Go to main directory if you don't already have desktop shortcut, something like:

"C:\Games\IL-2 Sturmovik Battle of Moscow"

Open folder, delete contents of updates folder ***backup files just in case.

That didn't work for me with either the public or beta builds. (scratching my cranium at the moment)

Not sure - worked for me after I cleared update folder - then restarted the game

I can launch the public version with the .exe, but it's something server side.

As you said the beta will not launch either (and no .exe in the beta)

Earlier in the evening (EDT), I backed up and deleted the updates folder and still got the "Failed to update" message. However, later in the evening (9:00 EDT ???) I started the launcher and it indicated "Analyzing Files" with a progress bar for awhile before starting and completing a small update. The version still indicates 3.201c in the main screen though. Hmmm.

I had this problem earlier, tried deleting the files as before, no joy.  I tried rebooting and tried several times over the evening and was about to give up. It then just worked once after trying to start it from the launcher and has been fine since.  No changes on my part.  My server in the basement worked fine.  Incidentally I did install the updated NVidia Driver before I started BoX, hnot sure if that is related.

Earlier I had a couple failed to updates, then flew online for 2 hours with a bunch of guys. 1 hour later tried to fly and receive "failed to update" over and over, then I tried 10 min later, I can play. I assume server issues.

I just had the same trouble... the game should start even without internet connection ... The DEV's are launching any update?

I'm getting the same issue. Even after deleting the updates folder. This is the first time I've had an issue with IL-2. Surprised not to see some official announcement about it. I've got the day off work and want to fly damn it!

Have you tried to start the sim using the App (.exe) rather than the Launcher? That works for me. I have not tried using the Launcher today.

It's sorted now. Just started working again after several reboots. But what ever that update was it has over written all my files and I've lost my custom photos. I've not seen any announcement.

I too have the "failed to update" message when I replace some "custom_image.dds" files via JSGME. The game exe works fine, but the launcher gives this error message. The files are of the same size as the originals, only the timestamp is different. Deleting the update folder didn't help. Others like @SAS_Storebrordon't have this issue. Over at SAS we concluded that my install might get screwed at an earlier point. I haven't done a complete reinstall yet, as the game runs fine otherwise.
