does anyone know if it's possible to use a multiplayer server as a basis for a single player practice map? i'd like to practice bombing and they usually have some pretty good targets.

thanks!

You can edit the mission file that is downloaded. Just remove the airfield spawns (fakefields), add a player plane, change mission type to Single, save to the Missions folder.

1. In the Search and Select menu, choose Find Mission Objects.

2. Under Filter, select Airfield.

3. Under Double click result options, (bottom right), select:

     - Move camera to object

     - Select object

     - Select in Mission tree (moves mission tree to show object but doesn't select it)

     - Select Working Group

4. Click the Find button (at the top).

5. Double-click one of the results in the table on the left.

You have to close the dialog box to work with the object found. You have to
re-open Find Mission Objects for every object in the results list that you want
to work with. Your options are kept so you just need to click Find again.

See "Find Mission Objects Dialog", on pg. 201 of the editor manual, for more details.

Aside: Also see "Find the Group Containing an Icon That You Want to Select" (pg. 25) for a slightly convoluted method to select an icon that is part of a group but you don't know what group it's part of. Maybe there's a more elegant way to do this.

Not sure what is, and what is not working in your mission, but you could be running into the situation where the mission logic is run by players spawning.  Now that it is a single player mission, and players are NOT spawning, things might not be getting triggered.

I would suggest, if you like a MP mission you have flown, and want to do it as a single, just host it.   Start the game in online mode, go to multiplayer, dogfight (assuming this is a dogfight cause if its a coop you run into more  issues), create server.   Set the realism options you want, and then locate the mission in the list of missions you have flown.  If the same issues you have when you fly the mission as a single occur when you fly it as a MP mission, then you just may need more people in the game for it to work right.

While having players spawning might be the problem in this case.

Unless the following was fixed by the 3.008 updates. You cannot use the In Game Create Dogfight server to test mission logic for a number of things as the Checkzone and Proximity MCUs do not work period.

thanks all. i figured out i can also copy groups of objects into the clipboard and open a new map and paste them in the same spot. i mostly wanted examples of the depots and defensive positions that you can't find in a quick mission

If you are going to do that (copy and paste groups) highly suggest before you copy  the group, type in the coordinates of the "group" icon into the description properties of the group.  that way when you past  it, if it happens to move, (and it will move...), you can edit the coordinates of the group you just pasted so it is pretty much exactly where it should be....

and remember, you loose all links to objects outside the group when you do this...

Alternatively, you can select objects, MCUs, and groups and save them to a file. Then you can import that file into another mission (that uses the same map) and the objects, MCUs and groups are placed in the exact same location. For details, see the following in the editor manual

  • Save Objects, MCUs, and Groups (pg. 28)
  • Import Saved Objects, MCUs, and Groups (pg. 29)
  • Access Saved Objects, MCUs, and Groups in the Object Library (pg. 30)

Note: Contrary to the current manual, if you want to save items to import later (rather than choose them in the Object Library > Groups), I suggest that you save them in your own personal folder that you create under the data/Template folder.

I find that saving them in the data/Missions/Groups folder makes them easily importable in the FME by using the 'Groups' button on the right. If you perform an Import the groups will often end up lower left of your map, if you bring them in from the Groups button they will be near to your cursor.
