Developer Diary, Part X

Well ... forward air observers (somewhat misleadingly called Fliegerverbindungsoffizier or shot FliVO, officially a FliVO was a staff officer assigned to a headquarters unit to faciliate cooperation between ground and air forces) had limited means of communication with air forces. There were only two types of dedicated vehicles used - the early SdKfz 253 and the (from 1941 on) more common SdKfz 250/3-I with FuG 7 and FuG 18 - and these were used almost exclusively to direct Stukas and (especially later) ground-attack aircraft to their targets. I have, for example, never heard of FliVOs directing medium bombers or fighters. I hope the historical limitations on radio communications will be observed.

Ground attack, particularly in urban settings is where such communication makes sense. I know a similar system was in use with Hurricane units in the Far East. Having flown my share of mudmoving missions, I really look forward to see how it works!

I'm not sure about the eastern front, but by '43 close air support was quite common (and effective) in the SW Pacific, with front line troop displaying target marker for the attacking pilots. (earlier on there were some issues with air support for AIF troops)

I wonder if there will there be marker objects to help guide the attack pilots onto their targets?

Any idea what they look like, Skoshi_Tiger? If they aren't included in the game, they should probably be simple enough to add as a (legit) mod, I'd think.

First, I suspect that the puddle of oil might be a more grim sign about the condition of the I16 than the little bit of airframe damage visible. I fear a cracked crankcase from the propstrike. I hope I'm wrong, as I imagine those engines are not a dime a dozen!

I love the cat metaphor. I understand it to mean that no matter how much the development team wants to fit inside the box we provide for them, they simply heve real world constraignts to deal with. For the cat there is only physical size. for the dev team there is time, money, computing power, existing hardware limitations, and a host of other things. This is the real world, no one has unlimited time or money.

The lucky part of the story is that M-62 (ASh-62) is quite easy to acquire - it's still in production in Poland (WSK PZL Kalisz). I don't think it's cheap but definitely not unobtainable, like VK-105/109 is for example...

I must have missed this cat thing. Was it in the Rata vid?

The video is at the end of the developer diary. ^_^

Ah hah. All is clear now?!

That is one determined cat though. He certainly likes boxes.. lol.

It's very clear that the cat in that video has never studied quantum mechanics... ;) Never EVER get into a box if you are a cat :)

Depends on the QM interpretation though, doesn't it? ;)

what would happen if instead of taking just a cat we take a zombie cat for the experiment?

Depends on QM interpretation again ;)

This cat is what "simmers" want and the box's what dev's can do. Never fits.)

But the question is if the cat is dead or alive? (the dream of the ultimate sim) :) As it is now it seems like it's both with CloD that was put in the long box six feet below seemingly alive and the new 777 code also going in what seems like a good direction "on the paper". But the box is still closed for us so we don't know which code base will be able to fulfill our dreams... ;) These two alternate universes don't seem to communicate with each other according to the latest update and we cannot say which one will prevail - or both? I'd say we are going into the many-worlds interpretation? :)
