Price is super competitive. Same as the Odyssey+. With the better tracking and controllers... A real competition to the HP Reverb.

Out of all these options, Odyssey+ probably retains the best colors. It's the only one with a high res OLED display, and adjustable IPD (I got 69mm, wide German eyes to target my prey with).

That makes both headsets a gamble.

Although I have the original vive, I might give this a shot. I think the vive is very uncomfortable and the tracking sensors are not ideal for my room.

I like the increased resolution too!

At $399 the price point is pretty attractive. The thought of actually sitting (virtually) in the upcoming P-51 really is appealing.

What a bad surprise!

The resolution per eye is only 1280 x 1440, making only 3.6million pixels!!!  (the HP reverb is 2160x2160 per eye, making 9.3 million pixels).

This is a good compromise for low-end PCs, but bad for flight simulators with high-end PCs.

No real headphones like Rift! for a PC device!  (another cost compromise).

The fixing is not like the Rift, is the halo from WMR devices.

For me definitely a non-go for IL-2 VR.  For people playing other games it could be a good thing. But not me.

Yes, I`ve been looking into this. The `S` version doesn`t seem worth it to me so decided to go and get the Oculus Rift instead... However...

The website cancelled my order, I have no idea why, the money was all there. Checked Amazon, all mysteriously gone, except for dodgy 3rd parties, where the day before they were on sale. Scan - none. Finally found them still selling at Overclockers where I usually buy my PC stuff... But I`m kinda worried if even that`s going to come though.

It`s really like suddenly they don`t want to sell the Oculus Rift any more.

They - especially the big retailers - were already letting inventory deplete.

I suspect as far as Oculus store,  scalpers probably bought most of the remaining.

So I guess they want to push the `S`?

Have you tried buying through Facebook?

According to the below article as Rift are sold out in Amazon and Oculus.com the sales will move to Facebook, the new owners of Oculus.

I`ve already ordered from OverClockers and they`ve taken the money, so now I must wait on them. I`m not on FB anyway.

Just been talking to Overclockers. There`s a shortage and they`re waiting on them. If it takes longer than a week I`ll cancel.

Looks like I missed the window. Before I didn`t care about VR, now after I do the research and am willing to buy it, no one is selling.  Marvellous. Maybe I`ll go for the Vive instead.

Why are you buying the old one? It’s 3 year old tech. I bet a bunch of people are selling theirs, you could get a deal on a used one. @seafireliv

While the resolution is starting to get a little dated, the original Rift CV1 is still one of the best all around packages. Great tracking , great hand controllers, ease of use , good software. Plus it can run IL-2 pretty darn good now.

Other than the slight bump in resolution I consider the upcoming Rift S more of a sidestep and in some areas a step slightly backward from the CV1.

Maybe once the new Rift S in the hands of consumers we will begin to hear more and maybe it will surprise me.

The CV1 is getting hard to find because it was such a good headset and folks are buying them up.

I have been using mine pretty much daily now for over 2 years trouble free, the thing just works and does so quite well.

Hmmm. I’m getting very tired of squinting to make out bogies on my Rift CV1, am hoping even the modest 40% pixel bump + third sub pixel fixes it.

I'm tempted too, despite this being a very minor upgrade.

I'm also interested in how comfortable that headmount is, because the original strap for the vive is pretty bad

Well I`ve had the time to do some more research in this strange phase... and while the Rift S seems a downgrade in some respects, it`s also an upgrade in others. It seems the res will be indeed slightly better (good for flight sims) and I won`t have to faff around with multiple sensors. However I`m a bit iffy about the lack of manual optical pd adjustment. Once upon a time I worked in optics and we always had a manual version of everything since automatic never solved every pd issue of everyone. One thing you`re taught in that field is how to do eye measurements manually, never totally rely on the software...

Not allowing manual pd adjustment is a mistake... Some people will be left out.

Still researching.

I wouldn't buy either of the original headsets, vive or rift, maybe a used rift for like 150 bucks. The vive having the worst screens out of all the headsets released commercially. Do not taint your new experience with such tragic screens.
