Panzerlang Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 One of my squad-mates talked me into it, an Oculus Rift headset. Holy MoG! ? Ok, it's borderline doable on the graphics (think like mid nineties 17" monitor at 1024 x 780 kind of resolution quality) but the whole actually being in the cockpit thing, mind bending. And flying the plane more effectively, oh yeah. I couldn't fly like it with TiR. I might damage my neck trying to look behind but the overall experience is a whole new dimension of simming experience. And the cockpits, pure art. 6 3
DD_Arthur Posted January 29, 2019 Posted January 29, 2019 I hear Flying Circus is pretty astonishing in VR too....... 4
40plus Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Can concur, VR is life changing especially in Flying Circus.
=EXPEND=CG_Justin Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 VR is definitely a game changer. I got my Vive just a week before I had shoulder surgery 3 weeks ago, so I had to shelve it just as I was scratching the surface. It's an "OMFG" game changer. But its MUCH more physical than TrackIR, so I have to put it on hold while I heal. I honestly cant wait to hook it back up though....its like Davinci's dream of flight...I long to return. Having grown up in the 80s and 90s, I was always dreaming of this technology....and once I got it my hands on it, I had to give it up. Lol Its really an OMG factor. My good friend =EXPEND=Tripwire helped me set it up via TS from Oz....and he can tell you how gobsmacked I was. I'm hammering my physical therapy hard just to get back "IN THE COCKPIT ". I dont have any experience with other VR games, but this, to me, is life changing. It's a boyhood dream realized. Thanks a million to the team for bringing this old dude the most joy I've had since the birth of my 4 boys. Enjoy my freind...its really something special. 3 4
dburne Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Welcome to the wonderful world of VR! Got my Rift in Jan 2017, have been gaming with it since - on almost a daily basis. Not gamed on the monitor since, and I still have that great feeling every time I put the headset on. Enjoy!

[PFR]Sarpalaxan Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Open Cockpit and leaning to the side to see through the gaps between the Wings. 1 1
taffy2jeffmorgan Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Have often wondered about VR, I take it that all vision is wrap around and the turning of your head gives the same effect as TrakIR, but how about your joystick control buttons and keyboard is that all in by touch, is it possible to look down and see the controls ?
[PFR]Sarpalaxan Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 It is possible to look down above the Nose and there is a front cam in the vive (Altho i haven't gotten thet thing to work. But for 95% of the imputs you want to feel them.
Panzerlang Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 Just now, taffy2jeffmorgan said: Have often wondered about VR, I take it that all vision is wrap around and the turning of your head gives the same effect as TrakIR, but how about your joystick control buttons and keyboard is that all in by touch, is it possible to look down and see the controls ? There's not much in the way of peripheral vision, it's like wearing goggles that have the lenses set quite forward in their frames (around half an inch from your eye sockets). Possibly realistic for WW1 pilots, a bit off for WW2 ones. Head turning is 1:1 scale, so you have to actually strain your neck to look around per reality. To see your keyboard you have to move the headset out of the way, so it's best to have everything set onto your HOTAS and do it all by feel. I can get to my keyboard by feel for the escape button (for some reason the mapping to a throttle button hasn't taken, going to try it on a different one).

Yeah, Gamechanger is the best word to describe the dimension this little tool adds to the flying. Cant go back for sure! Talking about gamechanger, I highly recommend "Alien Isolation" + VR mod to every VR user. Bought it before the christmas and even managed to find the balls to get into the "game". What a terrifiying one of a kind (i am talking 1st time in 30+years of videogames!) journey this was. The Alien universe and design, the graphics, the atmosphere, the sound - just wow! But make sure you dont have any undiagnosed heart problems, it is very very terrifying! Edited January 30, 2019 by ironk79
JG4_Sputnik Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Welcome to the club mate ? I got mine early 2017 and never flown without it. I have more fun now sitting in a parked Stuka looking around than I had in all of my Il2 1946 2D Stuka dives ? 1

With all of the wind and engine noise from you and adjacent planes coupled with the ability to lean and look in almost every direction really amplifies the sensation of flight for me. 1

If you haven't tried it then you are missing out on the party. Something like flying circus where digital readouts aren't needed is ideal. Quite simply if you don't sit there for the first five minutes with a slack jaw repeating 'F*ck me', over and over then you're not alive. 1

I noped out of some titles I tried... Alien Isolation is on the list though. Really hoping for a Valve announcement at GDC about the headset it seems they have been working on. 6 hours ago, taffy2jeffmorgan said: turning of your head gives the same effect as TrakIR, It's 1:1, if you are in a hard turning fight and the enemy plane is opposite you on your lift line, your head will be directly up looking at your ceiling.

CUJO_1970 Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Every single person, almost without exception has been extremely enthusiastic about their experiences with VR in this sim. It almost makes one want to go buy one of those fancy contraptions ? 2

I add a fan blowing on me(two actually) and it adds even more to the immersion in VR vs closed cockpits. Also, I am expecting my Pimax to be delivered any day now and really excited to see how a wide FoV and increased clarity adds to the immersion level. Just wish they would allow data export for tactile transducers/motion....just the final missing piece for IL-2 series. Edited January 30, 2019 by Torso 1

It is a game changing experience.

352nd_Tazman Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 This tech is definitely a dream come true for me! IL2 is great with it! I recommend ELITE DANGEROUS as well if you are like me and want your own space adventure experience. The sense of scale you get with VR is incredible. You FEEL like you are entering a giant space station as it engulfs your tiny ship! It's amazing every time to me, and I have been playing over a year now.
56RAF_Bo Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 I'm also totally blown away. I have been a keen flightsimmer since the amiga 500 fighter duel by Jaeger software in the 1980ies and IL2 VR is far the most impressive experience so far. VR has brought it up to a different level. The details are amazing. Fantastic piece of work. I have pre ordered the Bodenplatte and look forward to the upcoming updated :-) 1
Dagwoodyt Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 VoiceAttack helps a great deal if your HOTAS is button-challenged. Escape, function and spacebar keys are easily accessed by touch. Peeping thru edges of HMD is, for the most part, unnecessary. 2
Izel Posted January 30, 2019 Posted January 30, 2019 Another great tip for reducing keyboard dependency and increase your HOTAS functionallity (I got this tip from another thread) is using joy2key to map one or two HOTAS buttons as Shift and/or Ctrl keys, then you can reuse and map multiple commands to the remaining buttons. The poster in the original thread mentions that he managed to map full engine controls to his HOTAS config by using this technique.
taffy2jeffmorgan Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 What's the procedure with the VR setup, i see that there is an enable button in the game. what then ! connect via USB into the tower case and plug in power and play .?
Docjonel Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Got my Rift for Christmas. Found set up was surprisingly easy and trouble free, logged on to IL-2 and... OMG LOOK AT THIS COCKPIT IT"S JUST SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I mostly do single player and my time is limited but the experience is gobsmacking.

The Rift requires x3 USB slots and one HDMI. USB 3.0 is stipulated (one for each sensor, one for the headset) though many people say it all runs fine on USB 2.0. Getting the game to be seen can be glitchy unless I fire up the Oculus software, then let the sensors see the headset while I fire up IL2. It also requires the Steam VR API software (6GB download from Steam). The VR box has to be ticked in the game's settings too of course. Edited January 31, 2019 by Uffz-Prien

As for playing BOX and Flying Circus in VR, both are outstanding in VR.
dburne Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 Agree on Voice Attack, I love it and it is great for using in VR.
Dagwoodyt Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 (edited) Rift has better tracking than Odyssey variants but is more complex and expensive to set up. Odyssey has better colors. For those reasons I favor the Odyssey. Never had a Vive so can't comment. VoiceAttack takes bit of time to understand but has many useful options. For instance, in the I-16 you can set the number of seconds the flaps crank is operated. Also, love the Zira voice readback of commands in-game. Edited January 31, 2019 by Dagwoodyt
SCG_motoadve Posted January 31, 2019 Posted January 31, 2019 I have had Oculus Rift , Vive Pro and Odyssey + Odyssey + is the winner for me. Better resolution,(same as Vive pro for less than half price) better colors, better sweet spot than Vive Pro. Comfort , Rift wins. Odyssey is the worse, but still its my choice for now.
