ST_Catchov Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 I recently reread 'Sopwith Scout 7309' which details Sir Gordon Taylor's experiences during 1917 flying the Pup in 66 Squadron RFC. He begins the book reminiscing about sailing around Pittwater (an inlet north of Sydney, Aus) as a youth and exploring Lion Island, an experience I can relate to as I did the very same in Manly Juniors (a dinghy with sails basically) back in the 60's. My wingman was my grandfather who served in the AIF during WW1 from early 1917 onwards. Happy days. Taylor describes his tactics in the little Pup against the formidable Albatros D3, a far superior crate, except perhaps at heights above 17,000 feet. He went on to have an interesting and full life in aviation. It's a good read for those interested in the WW1 air war. 5 stars. I'm now very much looking forward to the release of the Sopwith 'Pup' in FC4 .... 2 1 2
Zooropa_Fly Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 Pup beats everything in a 1v1 knife fight in RoF. You can't beat the feeling of sending them Dr1 Jocks quitting with rage :)) Be interesting to see what the FC version can do.. 1
cardboard_killer Posted December 22, 2023 Posted December 22, 2023 Just finished this. I was a bit disappointed. The authors ax grinding got in the way of the last chapters, which should have been focused on the things the RFC did well on the front. Instead the last three chapters were about the attempts to divert resources into a ridiculous attempt at fielding a strategic bombing force. It seems to me that these chapters would have been better served in his sequel about the RAF in the interwar years. Still, recommended. 1

cardboard_killer Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 Returning to this series after putting it down a few years ago. 1
ST_Catchov Posted February 2, 2024 Posted February 2, 2024 You don't have to like the Stones but if you like the musical adventures and vibe of the 60's you might like this book. The author embeds himself into the Stones inner circle as they prepare for a US tour of 1969 ultimately leading to the Altamont concert. The book constantly pivots from the early 60's to the current scene (1969) with entertaining anecdotes. Light up and enjoy.
Lusekofte Posted February 3, 2024 Posted February 3, 2024 Good diary from a intelligence officer on a Wellington squadron serving in Africa , Malta and Italy 2 1 1
