Plants Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 I am a keen ww2 simmer but have very little knowledge of ww1 aviation. I am hoping to change that! I was kindly gifted a copy of FC and can't wait to get stuck in! What plane do you guys recommend I start with? 1
AndyJWest Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 I'd recommend starting with the Albatros D.Va. Relatively viceless. 1 2

BMA_Hellbender Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Go through all of them and especially take in the Fokker Dr.I. She’s not my favourite, but boy does that plane have personality. 1

No.23_Triggers Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 (edited) Alb D.Va - Great beginner plane, tame on the controls, good general all-rounder, but she's slow for 1918 fighting! Pfalz D.IIIa - like an Alb, but more sluggish. A little more stable as a shooting platform, but harder to see out the front of. Fokker D.VII - Like an alb again, but faster and less stable! Fokker D.VII F - the king of all ww1 planes, as it currently stands. Handles like a D.VII, but has a mega-powerful engine. Fokker Dr.I - HARD to fly at first...the rotary engine needs a lot of rudder input to master! Tightest turner of the German planes by a long shot, rivalled only by the Camel SPAD 13.C1 - fantastic little plane, very fast, easy on the controls....just don't try to turn-fight in her! She's a BnZ aircraft through and through. Visibility is...er...you'll see (or, rather, you won't see!) S.E.5a - another BnZer, and another great plane. Very stable, but has a REALLY nasty spin. Probably best all-round entente visibility. Sopwith Camel - Another powerful rotary, this thing is HARD to fly at first! Sopwith Dolphin - admittedly, I don't know an awful lot about it. She's fast, she turns quite well, but she has a nasty spin. Then there's the Halberstadt and Bristol...both are reasonably manoeuvrable, but they're better suited to recce and bombing, and if you can avoid the scouts, do so! One final word - in the early days on multiplayer, prepare to be shot down....a LOT! The WW1 stuff, like the WW2 stuff I'm sure, takes a while to get the hang of. It won't be long now until you're hooked on the Great War Edited December 20, 2019 by US93_Larner 2

[TWB]80hd Posted December 20, 2019 Posted December 20, 2019 Just bought FC Monday and started flying that night... it's been a mixed bag as far as successes go for me, had a couple of decent runs and had a couple of "maybe let's just forget those happened" runs... Newb to newb secrets/advice: 1. http://stats.jasta5.org:8000/en/pilots/?tour=7 (Bookmark this, or at least the main page) I go here to try to figure out what kind of fuel to take. I find a decent pilot that flies what I am flying and check their sortie logs Because I am horrific, sometimes I come here to determine whether that last plane I collided with was AI or not (hint: The AI likes to hammer its brakes in front of your... hint2: if you, like me, have flown a lot on WoL, when you see a plane that is flying like a WoL player, it's AI. If you ground attack, it's a good way to see exactly what you hit 2. When there are a lot of people on the server and you are wondering where they are, take off from either airspawn (south-central no-man's land) and then climb. I mean climb, by the way. Like, Aim High Air Force Climb. Get up there and then keep going. High like unemployment in Burkina Faso high. That's where they all are. Make sure you climb outside of the fight, not directly INto the fight... that's my secret-move, don't steal it (spoiler: You'll just get shot in the head doing that, which I know is obvious, but...) 3. Don't forget that some guns have to be manually reloaded... in case you haven't dealt with any of those on the WW2 side. 4. VR is (like WW2) harder to identify enemies, but it seems to actually be an advantage for dogfighting in WWI in my opinion... ymmv... but if you're planning on dogfighting I recommend at least knowing the shape of the Fokker D.VII, the Sopwith planes, and the SPAD... that seems to be the majority of what was up in that furball... bouncing ground attackers is easier, the bad guys shoot at you I will say that FC seems to be gaining popularity... been more and more people on the server each night this week, Monday there were like 3 or 4 of us... there were something like 20 last night, and it was a good time! 1

Plants Posted December 21, 2019 Author Posted December 21, 2019 thanks for the replies and offers guys I really appreciate the help. Gonna run a pwcg campaign to get a feel for the planes and identifying the shapes in a dogfight. have to admit I feel really drawn to those German biplanes ? 1

No.23_Gaylion Posted December 21, 2019 Posted December 21, 2019 You really should join up with a squadron, even if it's one that's not all into the "living history" roleplay stuff. You will find a bunch of folks who have been in the WW1 arena for quite some time. Most love to mentor and can help you quickly pass through the crawling phase. Plus, its always fun to fly with other folks. 1

I agree with Talbot, flying with a squad gives you a chance to learn more quickly. Flying both sides gives you a insight to what each craft can do and when you decide to join a squad we shoot the 3rd down together........oops sorry Talbot didn't mean that honest. ? 1

BMA_Hellbender Posted December 22, 2019 Posted December 22, 2019 Aren’t you all ashamed of yourselves? Someone comes here looking for advice and already the sharks are circling the fresh blood. Typical. Anyway, have you considered joining the flying infantry, son? 1 1

I’ll give you that, you have a lot of nerve coming in here and taking on that tone, although the fact that you are “flying in circles” is probably the reason why you think WWI is boring. As for empty servers, I’m visiting relatives at the moment so I can only post the server list: Edited December 22, 2019 by J5_Hellbender-Sch27b

1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted December 23, 2019 Posted December 23, 2019 (edited) Just my premature observation. It looks like FC will be only weekend fun if you are looking for numbers - which is fine with me becouse I don't have time during week anyways . Plus one regular event in wednesday I think . Honestly I would prefer previous Sunday Vintage in ROF because more airplanes variety and content, less bugs etc. Feeling like we are treated as fifth wheel on the wagon do not help (blind eye and forced fixes) . Lets see maybe it will change . I have time and can enjoy company and competition in FC. Looking forward for organised events I'm trying to improve current state of FC despite all of this. Some of these bugs are disheartening, especially the one regarding disappearing planes. This should be fully documented and made easily reproducible, so we can pass it on to the devs. For some of the lesser bugs, I don’t think it’s even worth bothering the developers anymore. Animations for human gunners, for example, which were supposedly corrected in the hotfix, are only fixed in single player (where it’s almost impossible to see them), not in multiplayer (where you can see them all the time). With how human gunners have been implemented and have inherited the same bugs as in RoF, plus a lack of stats, I think it’s better to just forget about them completely and embrace AI gunners, which are great in general. As for numbers, as long as we have stats, enough to do in terms of ground attack and two or three busy nights a week, we will have enough to keep the community going. If a possible Volume 2 ever sees the light of day, there will still be enough of us around who have kept the lights on. I miss the variety and maps, but the Hollywood-style damage models and problems with FFB/TrackIR means I’m finding it harder and harder to go back to RoF. 2

MS FF /Track IT , glad tey make it better in Il2 - beacuse two years ago same problem was even wors than in ROF (own 2 MSFF2 and USB MSFF Pro in great condition). It's very easy to get rid off " Hollywood-style damage model" only If servers would go to mods on mode and choose to use just 3 server side mods - and we have same result as in FC. I don't mind to have mod mode set as default when I lunch the game. Just saying... Edited December 23, 2019 by 1PL-Husar-1Esk

The moreration locked the thread and said that he had brought the issue to the attention of the team. Now the thread is oppen, but no answer from the team since 2015. In another invisible plane bug report (2019), the OP responded: After the update [july 2019] they said us that the bug should be solved. But is not.. At least in FC this bug seems to be frequent. I had two incidents just this month, three weeks apart, and I stopped recording tracks (got tired of reporting bugs), so I'm pretty sure one of the several bounces I suffered this month were due to invisible planes. Combined with all the other accounts, it might happen almost every mission. 2
