Disturbing...but awesome

Just a quick note about how this game can be awesome and scary at the same time.  Flying along in my Spit 9, I got bounced by some 190s.  I take damage and I'm wounded.  Screen turns red...ears ringing...plane out of control.  I try to bail out...nope...spinning too fast.  I then notice that the cockpit is FILLED WITH FLAMES.  Panicking, I keep trying to bail out...to no avail.  BOOM.

All of this was in VR, and I honestly had to step outside for a breather.  I was quite shaken.  I kept muttering "Oh god, no...no, no ,no ,no"...the Wife thought I hurt myself working on a model airplane.

So well done Devs!  I think.

That happened to me, except not in VR. I got bounced by a 109 in my P-47. I was just flying along, there was a loud bang in my headphones ( literally jumped, lifted my stick and throttle into the air and banged the down on the desk), screen went black, ringing in my ears...then the ringing fades, vision starts returning, tinted red, the cockpit is on fire, you can hear the wind roaring in the cockpit through the shattered canopy. The plane was upside down and spirally downward in an inverted spin. I had gotten hit by a burst of 30 mm, took my tail off and flipped the plane so hard my pilot blacked out. The new physiology effects are great for producing amazing/horrifying moments like that.

If that had been in VR I probably would have had a heart attack TBH.

I had a fire start at my feet after being shot, and the flames quickly filled the cockpit, but the gradual spreading of the fire was awesome.  Probably more so for the guy who hit me.

When i saw the fire in the cockpit in VR for the first time i jumped from the seat.

the external fires are by far my favorite visual damage feature of this game. First it starts off as pure vapors that change the refraction of light, slowly getting engulfed in fire without an instantaneous 'poof'... Makes you appreciate the situation a lot more!

Happily have not experienced cockpit fire in VR yet. . . . . . .that is not an invitation

I had cockpit fire in my P 40. It was awesome , so much so that I forgot to bail out. Also in VR

the fire is the best simulated flames I ever seen in any game

Posted

I noticed last night that the crash effect within the cockpit seems much more realistic. Instead of the screen going black immediately and pulling back to an outside view, I saw flames dancing around me for a couple of seconds before it pulled back to show a crater. Impressive.

Oh yes, experiencing IL-2 in VR is just that - a true and amazing experience. With VR you're no longer "playing" a game, you're "piloting"  an airplane.

I experienced this as the attacker!   In a p-51, swooped down on a 109 on the deck, had to roll out and popped a few seconds into his engine till there was black smoke... as I broke off I started to see the smoke thicken, then a small flame at the bottom of his nose... it gradually got bigger and engulfed the entire cockpit..

the whole time I was in awe and kept saying ‘jump....jump you fool!’

cant remember if I saw a chute but it was a sight.

I have been waiting for a post like this. I agree it is an awesome, gruesome feature to have in the sim. Imagine dealing with an in-flight cockpit fire in real life. Scary stuff. Thanks to TC this feature became a reality.

I have. It doesnt alwaysbhappen which is a good thing.

It only seems to happen if the game decides the cockpit has a fire or the engjne fire spreads.

Its very noticeable whem it happens; more e and more flames can be seen licking up.  Your pilot begins taking health damage and indeed you can burn to death or incapacitation very easily.

Hasnt happemed to me in FC but the first thing I thought of when in WW2 was those poor guys in WW1 who had to choose.

Also yea Ive had fires that never entered the cockpit.

Man, I wish I could see a video o f it soon.

Even sitting admiring the scenery, concentrating on navigation when suddenly the metallic thud of taking hits from an unseen enemy has literally made me shit my pants...... that’s realism!

Though I haven't had a fire spread to the cockpit yet I must admit getting bounced while I'm not paying attention has made me nearly jump out of my seat on quite a few occasions. That's probably why that officer told me to keep my head on a swivel back at training...

Not gonna lie, it’s very easy to get distracted when flying cross country during the twilight hours.. especially on the kuban map...so pretty

I was bounced many times in career, but the AI is bad shot and the bullets flying around me saved me everytime?

I wish we have the blood splashing in the cockpit as the next realistic step. The all Gore mod in IL21946.

It can be made optional as in the Total War series.

That would also be pretty disturbing.   Keep it up and we'll have to start the IL-2 PTSD group...  (j/k)

I was quite surprised yesterday in Flying Circus to discover that bullet hits can knock the pilot unconscious. Was doing some QMB large dogfights, and was hit in a pass by a round, and was surprised to get a black screen with no "You've been killed" message, and finally came to after maybe 20 seconds, fortunately still upright. Was chatting with someone in my ArmA unit at the time, who mentioned having a wing he shot off a bomber hit him in the windscreen and knock him out cold.

Mmmh...... time to switch do VR?  I wonder....

I wish I had 10000 bucks to get a decent PC and a VR headset. But I just ordered a cheap IR tracker and gonna test it tomorrow after one year of moving my head with the mouse... At least that's something!

I and many others can't go back after trying VR, it's awesome.

I keep having this problem that I'm in my cockpit and wanting to pull out my phone to take a pic to send to someone because it's so great and immersive, like "Yeah this is what I'm up to at the moment, just off to intercept some bombers in my D9".

It's  good in VR that even with my headset falling apart, I can't go back to a monitor.

Btw, what headset are you using?

Recently upgraded from an Oculus Rift CV1 to a Pimax 5K+ with the Vive DAS mod.

I would blackout before pilot!

Well, Saburo Sakai flew from Guadalcanal back to Rabaul with .... You probably know the story.

My point is. By no mean I am a sadist :gamer: but I believe that in a sim, immersion is the most vital part. It is easy to take risk when you only die virtually. I am aware that reality and "virtuality" can never be matched, but with these little touches we can make that being shot down, forced to bail or, killed, or whatever other mishap hurts your pride a bit. Right now we have some blood and oil splashes in the pilot's goggles. I propose to extend it a bit more to splash the cockpit. Nobody likes losing, so we have to make losing a bit " virtually painful". For example in the TAW, you can make a sortie and shoot down 10 aircraft and become a double ace but if you are killed .... bye, bye. It's much better a sortie less successful and come back alive.

Watching for the X time the Dogfights Series, the difference between Werner Voss and Rickenbacker is that one pushed it too far and the other knew when to step back and fly back home.

Can you imagine yourself, absorbed in a TAW dogfight and making the mistake of pushing too far and then, your cockpit is on fire or your blood splashing in the cockpit .... it would a painful virtual death. :dash:

Am I making my point clear? It is "just" immersion to the max. Am I a freak for it ...? Look who's oinking? :pilot:quoting Homer here

I've let a few of my friends try the sim out in my VR rig, its always met with amazement. My favorite part though, is convincing them to go ahead and stack one in intentionally to see what it feels like to watch the ground rushing towards you - the moment of impact always results in my buddies jumping out of the chair a bit. They remove the goggles and are left with a 1000 yard stare for a few seconds.

Thats one funny thing about VR. You can’t really record it, or describe it. You have to be there, in the cockpit and actually experience it. I really can’t fly on a flat screen any more.
