Nothing says you're losing like using a fighter as a bomber because you can no longer protect your bombers with the fighters. By 1943 all LW aircraft had to be multi-role. Their multi-engine bomber-Geschwaders having been all but destroyed. As if being a LW pilot wasn't a difficult enough job you now are now Jack-of-all-trades and doing the work of multiple pilots and crew. No wonder they resorted to munching handfuls of Pervetin tablets, despite official government attempts (half-arsed, like our 'lockdown') to limit and even ban the drug. It was more a case of the fact the Fw190A was a better ground pounder than one of these. It's also forgetting the point that the post right above yours shows a P47D loaded for ground attack. Those Allied air forces really must have been having it rough by late 1944 ? 2

You must consider the bigger picture and look at the different circumstances of the allies and the LW. The allies could have all the fighter bombers they liked (and they did like them) because they had air superiority in every aspect excepting high scoring aces. a lot of targets to hit in support of their advance. plenty of pilots and losses of men and materiel replaced quickly large quantities of medium and high level bombers destroying the LWs aircraft factories, synthetic fuel plants and airfields. between 10 and as high as 20 to 1 advantage over the Luftwaffe at times. more comprehensively trained pilots and aircrew. a policy of resting aircrews periodically and using them as experienced instructors for the replacements an uninterrupted fuel supply The LW, however, was short of pilots, (a shortage beginning as early as Autumn 1940) short of fuel, even Synthetics due to allied bombing. was invested in designs that were fast becoming obsolete or could not be developed further (Ju87 a good example) was supported by an industry not organized on a war footing until 1943 and an aircraft industry riven with rivalries and nepotism was commanded by a drug addicted dilletante had a training infrastructure that was broken, lacking instructors, fuel, suitable airframes and local air superiority to train safely in. (trainers shot out of the sky, loss of pupil, instructor and training plane!) was receiving very poorly trained replacements by late '44/45 The reason Antons were now bombers as it was becoming impossible to train bomber crews (gunners, navigators, radio operators etc) in Germany by late 44/45. Pilot was the only aircrew job left. Hence my assertion that the appearance of an Anton in place of a Heinkel or Dornier at the front was a sign of the dire state of the LW in the last 2 years of the war. Early on the first of these jagbombers were flown by re-roled bomber pilots and crews retrained as pilots as the LW had decided to scrap many of their remaining bombers due to high losses and an inability to replace them.
