Developer Diary, Part IX

Great update .. Thanks...

Well, the answer to the first questions leaves me a bit speechless to say the least.

Tearing on planes evoking negative emotions in a game that is simulating one of the worst battles in history and where you'll shoot and bomb stuff all day long ? Come on....:wacko:

I completely agree, especially the wear and tear on aircraft. And I suspect that those who usually 'fly' VVS would very much agree that their aircraft look as if they saw a lot of action. I recall that IL-2's [be it later in the war] were patched up with parts from canibalised IL-2's. For me, that acually brings life into the game instead of flying factory-fresh aircraft.

Let the Germans fly their factory-fresh aircraft, wearing the riding breeches and fancy hats :P  while we farmer's sons fly our battered and worn-out planes!

Can't wear and tear be skinned? It seems to me that with all the work that needs to go into this product spending time on skins that wear over time is a waste of time. Immersive? Yeah it could be .. but a show stopper or something to be disappointed about if it is absent? I don't think so .. but that's me.

Obviously the cockpit of today is better than that in the original IL2.

But I still hope that the picture of the pit is WIP and not final. I miss shadows from the buttons and instruments and also reflexions on the instrument glasses. Will we get these? Right now it has good resolution, yes, but looks really flat.

Duhhhh .. Of course it is a WIP .. the whole sim is a WIP .. which is what makes some of these gripes so silly... I'll save my bitc#ing and moaning for the final product if need be.. to complain about some of this stuff.. especially at this stage is a waste of beef ... but hey.. that's me.

Zorin - "You are my sunshine, my only sunshine..." ;)

Still early days, man and its not CloD, it's a different game, done in a different way.

Posted

You apparently have very bad eyesight. It is the same model, yet in direct comparison you can spot several parts that where 3D in the CloD version and now are 2D with faked 3D textures for BoS... Apart from that, the screenshot of the CloD version is oddly distorted hence the over scretched frame and pronounced "edges" on it.

If you look closely, you will see that CLOD's version had buttons under the gunsight, BOS version doesn't  different color/shape of the red pulling handle in CLOD and BOS... No amount of fish-eye distortion can explain away edges like those on CLOD Lagg's frame. BOS frame quite simply has more polygons wich makes it more round.

And, most importantly, Loft has said that this screenshot is equivalent to LOWEST graphics settings that will be in final game. (see my previous post for link to the quote).

It's nice that the developers participate in the discussions and reply to feedback at least on the Russian forum.

Nice looking model and textures there!

Keep the screenshots coming!

Settings don't change 3d detail anymore... We are in the 21st century, you know? And you bet that that is the same model they use, only with alterations, though having an argument with you is obviously pointless...

I've been wondering about this a bit. I'm not blessed with x-ray boosted 3D vision so a single screenshot without lighting and shading makes it very hard for me to say what's 3D and what's a texture. Can you please name the "several" parts that are now 2D? For starters, half a dozen would suffice.

You should have posted this picture instead, would have saved us time. What is most apparent, IMO, it is the same model we saw from the CloD team and you really have to work wonders with the lighting otherwise it really falls short of its potential. Most of the fixtures (switches, handles, knobs, etc.) look really flat on the picture you posted earlier.

Oh, I love the worn look on the cockpit! You other guys can have all the shiny new cockpits to yourself, I like the worn stuff!

The update also indicate we will have a flyable P-2, which is great news!

That looks heaps better than the Clod pit posted in this thread!

Who is responsible for the textures? Buy them a drink, I like their work!

Haha so much for these 'fake' 3d textures Zorin ^^

The model and skinning/texture mapping look first rate (used to have some experience, and I know how difficult it is to do well). There may yet-be postprocessing effects to be applied also, when the model is animated in-engine with lighting/shadowing models. We dont know yet. Either way, this looks accomplished and pleasing to the eye.

That should allay the fears of the doom-and-gloom soothsayers (and those who doubt the dev feedback on this forum).

There may yet be grumbles but this isn't one of them judging by what we've seen so far. Personally I like the thought of a busy animated airfield and ground troops, but if it's not yet feasible, then we wait until it is.

That looks great Loft!!! Thx for coming in here and sharing!! This is absolutely great developer behaviour!!! :) So many other game developers can learn from this behaviour!

Cheers

I dont see much difference of the cockpit in Clod and this one, only texture and minor changes, i need some in game photo to see it

That new screenshot shows indeed a lot more than the other one did, very nice! As for the texture, I like a dull finish. No shiny stuff for me please, unless reference shows up how WW2 fighter cockpits were all bathed in oil prior to take off.

and people wonder why developers don't post more WiP pics of their work....L O L

all you need to know from that render is that the work is for real - it is ongoing - they have talent - and they have done research for correct dimensions and instrument placement...

if you think that panel is in any way finished or going to appear just like it is in that render in the finished simulator then you are not well - go lie down somewhere

Knock it off guys,

Another informative update form Loft. The cockpit look great as will all the cockpits. Much left to do. Clock is ticking.

Of course it looks good, these guys know what they are doing, cheers for the update!

Can't wait to see the c-pit of a 109.  THAT will be very telling.

Posted

Wow, they look surprisingly alike, actually.

I would hope so.

777 didn't make the cockpit model shown in the update.  Maddox Games did.

What I would like to see is a screen shot of a cockpit "start to finish" made by 777.  Comparing ROF cockpits to Clod is not in the same league.  So the screen shot made from a model they didn't create in the 1st place shouldn't really impress anyone I would think.

Yawn....

Thanks for the update and screen shots. Can't wait until we get to see them in an ingame video!

Why the personal attacks? They add nothing to the purpose of the thread and they detract from the atmosphere of the forum.

Skoshi_Tiger, my comment was meant as a joke, clearly.

This thread blows me away. It's a good looking cockpit. Whether it was made by this team or the previous one (and they did merge so presumably many of the old team are still involved) isn't relevant, is it? It'll be used in this game for our benefit.

What incentive is there for the development team to post any wip shots if they are scorned? They are work IN PROGRESS. We all want to see what they're working on as soon as we can, so when they do share an early pic or two with us we shouldn't pan the damned thing.

I think it's very relevant. This dev team is obviously not the old dev team nor even the same company. Of course the cockpits look good. All of the cock pits in Cliffs of Dover look amazing (the same team that made 99% of this one etc.,) Understand now?

How are they scorned? I haven't seen anyone say "that looks like crap". Instead all anyone has done has given constructive criticism about what they do or don't like about them. Is that not the purpose of a forum? But I would much rather see a screen shot made 100% by this new team instead of work made by the old. That should give us all an idea of how future work will look. Using another team's work to showcase your own does not.

This dev team is obviously not the old dev team

Some of it is. And come to that, some of the RoF aircraft were made by the same team that worked on CloD...

Incidentally, how do you know who made what?

Hint taken. But then again it works both ways meaning that it is equally a waste of beef to say how great it is ;)

BTW: They said actually:

We have finished the work with the first cockpit of the LaGG-3

So I felt obliged to assume that they would not spend any more time for the cockpit (they said "finished") which, at the state as it is right now, raised some concerns about how far they will put graphical effort into the cockpit.

I like the smarter use of polys in the canopy frame. Better to spend the polys on parts you're likely to be seeing more often.

The instrument panel textures of BoS and CLOD appear to have the same origin. The scratches in the CLOD one are present in the same spots in BoS and BoS has added a few of it's own for good effect (around instrument knobs for example).

I think most here are very excited about BOS and grateful for the regular and accurate updates from the Dev team.  Thanks again for the Friday updates and the latest images.  They look very promising and please keep them coming.

We live in a very cynical world and many here are coming from a place that set amazingly high expectations, provided years of misinformation and ultimately delivered a failed product   I am hopeful that the more the Dev's share the quicker everyone will forget the past and start thinking about the future...which right now looks pretty bright.
