Need guidance for startup

Hello everybody,

I have been playing RoF and Il2 1946 for a long time now (some of you may recognize me from the RoF-forum) and finally thought it's time to try out Il2 Great Battles as well. But I have some questions for you guys. First off I would like some guidance on which Il2 to buy (premium-version). Currently I am thinking about getting Bodenplatte, since it has got the most appealing planeset to me. I know it's still in EA and I'll have to wait some time for the map and the career, but that's fine for me.

Other than Bodenplatte I'm thinking about Moscow or Kuban. I'm honestly not very into the Stalingrad planes.

Secondly: How big is the difference in flight models from 1946?

And third: is an Edge Sergeant computer with GTX 1050 ti, Ryzen 3 1200 and 8 gb RAM enough to run this game smoothly on high settings? I checked the system requirements but I know there has been a lot of changes in graphics etc. since they were published.

I'd be thankful for your help and I look forward to see you in the skies!

Kuban has probably the nicest map in the game so far. Battle of Moscow has, I feel, one of the best planesets for uniqueness, including the MiG-3 and I-16. I love both those birds for different reasons.

If your objective is to play multiplayer, its often good to start with Battle of Stalingrad because most multiplayer scenarios will have planes from that planeset, whereas Moscow maps on servers will not have Kuban planes, and Kuban scenarios will not have Moscow planes. But usually there are a couple from Stalingrad no matter what.

Its not like that all the time, but it seems to be generally true.

The flight model, engine management, physics, ground handling are all much more sophisticated than in 1946. I migrated from 1946 about 6 months ago myself. Takeoffs and landings are a bit more difficult (depending on the plane - MiG for example is a pain until you get used to the tailwheel). Stalls, spins, gyroscopic effects...all much more closely modelled.

If you're coming from 1946 you'll be in good shape, but you'll probably have to take some time to really get to know the planes.

@SYN_Requiem has a series of tutorials on familiarization on every plane, and Sheriff does a few How-to videos focusing on flying and fighting in many of the planes. I'll put a link to Requiem's youtube below.

Hello and welcome, Flying_Bear

If it's beautiful scenery and lend lease aircraft (Spitfire, P-39) that you want I would go for Battle Of Kuban. Well, I would say that because that's what I've got!

It's also worthwhile bearing in mind that All of the following Collector Aircraft are compatible with Battle Of Kuban:

Spitfire Mk.VB

La-5 Series 8

P-40E-1

Yak-1b Series 127

La-5FN Series 2

Hs 129 B-2

Ju 52/Зm

Bf 109 G-6

If you buy the Premium Edition it comes with the Spitfire Mk Vb and Hs 129 B-2

I'd guess that my Rig is similar to yours, I have a low end CPU and a graphics card only a tiny bit better than yours.

Full Spec:

6th Gen core i5 6400 2.7 Ghz, turbo boost to 3.2 Ghz (I don't know how to enable turbo boost, so for now it runs at stock 2.7 Ghz) on socket 1151

16 Gb DDR4 ram memory (2100 Mhz)

M.2. 120 Gb SSD

Asus GeForce GTX 1060  6 Gb DDR5

Peripherals :  I would strongly recommend these if you're looking for an inexpensive H.O.T.A.S

Thrustmaster T.16000m Joystick, twist rudder

Saitek Pro Flight Throttle Quadrant :  Has 3 levers for Throttle, Prop Pitch / R.P.M., and Mixture or Radiators. Plus six buttons

I was quite surprised at how high I could crank the settings considering advice given from other Forum members.

Settings - High

Screen Res. - 1920x1080

Shadows - High

Mirrors - Medium

Distant Landscape Detail - x4

Horizon Draw Distance - 100 Km

Landscape Filter - Blurred

Grass Quality - Distant

Clouds Quality - High

Target FPS - Off

Antialiasing - 2

Gamma - 0.9

Full Screen

Sharpen

Use 4k Textures

In game Head Up Display (HUD) - OFF

Those settings give me a stable 90 - 100 Fps on the Kuban Map with no AI aircraft.

Happy Flying Flying_Bear

Salute!

If you only buy Bodenplatte now, you really won't be able to do much for several months. SP won't be much fun without the maps, and the Bodenplatte planes won't be available in most MP servers.

The three are really quite similar. Kuban is the latest release; its terrain is slightly more interesting than Moscow.

It depends on the aircraft. In general, I'd say that it is slightly more difficult to operate aircraft effectively in all phases of flight. Engine management is particularly different.

It's certainly enough to enjoy the game at 1080p for most people. The graphics card is quite limiting; everything else is adequate (GTX 1050 ti is much slower than GTX 1060).

I stand corrected, I wasn't aware of a big difference...

Hello guys thank you all for your replies. I am thinking about getting a 3gb GTX 1060 instead

BoS is best for MP as others said.

Between Kuban and Boddenplate i would go for Kuban, it has very nice variety in it's planeset not to mention amaizing looking map.

You have plenty of time to preorder Boddenplate in the next 6-8months and by that time BoK will keep you occupied!

Cool, that graphics card runs IL-2 Sturmovik just fine, but I would go for the 6gb DDR5 GTX 1060 if you can afford it, that will give you a more future-proof setup for other games. it costs about £40 to £70 more than the 3gb version, according to what I searched for on Amazon.co.uk. There might be cheaper cards elsewhere than on the UK market, I don't know where you live.

And this 6gb GTX 1060 is only £40 more expensive:

I'm probably not the most informed person to respond.... but I have read that Nvidia cards work much better than AMD for this simulator. Don't ask me why!

Checking out the specs of an RX 580, on paper, it looks like the better specced option, with 256 bit Memory interface instead of the GTX 1060's 192 bit, they both have 8 Gb per second memory speed (which to me suggests that the Memory interface might not make much difference? I don't know...) and the RX 580 has a higher memory bandwidth of 256 Gb per second as opposed to 192 Gb per second.

Is anyone else reading this... better informed than me?

Getting BoS and BoM is a must considering the very cheap price they have during sales. They are like $16 each in their standard versions and $24 for their premium.
