Guest deleted@83466 Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) To me it’s different than a tight-knit wingman in another plane who can manage their own plane as they see fit. The F-14 guys need to play manscaped volleyball with each other because they have to be Bros in order to operate effectively with each other. That’s kind of like the entire plot of Top Gun.? Yeah I know thanks much! Just waiting for the next update to drop for DCS to be able to get and start the Inherent Resolve Campaign, going to be fighting Isis in Syria. In the meantime I really need to do some Hornet flying to get memory refreshed on all of it. Been having too much fun campaign flying in the Spit now. Edited March 9, 2023 by dburne

It should really be an interesting plane. Falcon 4 in its hey days scared the crap out of me in its complexity, it still keep me away from the Viper even tho I bought it. I guess this still keep me away from the F 15

I recently purchased their newer CM3 Stick along with the Alpha Prime metal grip. Still early but so far I am liking it.

Razbam can piss off for that one, since that's what they basically told the entire Steam customer base to do. That said, I'm still getting it and everything else is going into the hangars. I'm definitely going to get some good A2G MFD action going.
Robli Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 The Jester part is interesting also, when thinking about F4 Phantom. I thought that maybe I should get the Mirage F1 now and then the navy version of F4, when it comes out after many many years, but the Jester discussion makes me wonder, if the Air Force version of F4 would be a better fit. I understand that in the navy version the pilot and RIO have clear and very different roles, while the Air Force version enables both crew members to do most of the tasks? Would that mean that most of the relevant and interesting tasks, related to actually flying the plane and delivering weapons, could be done from the pilot seat and it would not matter that much, even if Jester was a rather annoying dude?
Guest deleted@83466 Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 I think the only big dif is that the Air Force versions have flight controls in the back seat. I think the Air Force RIO was a pilot in those days, not a specialist, if I’m not mistaken. Meanwhile, in the Navy, they did this Topgun thing, and changed the role of the back seat to be a more active one. I read a story in some book where Robin Olds flew with the Navy as a guest in the early 70’s, and really did not like the guy in the back seat taking such an active role in the operation of the airplane, telling him what to do and such. I’ll look for the reference.
MiGCap Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Dan Pedersen's "Top Gun" perhaps? Very nice reading, but a little biased when he starts drawing conclusions for today IMO.

Very nice reading, but a little biased when he starts drawing conclusions for today IMO. I looked the reference up, and it’s actually “Scream of Eagles” by Robert Wilcox. “Smith recalls, “We went up there and I started screaming and hollering at him…. But he’s not listening. Finally, he told me to shut up. So I said, ‘Go ahead. Get your ass waxed.’” “Olds was a very aggressive pilot,” Mel Holmes remembered. “He had not been in a Phantom for nearly a year. I was surprised how quickly he jumped in. The first engagement was two-versus-two…relatively simple. I used him as bait and shot down the bogey. The second fight was completely different. We had two bogeys…. He went back to his own tactics and went off on his own to engage the bogey while I was trying to protect him. [Later, on the ground,] the only reaction I got from him was about J.C. He said, ‘In my airplane, [the backseater] only does what I tell him to do.’ J.C. said, ‘Well, we don’t do that here.’ Robin got very upset.”
Lusekofte Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Old grumpy man. Old school fighter pilot plus. Some got to choose Corsair or phantom. Older pilots in navy normally picked Corsair so they did not have a Rio. I am very much a grumpy old man. But I do like cooperation, what I do not like is the help you are getting from your crew. It is always based on your own experience. You have to specific ask for it. I can live with George in the front seat of the Apache. You point where you like him to search. Same with Petrovich But that Jester guy him I did not like. But it is a long time since I sat in tomcat.
Guest deleted@83466 Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 (edited) You probably mean Crusader, not Corsair. I might be inclined to go Crusader (or Corsair)? I think in the Air Force, some might have chosen F-105 for the same reason. Edited March 9, 2023 by SeaSerpent

Lusekofte Posted March 9, 2023 Posted March 9, 2023 Well I started training on the Hornet. I decided that was the only thing I could do to prevent myself from buying F 15. I mean if I get the Hornet bug. I might as well buy F 15 If I get the hornet

The Hornet to me seems like one of the more worthwhile modules. Lots of content, plus carrier ops, no RIO to interact with.
CanadaOne Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Nice update to the F-104 mod. It's a pretty good looking cockpit. Link to the plane is in the video info. 1

Guest deleted@83466 Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 (edited) Hornet is simple. You have sensor control switch to designate what display you would like to slew things around with (right thumb, Warthog joystick), using your target designator control (left middle finger on warthog throttle). Up for Hud, left for left mfd, right for right mfd, down for lower mfd. and then you slew the death dot around on that targeting pod with the tdc, designate it, click back over to the place where you have the weapon page up, and like magic, coordinates get transferred, Mavericks get slewed, etc..maybe have to hit uncage with your pinky…That’s it, that’s Sea Serpent’s Hornet Air to Ground tutorial in less than 10 sentences. Guest deleted@83466 Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 On the Hornet, I recently did something sort of retro. I designate a ccrp target, and put autopilot into altitude hold and CPL. It’s coupled to the ccrp bombline now, and I can move the target around on the pod, perhaps to to the next building over, and the airplane will follow, essentially steering the aircraft with the pod, as if it were a Norden bombsight. Just a thought, for malcontent flight simmers like Lusekofte.?

One fun thing I did was set up Voice Attack to run through multiple markpoint GBU bomb pickles. I designate four targets in close proximity with the pod, then when I'm in range I say the keyword and the markpoints shift and the four bombs drop automatically in about one second. If I markpoint up eight targets, I just use the keyword, and then repeat it about a second later. Eight near simultaneous hits. Good fun.
Guest deleted@83466 Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 (edited) I like the Hornet because really I can only be current on one, or at max, two DCS planes at one time. But I don’t need to miss out on mission types because I don’t know 5 different planes all at the tip of my fingers. The Hornet can do everything. Imagine, for a moment that the Chrysler Cordoba is really a Hornet, and you will see how it suits my needs… Edited March 10, 2023 by SeaSerpent What is this Hooarnet, you speak of, Kheeark?…
Gambit21 Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Well I just finished mapping all of the Hornet stuff...so if you guys continue to have a bad influence over me I can watch some tuts and get all 'slewey and designatey'. 1

That ones easy: switch A-G mode to 'SEA', put the thing on the blob, and shoot. Just make sure that said blob isn't your own carrier, if you don't want to be confronted by an angry man in a fancy hat when you get back. ☹️
Lusekofte Posted March 10, 2023 Posted March 10, 2023 Well after passing the threshold being a computer attendant in the Apache. I do not feel the same desperate need to shoot myself inside the Hornets pit. I did a couple of cold starts yesterday. To me it is important to learn that just so I know what the switches are for. I spend a lot of time getting familiar with all the systems. I feel however not yet convinced this gonna be a favorite of mine, but who knows
