Algy-Lacey Posted May 3, 2020 Posted May 3, 2020 The wierd thing is... I used to have an i5 6400 2.7 GHz and when I used to fly on the Kuban map in VR, I used to get slightly better frame rates and it was smooth, but can't remember what SS settings I had running tbh. Perhaps it's one of the more recent game updates that has slowed things down? I'm gonna try the same kind of dogfight on the Kuban map and see if there's any improvement since my processor upgrade and changing from Steam VR to Open Composite. I bought my CPU for it's overclock-ability, from 2.7 GHz to 3.5 GHz is already quite an improvement but the thing turbo's @ 4 GHz, should be able to overclock to 4 or maybe even 4.5 GHz at a guess... so will source a decent cooler and give it a go at some point. Ahh, the BIOS. Erm, I set a password on my BIOS and I've forgotten it!

I put a HUD (layer) on with the oculus tray tool (version 1.42.0) and at 1 (pixel per display pixel override), 1212 by 1440 were rendered. So I reduced the "pixel per display pixel override" to 0.9 and this gave a resolution of 1080 by 1296. Now I have pretty stable 90 fps in quick missions of 8vs8 with heavy overcast weather, but in multiplayer I'm mostly at 80-85 fps. I have been thinking along the same lines, although I haven't actually used OTT HUD layer to investigate... yet. Back when I had my i5 6400 I used Steam VR and set up the Application Settings specifically for IL-2, in the section Application Resolution Adjustment, I set it to 100%. It defaults to 66% I believe, which means it is actually rendering about 1080 x 1200 per eye, which is the Oculus Rift's native resolution. 100% on the slider gave me 1330 x 1584 rendered. So I'm wondering if Open Composite is currently rendering more than the Rift CV1 native resolution? This might explain the performance decrease? If Open Composite naturally renders eg. 1212 x 1440 then setting SS of 1.2 in OTT would actually give 1454 x 1728. Or am I talking rubbish? Just a thought!
Algy-Lacey Posted May 4, 2020 Posted May 4, 2020 Hey guys, There is one thing that is bothering me that I can't figure out... Even with using Open Composite, there is an area with a red coloured line around it on 'the floor' in VR. It is the size of the room that I set up when I first used VR. I can't find any settings to change to make it dissapear. I think it might be called 'chaperone area' or some such. When I am flying in VR there is a rectangular red lined box towards the bottom of the cockpit. Please can anyone help?
Eclipse4349 Posted May 5, 2020 Posted May 5, 2020 Has anyone else had issues running through Open Composite with the Steam version of the game? I only installed it less than a month ago, I think. I would select to run IL-2 through SteamVR and it would run via Open Composite without SteamVR, no problem. It worked fine for several weeks or so, then one day the game launched from SteamVR instead. Since then, I can only run via Open Composite if I run the IL-2 exe directly from the Steam directory, but then I don't have access to half of my content because of the way account linking is set up. I can't get it to run through Steam with Open Composite anymore, even though the settings still have it set as the default application to use, and IL-2 specifically is set to use it. Occasionally my controls stop responding until I alt-tab and then go back to the game. It seemed to stop while I was using Open Composite, so I would like to be able to use it again!

If you accidentally (or otherwise) run SteamVR, it will undo the changes that OpenComposite makes to the default runtime. Re-run the OC installer, that should re-register OC as the default runtime and fix the problem.

Unfortunately, the problem remains, even after deleting my OpenComposite folder and then re-extracting the files and running the .exe, and watching it download the dlls. OpenComposite is set as the default, but it still runs through SteamVR. It had to be an update that broke it. It worked great for weeks and then just never worked again. I deleted the files again, and this time extracted the files and ran the .exe as an administrator, and this time it worked! Edited May 8, 2020 by Eclipse4349 fixed 1

Algy-Lacey You are most welcome, always glad to be of assistance. I have been using Open Composite for quite some time, only way to go with the Rift in my opinion. 1
Trask Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 Hi all, just picked up BoX in the sale and tried OpenComposite for the first time. I get an error when I try to start IL-2 (from steam) saying 'failed to initialize libOVR.dll'. Has anyone else experienced this? SteamVR still works fine.

Start il2.exe directly from the BOX directory and link your BOX account to your steam account. After that you can start without steam/steam VR running, hopefully no error message (i think its from steam VR)
