Official Scripted Campaign "Achtung Spitfire!"

I am about to start Mission 17, so only 3 Missions left. I really love the Campaign and the night missions are pure fun,

 

Today I had a funny situation.…….while parked at the beginning of a Mission, while starting my engine, I watched a group of P-39´s entering the runway to start a sortie…...1 of those AI P-39´s went off the runway and crashed into a parking Yak, destroyed it completely, that looked funny and ridiculous.

 

Another Mission I started taxi to the runway in a row with my AI Squad mates, the AI Spitfire behind me was taxiing too fast and crashed into my tail, destroyed my Elevator, I had to start the Mission again.

The AI does sometimes real slapstick maneuvers.

Those noobs huh, some times they do things like that (take off accident) but could happen IRL so..

He probably got mad at you for jumping on the line ;). As a rookie with the GIAP you are always last in a row.

This campaign is a real treat. 
only gotten to mission 5 because I do only one a day. So I follow the career time line. 
Expectation for every day. I havent enjoyed a campaign so much since I started one of my first in old IL 2 back in 2002

I have just finished this campaign in VR on full realism. It was so very immersive and enjoyable, challenging and I felt very integrated into the mission role. As already reported there is the mission where a P-39 interferes with the rest of my flight  so I ended up flying the mission by myself. There was a later mission where the flight lead refused to take  off so again I flew the mission solo. Apart from anomolies like this, which I am well used to by now with flight sim AI, the whole experience was very much worth the price of the campaign and I want to congratulate everyone involved in its creation.

 

As the AI behaviour is improved and becomes more cohesive, reactive and subtle then I can look forward to re-flying this campaign for  an even deeper sense of  involvement.

VR has really bought this campaign alive for me.  Controlling the taxi to the runway in 2D is harder & a chore.  Congratulations on delivering such an amazing campaign.

Could you remember which missions it were? I want to take a look since I dont want noone to fly mission solo, they are hard enough with a full wing..

I bought it few days ago during the sale, but still didn't start it. Still learning some cool maneuvers in the 109's and enjoying while learning the Mig... But the next thing in my "to-do list" is this campaign, so sad Im a disaster with spits 😄

It is just great. I wish for a followup. Great atmosphere , realistic compressed timeline. 
I restarted the campaign because in a mission I got greedy and selfish. I left the group and escort mission and followed a couple of “one O’nines. Lost a couple of mates while I was away and just got like” how stupid can one be” mood. I had promised myself I would be the new guy with less experience and follow my leader. And do my job in a team. Swearing at myself , gotten two 109 that in these circumstances did not mean anything. 
I aborted and deleted the campaign in shame. Restarted it fresh and are now away at work just 3 mission in.  And really looking forward to getting home

Know how you feel.  I've been a good mate and follow my leader, in mission 11 and I do have 7 victories.  I agree with the Great atmosphere, and the time compression comments.  Oh yea I tried the "Lone Wolf" and well it did not work for my flight mates nor me.

As long as you have your accounts linked it should not be a problem. All webstore purchases will be ingame when you start it from steam.

I think Achtung Spitfire is a great Sim but I am having problems taking off from runway when I get in position. No matter what I do to take off in a straight line I spin all over the runway! Apply brakes, stick fully pulled back, twisting stick to not spin, no luck! Spin like crazy! I have to be doing something wrong? Need Help? I have over 2116 flight hours in the BOS sim and no other take-off issues of any other plane.

I read the post of ( gabuzomeu ) for controlling the plane spin at take off. I can not find the topic in key settings for ( propeller to fine pitch/ RPM to Max ? Do you mean ( High or Low pitch )? There is no fine pitch? There is Propeller RPM Control ( RSht+Minus/RSht+Equals) is that it ?

Yes, the prop RPM control is what you need. Set it to maximum before takeoff and taxiing, and then slowly throttle up all the way to max throttle, very slowly and smooth, dont just smash throttle to 100%.

Doing that and using rudder pedals to balance the torque should let you take off 😃

Requiem as always has really good information on it, take a look at this video, it will help you a lot, on how to prepare the Spit for takeoff and landing.

Just finished Achtung Spitfire, and thank you for the tremendous work put into this campaign!

 

In the interest of hoping to shape future campaigns, here are a few points of feedback:

 

 

 

// WARNING - Spoilers ahead //

 

 

 

LIKED:

  • The reconnaissance mission along the road at night.  Very exciting the sense of being alone, at high speed, and then breaking away from the run as searchlights begin to come on and stab the sky searching for me.
  • The early "training missions" felt very realistic.  The first ferry flight to the front line, and the practice ground attacks against the trucks.  Really felt like the squadron breaking in a new pilot in a way that added to the immersiveness.  
  • Variation in time of day across missions.
  • The density of ground fire during missions near front-lines or the key bridge. Never seen such dense flak before in BOX, and really created a feeling of danger.  I pulled my canopy closed to offer a little extra protection against shrapnel :).
  • The variety of locations visited in the region, yet staying reasonably close for short flight times.  I have good memories of that one mission doing ground attack along a densely wooded and hilly valley to the far southwest, of flying CAP over the Black Sea coastline near Novorrisk and the flat swamps and lakes of the NW near the Sea of Azov.  Having mission 20 located where it was was a nice change of pace leading to a memorable ending.  
  • A few long missions (down near Black Sea), but most missions being short flights.  
  • The presence of other friendly flights (La-5s, P-39s) shuttling to and from the front.  Helped create the sense of a live dynamic combat zone.
  • Narratively, no sudden heroic rise of our protagonist from new student to flight leader.  We were always "the new guy" flying #4, and that felt right given the compressed timeframe of the story.

SUGGESTIONS

  • The German 109s are met in almost the exact same way every time.  There's never any surprise ambushes far behind friendly lines by roving Frei Jagd hunters.  Almost never (IIRC) do the Spitfires attack a location and no 109s show up.  It made the navigation to and from the "target zone" much less interesting, since there never felt like any threat until we reached the "target area" for the mission.  The journal even comments on this, saying something like "everytime we attack, the Germans are there 1-2 minutes later".  The rhythm just felt very predictable.  As a recommendation for the future, spring some surprises on the player - a lone 109 separated from his comrades lost behind enemy lines, or an overwhelming force of 109s that should force the player to run.  Have a few Ju-88s separated from their escorts, or an Ace 109 and his wingman doing a hunt deep behind Soviet lines to surprise the player.  Just a few such events would have helped add a degree of uncertainty to all every mission (even if nothing happens that mission) and made the combat area feel more dynamic.  
  • Offer a change of airbase for a single mission.  E.g. a Spitfire has to land at an emergency field near the front lines, is repaired there by mechanics, and needs a pilot to return it to home base, or join a mission in progress.  Just a bit of variety in the starting location (while keeping it realistic) can help break up the missions and keep them fresh.
  • Have an emergency change of mission during a mission.  E.g. we start towards the front line with plan A, but then a flight of Il-2s nearby is getting jumped, or a flight of La-5s has been mauled and trying to get back home, and we're vectored by Soviet air controllers to help.  By 1943, the VVS was developing sophisticated ground control for flights, able to redirect in the air to new targets.  Would again break up the predictability of the flow of the missions.

Early impressions on this campaign, that I'm enjoying very much!

 

What I like so far

  • It includes the cold start and taxi (and this implementation of the Spitfire Vb is strangely easy to taxi!).
  • The presentation at the start of the mission, with a story part and even music, is a very nice touch.
  • The zoom-in gives a good sense of the airfield, even if it's a bit slow and repetitive after a few missions.
  • The missions which are varied, and based on historical events... Or are they? It's mentioned in the first post of this thread, but the (quite short) description given in the sim says the opposite (fictional and not based on history) :huh:  To be honest, I haven't looked up the historical facts to check (not sure I have the material for that anyway).
  • It's a Spitfire campaign ;) 

Features I'm not sure about / suggestions

  • If I could only change one thing, it would be this. The "You have landed your airplane" picture scene *has* to be removed! I almost crashed a few times when I was taxiing and this picture completely blocked my view. It doesn't add anything, breaks the immersion, and is just plain dangerous. Please make it an option at least, or keep it for the 1st mission only, and once the airplane is fully stopped and safe :) 
  • The mission briefings could give a little more information, especially the name of the flight so we know which radio messages are relevant (what's the pilot's name anyway?). Maybe the flight altitude and IAS would help.
  • In the 2nd mission, I was expecting to get some guidance by this Peter chap, but he remained silent the whole flight ;) I guessed where the actual targets were, but firing at ground vehicles is a dangerous process, I'm pretty sure a real pilot would be given strict instructions on what to shoot (and probably not so close to a camp with friendlies).

 

Little bugs?

 

1) I noticed that in the first mission, the leader could never land. It's probably more an IL-2 issue than a campaign glitch (I know IL-2 doesn't make scripted missions easy to design and maintain). The runway was empty for a long time, and yet the tower would not give landing clearance. I finally landed anyway, waited for the leader to land a while longer but finally gave up and exited the mission. It's of no real consequence, except for users who expect to wait for everyone to land safely before stopping the mission.

I didn't have this problem in the other missions I flew.

 

2) In the patrol mission, the AI leader does a first pass, then does very tight 360s for a while. That's the same bug as in the career missions, so I suppose it's a problem for 1CGS (I did report it to them but that, along with all other AI bugs, never had a reply). See log in attachment, with the tight 360s at the bottom.

Are you setting full right rudder trim for takeoff? Also a bit of nose down as well.

With that and a brisk application of power, to ensure you have adequate airflow over the rudder for directional control, you should be fine and require minimal rudder input to keep straight.

Also just keep stick central, don't really need back stick as you want the tail to rise sooner rather than later.

Reset trim once airborne.

I forgot to reply to this. I had the same problem in the first 2 missions at Slavyanskaya. There could have been 2 potential mistakes, but I'm not sure which was responsible or if that was a glitch:

  • I was almost centred behind the leader and not on the right or left, but normally the downwash shouldn't have been so much of a problem for the direction, especially at low speed
  • I was braking at the beginning to get enough RPM before rolling, and I was applying the throttle gently to avoid any couple effect (and trying to correct the spin with some braking when it started rolling, which perhaps only made it worse?)

There's a bit of crosswind too, but if I remember correctly the spin was not rotating the plane into the wind so it's not that.

The problem vanished on the next missions, and I just tried again the 2nd one - shooting range, without any problem.

 

Actually, the AI does frequently spin on landing (it's very erratic in the patrol missions, changing speed all the time, and so on) 😄

 

Could you sort it out?

Check the few posts above, it's been discussed not long ago and there were some tips. It seems to happen a lot :)

 

Now I'm only spinning when this silly screen blocks my view telling me I've landed, I really hate this.

Trial-and-error taught me the following tips with the Spitfire VB in Il-2:

 

  • Brakes are only good for stopping you in straight ahead motion.  They are almost ineffective at getting the plane to swing left/right.  
  • The best way to swing the nose is to goose the engine and use rudder.  A quick burst of power and rudder deflection is very effective to point in the direction you want to go.
  • Always slow to a near stop (or complete stop) before trying to turn.  Any turns while rolling will lead to dipping a wing.
  • When braking on landing, there's a phase where the Spitfire wants to start ground looping (I think to the right).  Need to anticipate this and be tapping or pressing hard left rudder (with brakes applied) to help keep straight until you slow to near stop.

With these lessons, I now feel like I have really good control over the Spit in taxiing, takeoff and landing.  Hope they help.

Here are my realism settings, if that helps. I have object markers (and instrument panel) that I switch off except now and then, I don't think it's related to the visibility of the front lines on the map.

 

I also see them in the briefing panel during the flight, don't you see them there?

 

It's a recent campaign for me, I've only played it in 4.004 I think. Have you run any mission recently, or was it in earlier versions?

Hi all,

 

As recommend post says, Do Not completely hide the HUD ingame since it will take the map GUI off. Use custom setting so you don’t have to turn off the HUD.

Sorry, it doesn´t work. I have used the same settings like Redglyph. I have disabled all of my mods and start the game in eglish too. But there are no frontlines. Here are my seetings and a picture of the map. Hope you can help?

Just to make sure, I started it in French but I still have the front lines.

You could also put the settings back to default, first in the campaign realism options (back to normal), then in the global settings for the user interface and so on, but I guess you've already tried.

 

Maybe start by checking if you see those front lines in other scripted missions and in career mode, to see whether it's specific to this campaign or a general issue. Try to have missions with the same map, too, again to check if that is specific to the map or general.

 

In the data subdirectory, there are *cache files (for each language), that you can remove and they will be rebuilt, but I don't think it's related to that. No harm in trying though.

 

There's no local file that I know of for DLC missions, so I see nothing to "refresh" there (maybe someone else knows more about this).

 

Perhaps a file is corrupted, but I don't know if there's a way to check or repair the game contents (there's no manual except a very outdated one, so...). If someone else knows, maybe.

I habe a frech installation of the Game and in all other scripted and no sciptec campaings i have the frontline
