Hmmm, when the goal is the nearest 100 meters it seems correct but useless if your goal is high precision. Example: Maastricht harbour is on 50meters, the map says Sea level. This information is too imprecise for an attack from high alt with a single 500kg bomb or a dive attack with the Arado on a single ship. The Finnish server for example offers correct altitude.

I seriously doubt that wartime cartography would have provided accurate-to-the-meter heights above sea level. We round to the nearest 50m / 100ft. You're probably going to get more accuracy loss from human ability to click the button at the right time than you are from rounding to the nearest 50m.

This campaign has definitely picked my interest in multipleplayer flying again - in addition to the FM adjustments.

Would it be possible in implement Refuel/Rearm/Repair on active airfields only and designate them with green smoke so they are easy to find on the airfield.

Great work!

Player airfields have RRR marked by smoke. If the enemy destroys the repair truck, the smoke stops and repair is disabled until the next mission.

Finally I simply don’t know about the accuracy of the cartography in that time ?

In any case I will deal with it ?

Total noob question.

How exactly do I log on to this server . . . or . . . any server these days?

I haven't played in a couple of years & things seem to have changed a bit in that time . . . as I recall.

I just purchased IL2 Normandy and was looking forward to playing online (even though I suck).  Used to be I could find servers fairly easy.  Now I have no idea what to do.  I went to the Combat Box page and it seemed to direct me to Discord (which makes me feel like an old, old man).  I have no idea what's happening there.  The links that it directed me to seemed dead.

So, is there a basic ABCD to getting online?  I used to fly in Combat Box and the Finnish server (mainly as a target drone, but I had fun).

You most likely have mods turned on. Most of the online servers do not allow mods or injectors. If you're using the stand alone version of IL2, uncheck 'use mods' in the launcher. If you're using Steam, go to your startup.cfg file and look for "modes" and change it to modes=0.  This should fix your problem in finding servers.

Is there any news as to whether/how the Combat Box server will be implementing the new feature locking folks to a faction when clicking on an airfield/faction for the first time?

In commemoration of Armistice Day, we are happy to announce a collaboration with the Ad Astra Great War server. We will be hosting Ad Astra's "Third Battle of Ypres" mission on November 11th for Friday Night Flights and Saturday Encore Flights!

Sometimes referred to as the Battle of Passchendaele, the Third Battle of Ypres was a monumental Allied offensive that took place in the late summer of 1917. The British Expeditionary Force (BEF) fought to capture the high ground of the Ypres Salient, one of the last bastions of defence in an otherwise German occupied Belgium.

As a result of its geographic location and time period, this battle is unique from a gameplay perspective. It offers perhaps the broadest historical mix of aircraft - a true melting pot between an outgoing generation of fighters (Sopwith Triplane, Nieuport 17, Albatros DII, etc.) and their newer counterparts (Fokker Triplane, Sopwith Camel, SE5). The map is also only a handful of miles from the Belgian coast, thus giving the experience a "channel battle" feel. On a clear day, you can even see the Cliffs of Dover!

Due to the brilliant mission design of =IRFC=Eccho, this experience will be one of the most immersive yet. Towns, airfields, and camps will be lit up in the pre-dawn darkness as you climb out towards the lines. Innovative, original gameplay mechanics will put you in the cockpit of vital artillery correction, photo reconnaissance, and bombing missions over the Ypres salient.

Who will prevail over Flanders?

I don't think we need to do anything to implement this. We have a 2 minute cooldown on changing factions, so once you click, you'll get locked for 2 minutes.

Our new Normandy campaign will be going live later this evening. Here's the change log.

Tech Alpha 10 “Normandy” November 2023

New Normandy campaign:

  • Thanks to efforts from the Combat Box community, we are pleased to add Normandy as a flyable map for the Apollo campaign. Objectives and airfields are all meticulously hand-crafted and we hope pilots will really enjoy flying along the historical beachheads and attacking both historical and “inspired” objectives.
  • The Normandy campaign has many, many objectives available, too many for us to include all at once, but we want to ensure people get to see all the cool stuff the community built. Apollo now intelligently randomizes objectives to be included in each run of the campaign, so every play-through will be slightly different.

Airframe availability changes:

  • Aircraft introduction dates are now used to determine which airfields actually have that airframe available. On the introduction date, airfields at least 50km from the front line will have the airframe. Each day, the 50km reduces by 1km until all airfields have the airframe.
  • Aircraft are no longer available in infinite numbers. At most fields there is a specific number of airframes (from 4 to 20) based on proximity to the front and how recently the airframe was introduced. The further from the front and the ‘older’ an airframe is, the more that are available. Airframes refresh periodically throughout each day.

Ground target overhaul:

  • We’re running an experimental setup that changes the damage model characteristics for some ground objects. Metal hangars and large industrial buildings are no longer destructible using small (50kg) bombs, and instead require larger ordnance to destroy them. We have modified only a few buildings so far. This change makes loadout selection more meaningful – instead of “bring as many small bombs as you can” players might sometimes choose larger bombs for “big game hunting” of these more heavily armored targets.

Gameplay changes:

  • Supply lost through player kills will now count regardless of the health of the airfield from which they flew. If the airfield has too little supply to penalize it, the supply is instead subtracted from a nearby friendly objective. This means that although players cannot hurt their own airfields too much through losses, the supply damage will be felt at least somewhere on their side.
  • Allied players now need to drop slightly more paratroopers to capture an objective, to account for the faster flying C-47 (vs the slower Ju-52).
  • Wind levels are now randomized based on the season and cloud type, and in particularly heavy winds pilots may encounter wind shear on takeoff or landing. Pay attention to the conditions and be extra vigilant if it’s windy!
  • Radar installations sometimes now include more than one radar dish. Players must destroy a majority of the dishes in order to knock out the radar.

Something wrong with the IL2 Stats reporting.

Respawned at airfield, shot down and enemy A/C, landed at the original airfield and ended mission.

Sortie Statistics:  pilot status: CAPTURED  aircraft status: Landed on Airfield

This ended my virtual Life.

Respawned and took off from same airfield on the next mission, mission ended and mission/map rotated.

Sortie Statistics:  pilot status: Healthy  aircraft status:  In Flight

Can the IL2 Stats be corrected?  Obviously I was not captured.

Thanks

There was a bug with influence zone calculation early in the campaign, which has now been fixed. Unfortunately we can't retroactively fix the stats website.

I have been playing for a year on CombatBox, trying to play 1 hour or 2, once or twice a week, and it is by far my favorite online server, in terms of immersion.

It is unfortunate that the server is only populated only on weekend, as I believe it desserves a lot more attention, as per the quality of the content you put together.

I just watched the tutorials you just produced for the new Normandy Campaign. I was quite impressed as I realized there is much more going on than what i had imagined.

You shall advertize more this type of videos as it gives you a lot of credit, and more visibility.

Thanks for this fantastic work. I hope you will keep finetuning this new campaign till it reaches its full potential.

Apollo X Campaign: Normandy Encore

Date/Time: Click Here For Your Local Date/Time
Server: Combat Box's Main Server
Comms: IL2 SRS @ srs.combatbox.net:6002

Attention all pilots,

We're thrilled to announce the commencement of a brand-new Apollo X Campaign only on Combat Box!! And this time, get ready for an adrenaline-fueled ride with a fresh set of challenges and features.

Axis Triumph in the Previous Campaign:
Before we begin discussing the new Encore Campaign and it's features, lets give a thunderous applause to the Axis forces for their triumphant victory in the previous Apollo X Campaign! They have moved mountains, splashed ships, and have pushed the Allies off of France. However, the tides have turned, and now it's time for the Allies to rally and reclaim their glory in the Encore of Apollo X. With the Encore of Apollo X, get ready for an adrenaline-fueled ride with a fresh set of challenges and features.

Supply Points Evolution:
Now, an objective's supply points have an optional "permanent coalition" setting, meaning they can be exclusively controlled by Allies or Axis. Once a coalition captures a supply point, it stays 'dead' and won't switch hands even if the opposing coalition gains control of the location on the map. As example, Juno Beach can be controlled by the Allies but will not be controlled by the Axis. Once it's destroyed by the Axis team, they will not be able to capture it (as it's a beach head for the Allied team).

Adjusted P-51D Availability:
To provide a more balanced experience, we've reduced the rate at which P-51Ds become available at the beginning of the campaign. While there may be a few at rear fields, the full force of the P-51D won't be unleashed until later in the campaign, introducing a unique challenge for both sides.

Enhanced Beach Targets:
At all beach targets, real ships have been reduced in number, making each engagement more impactful. Brace yourself for more traditional respawning AAA, adding an extra layer of difficulty to your missions. This change also helps with server performance, making the player experience meet the expectations that Combat Box regulars expect.

Allied Naval Targets Tweaks:
To avoid confusion with the beaches, we've tweaked the placement of Allied naval targets and given them new names. With this change, players won't be confused about what target they're attacking. Juno Beach or Juno Fleet? I've had too much to drink!

Randomized Ground Targets:
As we mentioned before, Apollo Normandy has so many objectives created by the community that we couldn't stacking all in a single campaign. Instead, all ground targets will be randomized, ensuring that players won't be attacking the same targets as in the previous Apollo X Campaign. Embrace the challenge of adapting your strategies to these new objectives.

Map Adjustments:
Several map adjustments have been made for a more balanced and exciting gameplay experience. The radar installations have been relocated away from Plumetot Airfield, train convoys now feature fixed carriages, and a new airfield, Falaise, has been added to the mix.

La Petite Vallee Runway Challenge:
Pilots, gear up for a challenge at La Petite Vallee! The 'usable' runway has been narrowed, requiring precision and skill during takeoff and landing. Tested by our experts with every plane type and fully loaded to bear, they were able to take off and land with full flaps consistently. However, this airfield isn't for the weak of heart or new pilot. The grassy field takes real skill to do take off and land successfully. Is your gaming chair good enough?

Join the Action:
Don't miss out on the excitement! Join us at Click Here For Your Local Date/Time as we launch the Encore of Apollo X Campaign Normandy on Combat Box. Whether you're a seasoned ace or a rookie pilot, there's never been a better time to test your skills and make your mark in the skies over Normandy! Fly high, fight hard, and I'll see you in the clouds!

Desire to Know More:
If you're eager to dive deeper into the Apollo X Campaign and connect with fellow pilots, look no further! Visit our Discord server, where our vibrant community thrives. Engage in discussions, strategize with teammates, and stay up-to-date with the latest campaign developments. The Combat Box team also responds rapidly there because your input is crucial to our success! But that's not all! If you're passionate about supporting the continued development of Combat Box and ensuring the skies stay filled with thrilling adventures, consider becoming a patron. Your support allows us to enhance the gameplay experience, introduce new features, and keep the excitement soaring!

Alonzo,

Quick question for you: which VR headset are you currently using and from which one did you switch from?  Reason for my asking is that, in spite of all of the hi-tech wizardry, I simply cannot get this game to crisply run on my G2 (I have top of the line GPU and CPU, as well as plenty of ram).  So before I fork out more $$ on a Pimax Crystal and end up in the same rabbit hole, I want to know my alternatives of what mid-level VR headsets people are satisfied with, until there is a future alternative to the Pimax heavy toaster crowning my noggin....  Thanks in advance.

Most of the admin team are on the newest Quest3, Varjo Aero, or the Crystal. Alonzo is using the Q3 if I recall. I'm using the Varjo Aero. Personally, I would recommend hitting up our Discord and asking this same question in the hardware channel; which is very active. There, you'll get a better response from not only us, but the community too.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us regarding the implementation of RCI in the Apollo campaign. We truly appreciate your input and the insights you've provided.

After careful consideration and internal discussions, we want to inform you that, at this time, we have decided not to make changes to the current setup. We understand the concerns you raised, especially regarding the impact on players who do not speak English.

While we may not be making immediate adjustments, please know that your feedback has been documented and will be kept in mind for future developments. We are always looking for ways to enhance our games, and player input plays a crucial role in shaping the direction we take.

What a weird thing to say.

RCI has been available in CB since early spring; you've been flying regularly all year, including prior Apollo campaigns.

RCI is only available when a human controller is on, which isn't terribly often during EU hours, otherwise it's the same ol' bot we've always had. ☺️

I personnally ADORE RCI, although it can be hard to understand for non native english speakers, I just wish there would be more RCI.

Even with RCI, I don t feel you get at personnal level a massive advantage, it just make some flights less boring, and with more action.

I would totally love to hear more RCI on European time.

Only 1/4 of the people on this planet speak English, and the language used in aviation is a select and simple phraseology (so that "foreigners" can understand more easily, hence for safety).

How many native English speakers on Discord or elsewhere think about this in flight in our sim? Not many...

Let's be understanding if so many people have left radio systems. Translating to speak or understand in the middle of a fight is a tricky business, believe me :)

Thank you. The paragraph #4 confirms my previous answer.

Little anecdote from 2 or 3 years ago on Discord. I was on one of the Axis Flight channels in English, among 3 other guys. After speaking (probably quite poorly) and not always having understood everything I  think, I heard a message from one of other saying (with is North American accent) "...too many people on this channel" ?

How many terms do you need to be able to understand to use it?  Your callsign, the controllers callsign, heading, bearing, turn or steer, left and right, altitude and numbers?  Obviously that's a bit of a challenge if you're not an english speaker, but it's not as if you need to learn to speak fluent English.

It's definitely worth tuning your setup for the G2 before thinking about changing headsets. Over in the VR subforum there are some threads on tuning. Basically, you should use an OpenXR runtime that bypasses SteamVR, reduce options that burn CPU time (Ultra preset is one), and be very careful with your overall number of pixels rendered.

For me on an RTX 4080 and 5800X3D processor I can get 90 FPS most of the time on my old Reverb G2. I quite like that I can run my Quest 3 at 80 or even 72 FPS, because that eases CPU burden, and IL2 is quite a CPU hog. I consider the Quest 3 an upgrade from the G2 because although technically the pixel density is a tiny bit lower, many more of the pixels are useful because the lenses are much better. You get a bit more vertical and horizontal FOV, too. The last Pimax headset I used was the Artisan and that turned me off that brand because my eyes were too close together to get in the sweet spot. They may have changed things since.

I think that would be true if everyone was strictly using spartan milsim lingo on the radio, but I'm sure there's quite a lot of people talking 'regular' English and probably RCI controllers too. If I were a non-native English speaker I can see why it would be difficult / intimidating. I wouldn't call it a reason not to fly the campaign, that's going a bit far I'd say!

Perhaps a part of the solution to encourage the use SRS and Discord by more players would be to create a list of simple locutions suitable for air combat and use them as a priority on the radio when necessary?

Many foreigners speak and understand English, but at too low level to understand everyday language, especially when it's spoken quickly or with an accent and, what's more, in a fight : simplification would therefore be useful IMO.

I think there are a lot of retired pilots and military aviators among us. If one or other could draw up a list of 20 or 30 simple phrases (for exemple) that might be useful and offer it to the community (which should be easy to do), may be it might encourage more non-native English speaker to use the radio?

I use the radio, although English is not my native language. My problem is that my hearing is damaged - I cannot hear high tones in the speech band, which is very important in English. However, sometimes I manage to understand the information, which increases my chances of participating in the fight. Overall, it's nice that there is such an option.

You mean like the Combat Box Systems Guide that includes how to setup SRS, use the bot, and talk on the radio properly?

In fact, I was thinking more about of a small list, a few clear, simple and basic expressions that would facilitate communication between pilots, rather than with the bot (perhaps this would be more relevant to Discord).

I'm often on your server with a friend who uses SRS (I've left this system myself). But very often it doesn't work properly (he doesn't get a reply from the bot). But maybe his messages aren't clear enough, or his French accent confuses the bot a bit (however he's a professionnal using very often the English language for his job).

On the other hand, as few people use SRS, calls for help, cover or enemy reporting are not heard or by so few persons, they get nothing in return (no response, no action).

My 2cts idea is a short, clear and easy-to-learn english essential phraseology, usable even for those with a low level of English, adapted to this server, to help pilots talk to each other more (and promote group work). For learn or training, online translators can say the phrases.

Only Ex :

English                                                             French                                                                            Deutch                                     Spanish                             ...

where are you / your position please?           quelle est votre position?                                             ...                                               ...                                      ...

I turn back to base                                           je retourne à la base                                                    ...                                               ...                                      ...

ennemy fighter / bomber grid 1234                chasseur / bombardier ennemi grid 1234                  ...                                               ...                                      ...

above clouds / below clouds                           au dessus des nuages / en dessous des nuages      ...                                               ...                                      ...

etc ...

For sure, the list should be translated by one of foreigner in each nation and used in priority in flight and more, when it's hot in the sky.
