BOO Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 Does anyone have a source for or link to a good textured background I could use to create the less uniformed metal skin base? Thanks in advance BOO
Raptorattacker Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 (edited) If you're using Photoshop then render the 'clouds' pattern in b+w in a new layer and on 'overlay' settings over the metal parts when making up your Normal Map. Edited October 29, 2018 by Raptorattacker 1
BOO Posted October 29, 2018 Author Posted October 29, 2018 Thanks Raptor but im a gimp (so to speak) - im not sure gimp has those texture patterns or if it does when they are

The cloud pattern is way too big to be very noticeable. I'm looking for something like what @ICDP uses for the Yak-1Bs127 metal panels. No luck so far.

ICDP Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 (edited) A very easy way to do this is to take a large image of crumpled tin foil, you can take your own, or get one from Google. Then convert that into a normal map, then add a bit of guassian blur to take away the sharp edges and you have your base. This is what I did and once done it is used in all my normal maps where there are metal surfaces. I have a basic PSD file I use as a base for all my normal maps. It includes a dented metal layer and a colour guide to help with orientation of your bumps. Feel free to use it. Around 60% transparency gives a subtle effect. https://btcloud.bt.com/web/app/share/invite/yklrqsViZw Edited October 29, 2018 by ICDP 1 4 2

Thanks in advance. SimSonius I only have it as a Gimp file now but there are only 3 layers that need to be exported as pngs for to be drapped into a PSD. This i a link to my one drive that ill keep up for a while in case ICDP dosent swing by. https://1drv.ms/u/s!AnRk5ek6XHD7g7IoXLtpu2RKALAEgg 1
