Triggers Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 I don't mind the new NmL, personally...it serves its function and looks rather pretty with all the extra barbed wire and whatnot. I think it's always going to be hard for devs to create an 'authentic' no mans land in flight sims. Wings over Flanders Fields has come closest from what I've seen - that front really feels alive - but to create a really convincing feel, with waterlogged craters, burnt out tanks, infantry, properly 3D modelled trenches, etc, would take an immense amount of processing power from a PC..or, at least, that's my guess... Either way, I still got chills when I had my first dogfight in FC over the mud... 1
J2_Oelmann Posted January 26, 2020 Author Posted January 26, 2020 It would be fine If the Brown mudd Texture would applied to a bigger area. Maybe a second type of texture to destinguish the older battlegrounds from the new ones. The trenches could stay 2d, but it could be applied more refined. You would enhance the map alot without adding more 3d Models.
Feathered_IV Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 Most of the effort went into making the large towns. Which is kind of wasted on me, as they are things which I fly between and at some distance, and never have any cause to inspect up close. No-man's land by comparison is something I am constantly engaged with and need to look at closely with every mission I fly. Having just 16 Carpet_.dds textures @ 512x512 pixels each for the entirety of the frontline doesn't allow for any great variation to the most important part of the map. 1
