ST_Catchov Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 Any Aussie servers devoted to FC? If so, what days/times? Although my connection is pretty deplorable thus excluding Euro/North American MP (not to mention the time differences), I really should try closer to home at least to see how it goes. Looks like a whole lotta fun from what I've read here. Is teamspeak required and/or anything else? Cheers. 1
Cynic_Al Posted December 28, 2019 Posted December 28, 2019 I'm not certain, but I seem to recall The Unproffesionals at one point were running a FC server in parallel with their WW2 offering. If that's correct perhaps you could ask them its status. Alternatively you could always start one...
ST_Catchov Posted December 31, 2019 Author Posted December 31, 2019 Thanks Al. I'll contact deadmeat in the new year sometime although it looks like he no longer runs a FC server from what I can see. Little interest perhaps. It'd be nice if the in-game server stats page indicated which country each server was in. As for starting one …. I'd be wasting everyone's time including moi.

J5 Flugpark is in Seattle, then you might have a pretty reasonable ping if you are gaming through a cable. I read a while back that they laid an optical fiber cable linking the US and NZ, AUS. The ping must be pretty decent to the west coast of the US. Unless you are in the countryside accessing through WiFi.

I now live in rural southern NSW having got out of the rat-race of Sydney. Satellite connection with wireless router was the best bang for buck I could get out here. No cable. No line of sight mobile (cellphone?) towers. Guess I'm screwed.

With a practical minimum ping of about 500ms, you couldn't play on a server being operated by a neighbour. Looks like you'll have to wait until StarLink becomes available.
ST_Catchov Posted January 1, 2020 Author Posted January 1, 2020 Lol I have a ping of about 630! Say, why am I laughing!? Slap me, somebody.
US103_Baer Posted January 1, 2020 Posted January 1, 2020 @catchov Shooting Stars runs 2 dedicated FC servers out of Japan. They're generally faster for most of Asia-Pac. You might have to seed it, but there are AI and people will join if you're there already.

SeaW0lf Posted January 1, 2020 Posted January 1, 2020 Wait for Starlink then. Might take a year or two, but they are promising a ping of 20ms in any part of the world. The second phase would bring it down to 10ms. Even if they bring the whole world to 40ms, it would revolutionize multiplayer gaming. I just hope they fix the glaring effect on the night sky.

What do you mean by "seed it"? 16 hours ago, flacid_weapon said: Same here I WA the NBN is slower than the broadband that it replaced and costs more. figure that one out It was a great idea to bring ALL Australians into the 21st century but for one fatal flaw. Politicians were involved. 9 hours ago, SeaW0lf said: Wait for Starlink then. Yep seems so. 1
US103_Baer Posted January 2, 2020 Posted January 2, 2020 (edited) seeding' means jumping on the server when there's no other human pilots and staying a while. Others perusing the server list will see you there and come join. Though I wonder, if everybody who joined the server flies Central, would that be called 'germanating' the server?
