Commanding wingmen? [Solved]

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I´m having trouble keeping my wingmen under control. I did order them to "Rejoin formation" by using the AI command menu,  F5 for "Return to our mission", which makes my guy say "Rejoin formation and follow our mission". Instead of getting in Formation they just flew away, so whats going on? I need help with this.

EDIT: So it turns out you have to tell them to "Do like me (copy my actions)", then your wingmen will follow you nicely!

Interesting.  I've experienced similar issues in some missions I've created with 3 wingman, and reducing that number to 2 without making any other changes yielded immediate significant improvement.  Mostly though, it's just one random wingman flying off into la-la land.  I also noted that when this occurs, the on-screen map updates a bit slowly/jerkily, as it there's just too much going on in the mission for the CPU to handle elegantly.

So it's made me wonder if the AI wingman logic is a lower-priority thread that gets overlooked when CPU utilization is high.  That's my current conspiracy theory and I'm stickin' with it. ?

My guess is, that 'Return to our mission' will make them fly back to the programmed flight path, like they would when an AI would be the leader.

I think the correct command would be 'Do like me', which should make them follow you in the last ordered formation.

Interesting, I´ll try that!

What I like to see is to be able to tell my flight in more detail what kind of target to engage. Suppose you are on a bomber interception mission. I think it would be good if I as the flight leader could assign a part of my flight to engage the escort fighters, while the rest are going after the bombers.

This is an utterly ingenious way to illustrate a problem.  In the same track, what did the wingman do as the mission evolved?  Land or return to earlier flight plan?

@Yogiflight

The "do like me" command does actually make my wingmen join my formation!

They even seem to disengage from combat!

Thank you so much!

I did my best to describe it.

I do think they just went and did the mission without me, escorting IL-2s, but I didn´t stick around for the entire mission, since I got pissed a little

As previously noted, "Return to our Mission" makes the flight continue with the mission, as though the next AI in the flight was flight leader, starting with the next waypoint or action point that you have not yet triggered.

If you are not feeling like being leader, or just get lost, you can use this to hand command to the AI, then just fly along as with them as a wingman.

Using TacView, which is free, is a brilliant idea for showing a problem.  Makes it really clear.

True “do like me “ works but they’re  YOUR flight so why do they wander off at all!!! Regardless of starting on ground or in the air they should fly with you until directed otherwise or if you get bounced. You would think that the developers who are so serious about immersion would fix that.

Sometimes AI will get excited when enemies are around and loose focus on the mission at hand.  Enemy AI can be within 5km of your flight but if you don't pose a threat to them (especially if they are escorting), then you will most likely be left alone.

With excited AI, pull them back into line with either the "Do like me" command and or "Return to Mission" command.  Nice to know the later will also enable a lost you to follow the AI back to the mission flight plan.?

Is this the “Follow me “ I can assign in key stroke menu?
