SR603-Flowbee Posted September 20, 2019 Posted September 20, 2019 (edited) Fw 190 D9, 'Red 2' of JG300, Germany 1945, pilot unknown. This skin is semi-historical and based on impressions from a progression of 'Red 2' aircraft that flew with JG300, presumably due to losses and subsequent replacement. It is depicted in RLM colours and camo patterns prevalent at this time. I have tried to tone down the steel like reflections and polished aluminium to more resemble unpolished aluminium. Also I wanted to get more of a dust/dirt haze on the paint without introducing a metallic or a polished sheen. I did not want to clean up, I think it should actually be dirtier. This aircraft is on the losing side of a conflict being fought during the winter months of '44/45. https://www.mediafire.com/file/gttavliwz86czpl/Fw190D9_Public_Red_2_JG300_v4.dds/file Edited September 21, 2019 by Flowbee_603 tidy and tweak 10 3 1

SR603-Flowbee Posted September 21, 2019 Posted September 21, 2019 I wasn't quite happy with Red 2 as I felt it needed something to make it stand out more. More dirt, drama and chaos. So a couple of fresh repairs later it now has more bling. https://www.mediafire.com/file/yu4iesvgpj0wxr0/Fw190D9_Public_Red_2_JG300_v12.dds/file 8 3 1

Good point! I always like to put in some odd things to get people thinking and looking. Why this? Is it a mistake? In this case my thinking was, the bottom section of the fuselage has been repaired and left unpainted. Then I cleaned the section on the lower fuselage just under the band like someone was going to paint it but ultimately left it and now it is also dirty but not as much. There is also another piece under the cockpit, I do not know what the purpose of the piece is. It looks like a long slightly triangular strip of thicker metal. A strengthener perhaps. I noticed it was the wrong colour but rather than paint it and have it blend in, I thought it looked like a "go faster stripe". It looked cool. So I painted it like dark dirty metal and left it. I do not like finding mistakes as they spoil the skin but if something looks odd but interesting I tend to leave it. Often I find stuff when looking through original photographs that stands out or that does not make sense. I like trying to figure out why is this like that. I hope this explanation makes sense but I might just be nuts. Edited September 21, 2019 by Flowbee_603 2

The book is outstanding even though I have to read it slowly. The bit about the 12 year old boy being strafed resonates as the same thing happened to my Grandmother and mother while looking to buy food from farms in the countryside. They were walking along a country dirt road with a basket containing some eggs and also berries they had picked when a bright, shiny silver fighter aircraft attacked them. It made several passes firing at them as they were lying in the roadside ditch. My mother who was 8 years old at the time said she saw the pilot's face, he was laughing at them. This happened just south of Berlin. I can't remember the name of the town they lived in. Later on they escaped from Berlin by train. She said that the sound of the guns grew louder by the day like distant thunder. She left with her mother when the Russian guns were 30km away from Berlin. 1

Yes indeed I bought the kindle version of it. AFAIK an english version is also available from amazon. My grandfather, who was physically incapable to serve as soldier and was working as an independant and self-employed dressmaker during the war told me a similar story when he once drove to a neighbour village by bicycle in fall 1944 to deliver a new dress to a client. On his way back he got attacked by a single P-38 multiple times and had to jump from ditch to ditch which paralleled the road he drove on on both sides. He is absolutely certain it was a Lightning because of the double hull strukture. A real Gabelschwanzteufel. He ended that he was not only happy to escape with his life but also was happy that the attack occured on his way back from the client because both ditches were full of water and he was soaked when the american finally flew home. So he was happy to deliver the dress in good condition. 1 1
SR603-Flowbee Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 Thanks for the tip - I got the English Kindle version, now I will be able to read much faster. Excellent! The story about your grandfather was really good. I can't get over the fact that the Allied air power was so great that they would attack lone civilians on the ground.

Yes war is Hell. I know from my other grandfather who was in russia and told me about some habits of certain comrades on how to handle prisoners. He had a saying "The worst predator is man" - "Das schlimmste Raubtier ist der Mensch". I pray to God that we never will have to experience such grim times again. 2

Pierre64 Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 Excellent, as usually. You are the boss of the alpha layer !! (The "Ta 152" screenshots only need a blown canopy?). 1
SR603-Flowbee Posted September 26, 2019 Posted September 26, 2019 Thanks for your kind comment! You are right about the canopy, it is so racy looking. I kept meaning to use it but am on auto pilot as usual. Excuse for another screenshot though.. 1 1

SR603-Flowbee Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 (edited) Don't know if anyone is interested in this as this skin is already in the game but it is one of my favourites. Spudkopf extracted it and added the Haken Kreutz to it. It is a great skin but I just like a bit more radical weathering and reflections so I ran it through my template. Anyway here it is to judge for yourself. https://www.mediafire.com/file/6xhpkfwq7t2ndxo/fw190d9_skin4_yellow_13_v2.dds/file Update for more natural reflection.. http://www.mediafire.com/file/widdg9z97jegcv4/fw190d9_skin4_yellow_13_v3.dds/file Edited September 28, 2019 by Flowbee_603 13 3 2
Danziger Posted September 27, 2019 Posted September 27, 2019 Could you do that with the JG4 black 1 skin as well?
SR603-Flowbee Posted September 28, 2019 Posted September 28, 2019 Yes I could, only this time I spent more time getting the right balances for both the template and the Alpha. A much more natural effect I think. I will update yellow 13 tomorrow. I set the Alpha output to between 4 and 216 and on the template layers, desaturated the metal chips and set them to a darker mid grey. This combination removed the over reflections and the glow in the dark effect. https://www.mediafire.com/file/2yzqyu0fuxjx32w/fw190d9_skin_JG4_Black_1_v4.dds/file 10 4 2
SR603-Flowbee Posted September 30, 2019 Posted September 30, 2019 (edited) This picture on the net caught my attention due to the fact that it showed bare metal on a Dora. Again there is a lot of speculation involved as the original was almost certainly an artists impression taken from a black and white photo. After a lot of different attempts I ended up with this skin. I think the metal turned out well and is worth a look. The polished finish is purely for aesthetic effect and, from a German perspective, historically unlikely at this stage of the war. Even the use of bare metal is a sign of how desperate the Luftwaffe situation was in Germany during early 1945. https://www.mediafire.com/file/s2ut1j718beetsi/Fw190D9_Public_I.JG2_white_16_v25.dds/file Edited October 16, 2019 by Flowbee_603 * Much improved bare metal * 7 1 1

SR603-Flowbee Posted October 2, 2019 Posted October 2, 2019 Lol I thought it was supposed to be there. No chance of me fixing anything until I get the latest patch working.

SR603-Flowbee Posted October 16, 2019 Posted October 16, 2019 lol That is high praise indeed, thank you! Still busy trying to salvage 3D after the last patch. All the ground objects are floating.
