Try 03_Heavy_01 or 03_Heavy_08. You can test out various cloud settings in the editor and view them using the 3-D view.

See the following in the editor manual (written before multi-layer clouds implemented):

  • Mission Atmosphere Options Dialog (pg. 205)
  • Toggle Between the 2-D (Ortho) View and the 3-D View (pg. 13)
  • Move Up/Down in the 3-D View (pg. 13)
  • Look in Any Direction in the 3-D View (pg. 13)

I like layered clouds; far as I know that's not possible with default clouds, at least that I know of.

I use the "More Realistic Clouds" version 8 MOD. Simple, just drop the "Sky" folder in the graphics folder, then when you want to use the clouds check the MOD box.

NOTE: if you have the "Sky" folder in the graphics folder you will see the "More Realistic Clouds" when view in the Mission Editor 3-d view as describe above. You would need to rename that folder to something like "Sky-disables" or anything so you see the default clouds in ME.

Hope that helps.

With default clouds two layers is possible. If you want three four or more then no it is not possible. You can play with the cloud thickness or height up to a point, and so play with the spacing between the two layers.

What is typically not possible is thunderstorm clouds or large cumulonimbus type where the cloud base is very low and it has a vertical development say from 3000 to 30000 feet. To have that kind of cloud would be awesome.

Technically yes, you will get the additional thin layer above the thick clouds sometimes when you adjust the cloud base level and height, depending on which clouds you pick from the drop-down settings. With the plugin you will see the thinker clouds in layers in addition to the thin cloud layer above, depending on settings.

I kept seeing screen shots or videos with these thinker double layers of clouds seen in the MODS...

Default Clouds: How do play with the spacing between the 2 layers?

Far as I know you pick a cloud set, light, heavy, etc..

Level is for the base height of the clouds from the ground

Height is the thickness from base to above...

Example:

Level 1200 klm - cloud base

Height 1800 klm - means the cloud thickness is from 1200 klm base to 3000 klm, making it 1800 km thick...

If I make the height max, 10,000 and depending on cloud type it adds/changes thin clouds above.

When it comes to the clouds in IL-2, the default settings available through the mission editor really don't showcase all the game engine is capable of, as whilst offering many cloud options they all look pretty similar making one choice difficult to distinguish from the next during normal game-play. Plus there are restrictions built in to limit how much each can be changed to differentiate it using the variable parameters in the mission editor.

Generally speaking almost everything people say the game can't do can be made possible by extensive modding , where many may be aware of my slow-burn on-going work to completely overhaul the look of the natural world in IL-2.

This is nudging closer towards the finishing line but I've still a fair amount of work to complete.

The image below was one I first posted about a year ago when getting started on this work, where it would be fair to say I've progressed a lot since then and hope folk will be pleasantly surprised once I am able to reveal all I've been working on.

There are many cloud presets that have two layers. However the two distinct layers of clouds is caused by the height settings for the cloud maps. Only two of the presets give a decent amount of distance between them - heavy_01 and heavy_08. You also have to set the cloud height setting fairly high to get that separation between them.

Even then the separation isn't that great, and it isn't realistic either. Both cloud layers will end up being the same "type" which almost never happens in the real world.

That is possible, just none of the stock cloud maps are suitable for it.

In terms of possible/not possible I was meaning with the stock atmosphere choices and parameters that we have in the ME.

You did pretty awesome mods LizLemon, so for sure you know much better than me if the whole atmospheric system could be modded to do thunderstorm clouds. This is completely outside my capabilities.
