pjmack11377 Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 I have been contacted by a member to take down a skin that is almost identical to his. I am not sure if this is violating the ethics of skinning in this forum. I did not make it with the knowledge that his existed. Can someone clarify to me the rules, written or unwritten, for this situation? Just trying to be a good neighbor. Patrick

If it was this person's personal skin (not based on an actual skin), he might have an argument. Otherwise, I doubt anyone could claim ownership of a skin regardless of who made it first. 1 1
pjmack11377 Posted November 10, 2019 Author Posted November 10, 2019 Thank you Rjel. He is probably working on skins too hard. I will put this to rest.

NO-ONE owns the right to a skin unless, as @Rjel says, it is a direct copy of a personal skin that they've made themselves and you have obviously ripped it off. Personally I would suggest to this person that they go back to bed and wake up when they've had a good rest (or word to a similar effect!). That generally isn't the way it works in here... 1 1 1

I spoke with him via pm and he said I misunderstood his request. It's all good now. Thank you. 1

Tom_Weiss Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 there is no problem in making a skin that was made by someone else IMO - otherwise we would all be in a race to make this or that skin and all the enjoyment of spending some time in a skin you like would be gone. I want to make a P-51D Glamorous Glen, a skin that came with the Il-2 P-51D when it was released, that does not mean that I like or dislike that one just that I want to make my own. 1
Missionbug Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 The more the merrier I think, each artist will add their own unique style to any work they undertake, no one owns a particular scheme except maybe the pilot of the aircraft depicted and I am quite sure they would appreciate each artists attempt to replicate that aircraft and so honour their contribution to that conflict. Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
JGr2/J5_W0LF- Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 (edited) While I understand that people making skins feel that they wasted their time when another skin of the same paint scheme is completed already, its not always the case. Each artist has his own personal touch from the placement of the art on the plane to the style of lettering that they chose to use. So really no paint scheme is truly identical so skinners have at it, make what you want and I say the more the merrier. It just gives the community more to choose from... It's funny how great minds think alike...lol Edited November 10, 2019 by 361st_Bugsy 1

It is frustrating to see something you took many hours to complete be it skins or 3d reproduced by someone else, however, it does all add to the variety and at the same time you as a artist are continually improving so finish the one you are on then move on to the next, all is good. Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
Art-J Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 (edited) Given the different approaches/styles by different skin authors, especially related to aluminium finish, surface reflectiveness and weathering (not to mention the actual accuracy of markings, insignia etc.) I always prefer to see a few versions of the same scheme being published by various guys, so that I can choose the best one in my view. Trooper117 Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 If skins are duplicated and even several versions are produced, I'll DL them, try them in the skin/aircraft viewer, then check them in game and eventually choose the one I like best! Choices are good, and I applaud all the skin makers for applying their talent for our enjoyment! 1
Raptorattacker Posted November 10, 2019 Posted November 10, 2019 I think the replies from just about everyone on this, skinner or not, pretty much comes out with the same view and that says it all!

Given your Clint Eastwood avatar, all I can say is "Go ahead, make my skin." 2
