Blitzen Posted November 2, 2019 Posted November 2, 2019 (edited) Has any of the numerous VR wonks here done any preliminary research on the now previewing various 8K headsets? I currently use the 5K model and am pretty happy overall ( it has taken a while to properly tweak .) The new 8K’s are pricey & I like others are wondering if they are a big leap forward in clarity & performance? Are they worth considering and saving any pennies towards purchasing one. There are various specials to try to navigate through on the Pimax website that are a bit confusing to say the least....Your views greatly appreciated. HogMenTheHog107 Posted November 2, 2019 Posted November 2, 2019 By the TTL shots on the Pimax forum it looks great. I think it'll be next year sometime by the time people get their hands on one. It could be the best VR headset out there, but like I said without trying one, nothing is certain. Certainly looks awesome from the demos and the specs.
Blitzen Posted November 2, 2019 Author Posted November 2, 2019 I'm hoping one of the "special offers " will apply to 5K owners or there might be a "flash sale " on Amazon. That's how I bought mine back when...
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted November 2, 2019 Posted November 2, 2019 Be careful with third parties right now, there have already been fake shops popping up on AliExpress. They sell Pimaxes, take money, and you'll never receive your goods. This is the only sales platform https://store.pimaxvr.com/shop/category/vr-headset-8 And this is for those who already own a Pimax headset @Blitzen https://store.pimaxvr.com/shop/product/vision-8k-series-upgrade-plan-for-current-owner-375?category=25
Blitzen Posted November 2, 2019 Author Posted November 2, 2019 There are three *K headsets mentioned here, but I have only a little idea of the differences.. The "Vision+" versions are also mentioned at a substantially higher price.I assume these have eye tracking as well? I'm tempted to pre-order one of them but am anxious to know if the SDE has finally been eliminated ,if not I may as well hang on to my 5K a bit longer... ( BTW; The Flash Sale at Amazon was legit- I got my 5K the week it was released & at substantial savings.)
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted November 3, 2019 Posted November 3, 2019 (edited) Nice deal! The 8K+ and 8KX have both eliminated the SDE. The 8KX ( 2*3840*2160) can be fed its resolution natively, which is like a Reverb (2*2160*2160) but with a giant Field of View. The 8K+ upscales from 1440p, so it'll be softer than the 8KX. Vision refers to the new facial cover that they use, it's larger than on contemporary headsets and supposed to be very comfortable. The headsets are large, but very light, around 500g (for comparison Index 800g). The 8KX/8K+ both come with the vision kit by default. They can both be selected with standard sound (off-ear sound) or deluxe sound (HiFi headphone like speakers). Eye tracking can be bought seperately later, it's developed by another company that already helped HTC to theirs, afaik. But remember that the eye tracking is hardly supported right now, and Fixed Foveated Rendering of the Pimaxes don't work in IL-2 for prolonged time (CTD). I ordered an 8KX. I'll report as soon as I have it (around New Year probably). Edited November 3, 2019 by SCG_Fenris_Wolf 2 3
Blitzen Posted November 3, 2019 Author Posted November 3, 2019 I'll look forward to your report & start saving now.In the meantime,I'll probably have to see if there is a market for my slightly used 5K model...?

I found that kickstrater offer, "plan A" and so on, are not so good. Anyway, as I ordered only one base with my Pimax it's still give me a gain of 150$. But I wont order anything before having read independant review and a delivery date (nothing indicated in purchase order form)
Blitzen Posted November 9, 2019 Author Posted November 9, 2019 Somewhere I read something about a credit that would be given to 5K owners who purchased the new 8K. I don’t think there were any details or if a trade in was involved. Was there any other info involved or was I just dreaming?
SCG_Redcloud111 Posted November 9, 2019 Posted November 9, 2019 Yeah, I have the 5k+ and am super happy with it now (re: DAS + Apache head strap + small weight mounted in back, 3d-printed prescription lens adapter and lenses, extra face foam, Vive nose rest, Fenris tweaks + Lefuneste's mod). I will wait for Fenris and others to chime in on the 8KX. If it is a major step up, I will take the next step and buy that outrageously priced 2080ti ... I am sure it will need it.

There were upgrade plans for backers that aren't there anymore, maybe it was time limited for a week. It was like this in the past, early adopters get offers. There is one offer left that is the "current owners" program. You go to pimax.com click on store button, upper right hand side corner, then on the left find the offer. You won't find it if you do not click store first. You also want to be logged in.
Blitzen Posted November 10, 2019 Author Posted November 10, 2019 Sometimes I wish they had a better English translator for their products...some of their sentences describing products & how to purchase them are pretty fracturedand nearly impossible to understand...BTW in your opinion will 8K users need to upgrade their graphics cards to a 2080 unit/ My old 1080 seems to work just fine even if its FPS isn't outrageously high...
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted November 12, 2019 Posted November 12, 2019 8KX - RTX2080ti 8K+ - you may get away with a RTX2080 GTX1080ti won't support eye trackers or fixed/dynamic foveated rendering, by Nvidia's design. Anyway, with a 1080 I'd say that's upgrade time. Hate giving bad news but it's always better to know than not to know imho.
Blitzen Posted November 12, 2019 Author Posted November 12, 2019 Sadly, at least for now ...that's a deal killer. It boosts the total to nearly $2000.00 total.A budget buster around my house.I'll have to wait to see if any of those components come down a bit in the future or keep my fingers crossed that Oculus or one of the other VR makers comes up with an alternative that not only eliminates SDE but has a lower price point.I've got my 5K working just fine & can live with it for a ways longer ,I guess....

SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 As Mister Williams had stated in the past, IL-2's VR is not meant to be run on Ultra Settings in the game. Change settings to High. The engine was not originally designed for this, and it took a lot of tricks and work to get it running for VR. My personal opinion on this is, that High is enough, and that the Devs have put quite a bit of work to port the game to VR in the first place. I'm glad they did, and they are constantly improving upon it. The new clouds are already a great improvement, both performance- and quality-wise. Especially when you look sideways, the clouds don't twirl anymore and look much more realistic. The point is - on High, the i9 9900KS may certainly be enough for most situations. Especially those golden eggs running on 5.2GHz. What proves to be much more effective than upgrading for an additional 100 or 200MHz and spending so many dollars on it however could be a) to wait for the next cpu generation with high single core clocks to push current prices down or go with 7nm. AMD is not an option though afaik. b) use programs like prio_x64_210_4391 to save CPU affinity of programs. Keep core0, 1, and 2 (and thread 4, 5, 6) clean of any background apps and solely for VR. c) get rid of RGB/LED-controlling software, they often give spikes. If you have MSI cards, check LEDKeeper.exe in taskmanager, for example - it's a bad boy. Same with Logitech RGB software.
Rei-sen Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Hmm, I'm using Ultra on my setup. It's running pretty smooth for me in Career on medium density. I'm quite happy with the performance. Before 8KX I didn't see any reason to upgrade since the gains are small. It seems like the 8KX might be a good reason to do so, if the picture is really good and equivalent to a 1440p monitor. I don't want to change headsets or PC components every couple of months, so I guess I'll wait a bit more for the new gen of CPUs to come out so that I can build a solid rig that can handle 8KX at its native resolution and enjoy it for several years.
dburne Posted November 13, 2019 Posted November 13, 2019 Ultra has been very smooth for me as well, although full disclosure have not had a chance since Bodenplatte was released.
