Custom cockpit photo made easy with Paint!

Problem..for some reason the cockpit photo has been removed after I had to reinstall the Battle of Stalingrad. Please would anyone advise me how to restore it. Not even Cockpit Photo Mod helps ???

A lot of people are getting nowhere with this. Maybe someone could host this like they do with skins? I'd like a Lily Litvyak pic to grace the cockpit of my Yak9T.

 After i had to reinstall, i had to turn om the photo function again in the plane setting next to where you choose your skin).

Here's an example from my P-51. It was a little tricky, but I got through it with some trial and error. I used a simple file converter app, not the methods given here so far. Being free (thus mediocre), it had trouble converting JPG and PNG into DDS, but BMP to DDS worked. Then it had trouble resizing the BMP into a 1024x1024 DDS. So I picked only large photos and cropped them down to roughly 1024x1024 before resizing them to precisely 1024x1024 (to make a 1:1 ratio); there was very little distortion as a result. I included a large dead space (of empty background) on the right side to compensate for the portion that would be cut off. All the pre-conversion editing was done with an extremely basic paint app.

 

It sounds more complicated than it actually is. Glad I did it, though; it's a fun way to personalize the cockpit. I have different photos for each nation, and I made them all black and white so they don't stand out too much from a distance.

 

I didn't use 40s actresses, but I did try to keep my broads classy.

Is anyone having the problem that any cockpit photos they try to use come out completely black?

 

I successfully made one a few weeks ago, but every time I've tried recently, it's just come out black, even though it looks correct in the thumbnail inside the folder in Windows.

 

I'm using Paint to resize the canvas, and save as a jpg, then aconvert.com to convert it to a dds.

In the converter are you resizing to 1024 x 1024?

Are you certain you are converting to dds, I had same issue and then found that for some reason the image I was trying to use was jpeg not dds.

Failing that have you changed the  name of the file to   custom_photo

I'm sure all the other things are correct.

Yest, it needs to be sized to 1024x1024 in the converter.

Go to the options or setting of your Browser and check where your downloads go. Like mentioned above, normally your downloads got to the folder called downloads. c:/Users/Your name/Downloads.

It's too bad on the FW190 the picture is tucked away out of sight. That's no way to win a war.

Nope - each aircraft has its own place pre-defined - so no possibility to place the image where you want.

I know this is a relatively old thread lol, but for those who may want it, I have I really method using paint.net! I'll attach my "customphotobase" file below. All you gotta do is resive the image, paste it on the base, and save as dds! (WARNING: Weeb Inbound)

 

First, open the image you want with paint.net and select "image" then "resize" 

  

 

 

 

Be sure "by absolute size" and "Maintain aspect ratio" are checked, and then set the longer side to 1024 pixels, in this case height. Then save the image.

 

 

Open the "customimagebase" image and select "Layers" and "import from file".

 

 

Find your image.

 

 

Click "File" and "Save as" 

 

Save the image as dds, by slecting it or typing "dds" at the end.

 

Boom! You're done. Now just rename it to "custom_photo" and place it in the desired aircraft directories. I usually store up a lot which is why I didn't here XD.

@savagebeest if you are looking at putting specs in the cockpit in place of those gawd-awful sweetheart pics, I highly recommend

Follow the entire thread, pretty sure all of the current aircraft specs are there in cockpit photo form (with the exception of the P51B, but its coming).  ALthough it is listed as a mod, it does not trip the mod button, you can fly unmodified on any server.  PM me if you have any questions

Hi

 

I just recently started actively using IL-2. Have been finding out all kinds of stuff and now got interested in this. My problem is that I don't have that "my plane" in main menu as I've seen in screenshots nor do I have those 3 tabs in quick mission when I go to select weapons/paint schemes. My menus look completely different.

So pardon my stupid question but is this feature still active in 2023 and if it is how do I get those 3 tabs in the quick mission. Mine looks like this (attachment).
