Tyberan Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 (edited) I got this recently on a whim and its really well researched and written. Follows development of the engines pre-war to the end of 1945. Starts off with the schnider Trophy and the RR engines pre-runners to the merlins. Also goes into detail on the Daimler Benz v12 and probably the most detail and research into the JUMO 213 series engines. I got it for $60AUD and worth it. the Author works in F1 engine develop and said they are still using design philosophies from the WW2 engines. Edited February 11, 2021 by Tyberan

It’s not available on kindle in the States, but I have the hardback. A favorite read of mine. I have all the ORBs for 418 Sqdn but his mission chronology doesn’t match the official record. Nor can I find the details for the horrific crash and crew being burned alive unable to get out of the wreck. I’m working my way through all the Mosquito squadron ORBs.
Bremspropeller Posted February 11, 2021 Posted February 11, 2021 What's the next best thing to "Terror..."? I just finished that one. By the way: https://www.scalemates.com/de/books/focke-wulf-ta-154-luftwaffe-classics-31-dietmar-hermann--129034 I do have the german edition and it certainly is highly recomended!

Six Weeks of Blenheim Summer by Alistair Panton is a very immersive read. Also Blenheim Strike by Theo Boiten is the daddy if you are interested in RAF low-level raids. The Reich Intruders by Martin Bowman is one of his best efforts too. 1

unlikely_spider Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 (edited) The wife was good enough to buy me this book, which is pretty great so far. It's a fundamental look at the physics that dictate why a plane does what it's doing at any given time. A lot of the subjects are counter-intuitive to a beginner (though I'm not really one, at least when it comes to sims) and are explained really well. Does anyone have recommendations for a book about combat maneuvers? That is something that I don't have any structured training in. Edited February 19, 2021 by unlikely_spider

vonGraf Posted February 19, 2021 Posted February 19, 2021 Seen in the tips here, I read Daniel Defoe's Report about the plague in London too. It had some overreligious passages but that's been normal in those times, I think. Interesting read.

Dogbert1953 Posted February 23, 2021 Posted February 23, 2021 Yes Diggun, i enjoy reading his work, along with Max Hastings. Also have it in hardback, Tesco sale for £12 a few years back. Just got around to reading it. 1

Chief_Mouser Posted March 17, 2021 Posted March 17, 2021 Tremendous account of the early days of the OS, hope it carries on in the same vein. Bet it doesn't mention me though... (29 years 'before the mast' ?).

SYN_Vander Posted March 19, 2021 Posted March 19, 2021 Ik like the story-telling style of writing. Not just a dry summery of events or specs.... 1 1

Nice - the author was on the We Have Ways podcast a few months ago and gave a really great discussion of the events down there.

Monostripezebra Posted April 10, 2021 Posted April 10, 2021 german only.. but actually really enjoyable
co199 Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 My to-read list has gotten very long thanks to this thread! Has anyone got a recommendation for books about the IL-2? Enjoying a campaign flying it and wanted to learn more outside of what's available on Wikipedia and such.
cardboard_killer Posted April 19, 2021 Posted April 19, 2021 Trying to keep one fiction and one non-fiction going at all times.
Rokychuchi Posted April 21, 2021 Posted April 21, 2021 I'm surprised by a quantity of stupid deaths, not directly related to air combat. A Bf-109's gear during the take off collides with a roof of a truck that was somehow crossing the takeoff lane in that very moment, Bf-109 crushes and pilot dies... In Il-2 for that I would be thinking of a poor mission design... 2
