TheBlackPenguin Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 Seems people are having fun! I chose the Vive for personal reasons, they have been supporting Linux (although not directly with Vive yet) :), honestly reading so many reviews and opinions did not help all that much lol. So, obviously going to be using this on an i9 9600 3.6 ghz with 32GB ram and an Nvidia 2070. Sim use will be Il2 of course, DCS and X-Plane 11 on Linux (they have a thread on X-Plane VR on the Org). Anyone recommend settings for Il2 and perhaps DCS? I think I am insane, that was expensive for the starter kit, but better than the package on Amazon....

This is a must. 2) this one you won't like, but if you want the best experience with vivepro then you must do a GearVR lense mod. I have vivepro as well and the original fresnel lenses it comes with offer a very very small sweet spot that you'll be struggling to find. Some folks on this forum actually returned the hmd because of it. But if you plan on sticking with it (like I did and I can't go back to anything else after it) then GearVR lense mod is required to get additional 20-30% of clarity from the headset. ?
SCG_Fenris_Wolf Posted January 23, 2019 Posted January 23, 2019 (edited) As the Nordman said! Either do it yourself, or find some double-right-handed buddy to do it for you - or find people who have done it in your vicinity. Everyone says GearVR lenses are a must. I've only seen it without, and I agree with moosya on the default ones. @TheBlackPenguin The i5 9600K is properly set up for VR. You must be able to disable the AVX offset and overclock it to 5GHz. The 9600K can easily do it, it's a beast. But you must unchain it. No way around that. Edited January 23, 2019 by SCG_Fenris_Wolf FYI there is only a 9600K afaik, there is no non-K version
TheBlackPenguin Posted January 24, 2019 Author Posted January 24, 2019 Thanks for the replies, don't know why I said I9 lol. Its the i7-9700K :). Probably thought 9th generation and threw the 9 where it didn't belong. I have just ordered GearVr lense with the adapter, doesn't seem too bad to install (although I will try the set first to make sure it works before voiding the warranty).

Yes, give it a try first. The sweet spot is very small and you need to really hone in on it with the way you put on the headset, i.e. keep it high on your face. But the amount of godrays with the original lenses is crazy high, which may be exaggerated by the small sweet spot. Once you suffer through that do a gearvr mod and boy you'll be surprised with the difference. But first make sure your PC and game config is properly optimized to run VivePro to begin with. I.e.: - steamVr is at 100% (no more, however it'll still give you a nice 2000x2000 pixels per eye) - medium game settings, low/med shadows, med/high clouds, no HDR, sharpen on, blurry landscape. Once you get 90fps with whatever config you end up with then start evaluating the HMD itself. Otherwise low fps with small sweet spot can dissuade you from enjoying it altogether. ?
