=RS=GiantPLANK Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 (edited) Hi All, So I finally bit the bullet. I couldnt resist and bought the Odyssey + in the sales. 299 USD is just too good from what reviews i have seen here and on YouTube. This is my first time with VR other than using a friends PSVR which is what sold me on VR! Can anyone explain or provide links to other posts that will help a total noob setup and play IL2? What other software do I need (3dmigoto? steamVR? or does samsung have their own?) How do I set the O+ up in IL2? How and where do i change settings to improve performance? Last one is important as my PC is, errrm lets say SUB-optimal. i5 4460, gtx 970, 8GB vengeance, not sure about CAS. Nothing is OC'd. I was going to look into upgrading the PC this year but when the whole RTX thing blew up and the prices just jacked way up, it kind of put me off. Thought I might try and make do, even just to taste the potential of VR in IL2.... Hope you can help! GC Edited March 5, 2019 by GiantCorn

BP_Lizard Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 Are you two related? ? I also got the same deal and awaiting delivery. Currently have an HTC Vive with Gear VR mod. Its setup was pretty much plug and play. But I read that the O+ needs a bit of tweaking to run BoX on. I think you have to install Steam and Windows Mixed Reality for Steam (available on Steam.) 1
Dagwoodyt Posted March 5, 2019 Posted March 5, 2019 (edited) Ptk "black dot" , "no haze" and "polished canopy" mods are what I use. VoiceAttack will also make VR life much easier to manage. Edited March 5, 2019 by Dagwoodyt 1

OK thanks Lizard I will look into downloading both. 18 hours ago, Dagwoodyt said: Ptk "black dot" , "no haze" and "polished canopy" mods are what I use. Could i also use JGME (cant remember the exact initials) mod extractor software for these mods? If i use these mods can I still plat MP mode online on WoL etc?

IL-2 GB has an in-game setting to enable Mods On mode. If you tick that you can use mods, untick and you can't. MP server admins can decide if they allow Mods On mode or not, but usually they don't. So MP experience with mods is very much limited. 1

So maybe ill just use the game without fancy mods then. sound a bit complicated enough with just setting things up!

Forgot to mention - the 3dmigoto mod does not need Mods On mode so it's good for MP and it is quite essential for online competitiveness in VR. 1

Yes i have heard about this one. Ill look into it for sure. have heard its pretty essential. hope it wont crush my performance. My rig is very very low/old and will likely struggle with basic VR as it is....

The father of this mod, Mr. lefuneste says there is essentially no performance impact (2-3 FPS maybe) and I don't notice it either but tbh I never tested and practically I never play without 3Dmigoto so can't really compare.

LOL
blitze Posted March 6, 2019 Posted March 6, 2019 Main thing is to just enjoy - oh and add a little Fairy Dust (tm) for your settings to take flight ?
JonRedcorn Posted March 6, 2019 Posted March 6, 2019 My odyssey will be here at any minute now, I will help you out when I get it in hand. Only thing I am worried about for you is your PC specs, they are pretty low for VR especially in a game like this, most games will probably run alright for you but the 8 gigs of ram and that gpu are going to struggle in il2. If you can get that cpu oc'd as high as possible that will help greatly. Just hate to see people with lower spec computers end up disappointed with VR. It's a shame hardware is so expensive right now, but you can actually grab 8 gigs of ram for very cheap now, probnably 40 bucks. Ram prices have absolutely plummeted. A 1660ti would be a really good upgrade for a decent price, think they are around 250. 1

I know my PC sucks. I built it 5 years ago and was due for an upgrade but then missus needed a new laptop, plus the debacle with GTX > RTX prices going into monopoly money prices just crushed the dream......for now. I already know I will love VR. I tried my mates PSVR and it blew me away. Even gogle cardboard let me see the potential for immersion. I am tempering my expectations for likely vomit inducing frame rates. just thought id get the odysssey + now while on sale. I can wait 6 months to scrape cash together for a better CPU, GPU, RAM and MoBo.

You can check out my thread for my thoughts on it, you'll just need to download the windows mixed reality for steamvr software on steam for it to work with il2. But that's it, real easy to setup, much easier than the oculus. Performance was a bit lacking, so definitely prepare to be running the game on low settings, unfortunately this game on low looks like it's from 2003. Would definitely look into purchasing a gpu 1080 or above. 2
-332FG-Gordon200 Posted March 8, 2019 Posted March 8, 2019 Jon, The Odyssey has inside out tracking. There are two 'cameras' in the HMD (head mounted display) that look outward to sense stationary objects in the room. It orients itself to these and adjusts the image you see according to the stationary real objects around you changing position. To do this well you need to have adequate room lighting. I'm a cheap old guy who only had a single bulb burning in my room and was having poor tracking and visual stutters in game. One afternoon sun was shining into my room I went for a flight and things were great. That's when I remembered how the device works and splurged for an additional light bulb for evenings. Another cheap trick is to experiment with wearing the head band in different ways. It is not meant to be worn like a hat but at an angle instead. It should be low on the back of your head and about mid forehead. This will better seal the face mask and prevent outside light (god rays). For me the nose area is snug but not uncomfortable. Let's see, so far I have a big nose and I'm cheap. If you wear glasses you should check out getting prescription lenses for the HMD. These guys make a fantastic product with 10-14 day delivery. https://widmovr.com/product/odyssey-prescription-lens-adapters/ VR Cover makes replacement face pads that help seal out god rays and allow your eyes to be a wee bit closer to the lenses for better vision. https://vrcover.com/product-category-windows-mixed-reality/ Hope these tips help. Cheers
