RedKestrel Posted July 17, 2020 Author Posted July 17, 2020 Thanks to all the advice in this thread, and another regarding 1440p and my GPU, I ordered a new monitor and it arrived today! I got the Acer V277U 27" 1440p monitor. It's an entry-level 1440p monitor but to my eyes it looks great - colors are awesome out of the box, contrast and brightness are good, and the image is pretty sharp. It has freesync which works OK, the freesync range is only from 48-75hz so its not the greatest thing in the world, but you get what you pay for. Playing Il-2, the game looks gorgeous, even with settings turned down from max - the game looks much better on reasonable settings on 1440 than at max on my (admittedly crappy) 1080. My card (1660 super) struggled to hit 60fps in extreme situations on max settings, but outside of that everything is just as smooth as it was before, so I just turned down clouds and draw distance a bit and basked in the high res. Its really almost like a whole new game in terms of looks. Spotting might be slightly harder (there's about 10% more PPI, so pixel sized contacts are slightly smaller) but I am still getting used to the screen space - I find myself scanning only a small part of the screen. ID'ing is much easier, and whereas in the cockpit before I had to zoom in to read some instruments, now I don't. The game is also much less jaggy, I may turn down the AA and see if that helps slightly with distant contacts. Once again, thanks to everyone for the advice! So far I'm really happy with the upgrade.
