Lense mod for VIVE

Recommended Posts

I recently tried replacing my Vive lenses with the Samsung Gear VR lenses and the result is incredible!

The Samsung Gear VR lenses are clear glass lenses as opposed to the Vive's Frensel lens.  So replacing the default Vive lense with these gives you a clearer image, it's easier to focus on objects in your periphery, and god rays are very much reduced.

The Gear VR only cost me 15-20$ (You can find them on amazon or ebay for very cheap prices), and I went to a local library to 3d print the lens adapters which cost me less than 2$.

Basically you need to 3d print an adapter for the lenses, pop them in, and do a little bit of modification to your config file to reduce 'barrel distortion.'

The end result is well worth it.

My only caution is be VERY careful when you pop out the original Vive lenses.  I nearly hit the screen with my screwdriver when I was prying them out.  You also have to be very careful not to scratch or get any dust on the screens behind the lenses, because even the smallest scratch or spec of dust is very noticeable when you have the headset on.

It's a little risky (considering the price of the headset), but I highly recommend making this upgrade if you are a hands on person.  It completely changes the headset and makes the image much more crisp.  There is still a little bit of screen door effect, but it's not that much of a bother.  The new lenses make a huge difference!

Here's the reddit post for anyone interested.  Just be very careful if you do try to install the mod.  Be slow.  Be patient.  I find the work was absolutely worth the effort!

Did it a while ago. The clarity difference was amazing. But do you guys notice that the screen door effect is more pronounced? As in ‘in your face’ obvious? That’s my experience no matter how much I tweak it.

Yes, the screen door effect is much more evident, but it doesn't bother me.  The added clarity and the ability to focus on things at the edge of the screen makes the slight eyesore of the screen door meaningless.  The difference is night and day before and after the lens mod

I didn't think the Vive Pro had that much better of a resolution.  It is nice to hear it is nice and clear for you.

word of caution - yesterday my all-in-one vivepro cable took a dump. The picture/audio goes in&out. Essentially the cable got twisted/crumpled on the back of the hdm where it hangs down.

The kicker:  Vive has NO replacement cables available for sale anywhere. I contacted the support and even though they honored the 'warranty' cable replacement the ETA to get it is about 4 weeks. :(  I have no words. This is a pretty short sighted product launch/support.

There's a wireless kit coming on 09/24 .. for $300...

holy crap, how I'll be suffering from IL2 withdrawal..

I had cramped, faulty cable on my Rift once too. Oculus replaced it under warranty even though I might have been over the two years warranty period. I'm not sure because my original purchase was more than two years ago but I had a Rift replacement early this year.

Anyway Oculus has replacement cables for sale on their site but not with retailers which would have been my first choice probably.

They sent it quite fast though. I believe your four weeks is probably a very much over-secured estimate on VIVE's part and you'll get it much sooner.

thanks for the words of encouragement. I had rift for 1.5 years before going to vivepro and the cable was still intact, so it's definitely a design deficiency on vive's part. Also, they do sell the separate cable for the non-pro vive...... Also, i only used the headset for 6 months and the cable's already busted ... anyway.. never had these kinds of issues before in my life :) and then bam! .. can't play my favorite game!

i've managed to stabilize the cable disconnections by using plenty of duct tape and zip ties.. Now my headset looks like some cyber-Frankenstein helmet, lol..  and it's ALIVE! :) Hopefully it'll last till I get the replacement cable.

play IL2 on the monitor? Are you kidding me? :) No way, Jose!
