I'd watch golf if it was a bit more like Rollerball...

? You're on to something there.

First guys T-off, then have to defend the hole against the second guy/s trying to play through. Whoever wins the fight get's to play the next hole.

Each pair of guys get's one dirtbike.

See...it actually has potential to be a sport.

is this illness long term diagnose ?

Unfortunately there will be no long term, at least not looking like it at this point.

Someday probably in the not too distant future, you will no longer see me on the forums. I can try to show my wife how to make a post but I would not count on it. If you see me disappear from posting at some point for days, then feel free to drink a toast to me.

You will be missed.  When that time comes, we will definitely raise a glass.

Ok guys here is the deal I have Stage 3 Lung Cancer. I was diagnosed in Nov. 2022. I started treatments early December and have been undergoing them ever since. First was chemo and radiation, several weeks. Then followed by Immunotherapy, which I am still undergoing now. It is scheduled for 6 more months. However I am progressively getting worse it seems, scheduled for another CT scan in early Nov, will see what it shows. I am inclined to stop treatment if no better or worse. Last scan showed the tumor was not shrinking at all, but was not growing much. With the way I am feeling now and in more pain, I suspect it may be growing. Not only is it a tumor on upper left of lung, but also have lymph nodes on lower left lung that are infected - 5 of them. That is the bad part. Typically eventually cells break off and make their way to other parts of the body. App 40% of patients it goes to the brain. Also lower parts of the abdomen.

So now I feel I may be getting close. Most patients with my cancer only last app 12-17 months after diagnosis. And also I have many health issues already, from large stroke back in 2014 that took half my eyesight, to heart with open heart surgery back in 2009, and almost dying from gall bladder gone bad. And there is more, those are the big ones. This goes against me as well.

Btw, - this - is a result of almost 50 years of smoking. I enjoyed it very much, however it has claimed me it seems now. I knew that was always a possiblity.

Now you know, that is my story and I am sticking with it!

;)

Sorry to hear Don, It seems I have always been following your advice on hardware and most of the time has been good advice, I think we have pretty close to identical systems and same VR, will miss you for sure, and thanks for being open and let us know of your situation.

Thank you!!

I had been planning a while for a new PC build in early 2024. Now I am unsure if I should sink the money into it.

I get good performance with my Aero and my 4090 GPU so I am not hurting there really.

This is sad news indeed dburne.

I always felt that whenever you posted something, about your hardware experiences or Hornet or something else, it has always brought good vibes, too. Something that brings the flight sim community closer and creates the good atmosphere to hang around. Sorry to hear about your health situation.

Yeahhh that is probably never going to happen. I am still in the middle ( laid it aside for a while) of learning the Apache. I really like the Apache. Namely those hell-fires. I love blowing up big tanks! I hope to be able to finish my Apache learning.

Though we've never actually met, (and likely only directly interacted a handful of times on the various sims' forums), I have to admit that I see your presence on forums on which I lurk as an intrinsic part of their very makeup. Like Fortunate Son in a Vietnam War montage, or sport peppers on a Chicago hot dog (the only legitimate form of hot dog and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise).

I just thought that I'd let that you know that, due to your passion for your hobby and your commentary on software and hardware, you've made an impact on more people than you probably realize. I hope that, whichever path you take or whatever is in store for your future, your days will be pleasant and pain free. I am very sorry to read about your diagnosis.

Happy flying, @dburne.

Ahh that was so nice of you and very touching. Thank you very much! I will continue to do what I do at least as long as I can. I can barely even walk at this time, but I can easily still sit in my office chair and keep up with participating on my favorite forums.

You guys are awesome and I am so blessed to have had a virtual acquaintance with you. Do not feel to sorry for me, I am very blessed and my eternal home and family that preceded me are there just waiting for me. God is in control of my situation now and is seeing me through to the eventual finish line. I am quite ok.

I am hoping here before too long I have a pick up of how I feel and can walk better and do some more things for the time I have. Keeping fingers crossed!

I've actually thought the Mi-24 is a cool helo...what it did to the kids in Red Dawn wasn't nice...but cool chopper.

I'd be into it with the Afghanistan map maybe.

I've though off and on about getting back into archery. A recurve this time instead of a compound, losing the pin sites and going pure instinctive....been thinking that for years now and haven't done it.

I see what you’re saying, but when I was a kid I not only wanted an X-wing for Christmas, but I also wanted a Tie fighter too.  I suppose, as a result of the pop culture depictions, I felt the same way about the Mi-24;  It was like a menacing commie badguy helicopter.  Too bad the Baroness from the G.I. Joe cartoons didn’t fly it.

In DCS I can operate both the Black Shark and the Mi-8, so for me, the Mi-24 learning curve is not particularly steep as in some aircraft.  The systems are much like the Mi-8, but it flies more like the BS in regards to its stability system.  Others may have a different learning curve.  It’s a switch-based helicopter, not an MFD one, and I think that makes it a lot easier.

To me Huey was all about Vietnam. I am very fascinated about that conflict.
I do not know why MI 8 and Hind interest me so much. They just do what I like. But my memories about them is not nice. They attacked civilians indiscriminately in Afghanistan.
KA 50 I learned years ago because everybody said it was soo complex.
Learning the systems in Apache chopper was far less intuitive. I simply struggle understanding the weapon system. Anyway KA 50 is easy once you understand the logic. And it’s easy and effective weapons are pretty amazing for a one man operated chopper. AH 64 is now to me ok once you let your friend in front do the weapons and only deal with the gun and unguided missiles.
I can start accepting it now. But I do not understand what I am supposed to do in first mission in mad campaign. I feel as stupid as I might possible be.

I have taken a few months break from my Apache training - but I fired some rockets and hellfires and I do not remember them as being that complex. Course there may have been some changes to the operation in last few months.

It’s DCS.  You will have to get into it on an Iceland map.

You’re not being fair.  When you’re flying something, and putting a pipper on the target,  does it really matter if the terrain happens to be some place versus another?  I mean, how many barren desert maps do you need to simulate a desert?

In DCS it doesn’t even matter if you’re putting the pipper on an appropriate target.

Dude, they released a UH-1 without a Vietnam map.  That’s just silly.

It’s a “study sim”.  People get to spend hundreds of hours learning a plane, just like some high-end plane MSFS.  And then, if they get really good at their stuff, they maybe can even fly a campaign, or maybe even online. But you’re like, “Screw the UH-1 if I can’t fly it in Vietnam!”

Edited by SeaSerpent
Me personally, I put on Ride of the Valkyries and fly it over the jungles of Guam, myself.
