Skinning Default Aircaft (IL-2M41) for career

I'm sure this has been brough t up before, but after a few searches I'm still unable to find the answer.

 

Im running a career in BOM as an Il-M41 pilot, and was wanting to change the stock (default) skins to some some custom ones, but can't figure out how to assign them to my Squadron.  I'm sure it's a simple thing, I just haven't figured it out yet.

 

on another note, I'm advancing through the BOM career, as. IL-2 pilot, model 41, but the actual aircraft looks to be a M42.  Is this a glitch?  The cockpit armor is quit a bit different from the M41-M42.  I'd like to be authentic if possible.  For reference, when I do a quick mission with an M41, all is correct.

Thanks!  I'll mess with that tomorrow to see how that works. Now if I can just get the other half of the question sorted out.

 

**edit to say I tried adding and removing the 23mm cannons, and that's what changes the armor in the cockpit!
