Johnny, take your time and go slow. I am a beginner, it has been four months since I bought IL-2 and I could not be more satisfied.
I broke lots of planes on take off, I did spin on landings, but that is it. It is the start.
First times I just played around with Quick Missions, attacking slow bombers with no guns at all, using icons to help see where they are. And that was cool.
It took me several weeks to get courage to face a Bf 109 in a dog fight. I have been flying with the russians airplanes, I like the I-16.
Some times I just took an airplane and flew around just enjoying the scenario. The Kuban module is the one I Iike the most, with mountains, ocean, small villages and plantations.
Then I tried a Career with fast progression, everything on easy. I managed to end the Moscow battle and moved with the same pilot to the Stalingrad campaign. In a mission he got shot down and killed and I decided to let him go. It was an emotional moment. That career is still there, I did not delete the profile.
Then I decided to get rid off icons (object markers), even asked for more subtle icons to help in the immersion. I did end up studying the format of the airplanes to learn to identify them. And it worked.
Then I decided to learn engine management to defy myself and even enhance the immersion. And it worked.

To fast forward, right now I am in a career in the Kuban battle, everything on hard, and with "Iron Man" selected, that means, if I die there is no cancel. It is some kind of "permadeath". Each flight is tremendous. The feeling is intense!!!
To summarize, every time I put some effort in the game it gives back in enjoyment. Those leaps of immersion and excitement keep coming and I am overwhelmed, but by pleasure.
I am attaching and image of my controls. I put it as my desktop wallpaper so I could memorize everything. I hope it can help.

PS: I fly in VR and I would recommend it to anyone. I played other games in VR, and there is some good titles, but not much, and I could say that IL-2 Sturmovik is maybe the best VR title out there.

A Microsoft Sidewinder Precision 2.

I remember playing freaking Jane's WW2 Fighters with that thing. It died a year ago.

When confronted with the total study material for commercial pilots written exams (enough files seemingly to fill a decent sized car) I looked a bit shocked and stunned.. My lecturer asked

: how do you eat an elephant?

: one mouthful at a time...

?

Cheers, Dakpilot

A small step forward is better than standing still.

@JohnnyCarr Welcome to the forum, you came to the right place to be helped.

I know how much it is frustrating at the beginning, but, trust me your satisfaction will be unforgettable!

I do not know if it has been said, but make sure to modify the sensibility on your axis, it helps a lot, see https://youtu.be/_z7bk3ChYjE

Also this issue reminds me how much a simple aircraft to start is needed, so the Po2 will be handy for new pilots so they can gain confidence to go to more advanced ones.

I see you are living on BC... I might do my professional flight training in this province (I am currently living in France)

I've posted this before for someone who has CH products, I had them for 15 years before I moved over to the Warthog.... the pdf on assignments can be edited to however you have yours set up.  you will need the latest CH Manager to use the dummies guide, but CH has it for you.

@4driano I am amazed that you can use a keyboard while using VR.I too used to own that joystick.I have started a career also.I had to look for it as it's not available in offline mode and I hadn't yet opened the sim in online mode.

@Dakpilot I was born in Rhodesia and have never eaten an elephant but I do understand what you're saying ;)

@1./TG1_Nil I am 1/2 hour drive from Vancouver. If you do come to BC and end up in the lower mainland I will buy you lunch :).I watched the video you posted.I am still making adjustments to the settings  as I improve and I have noticed a huge difference with aiming weapons and not bouncing all over.

@19//Hoss I did manage to get CH manager installed and calibrate my equipment but do need help understanding what else I can do with it.Thank you for the links.I will bookmark them.

I tried mapping macros commands/keystrokes with both CH manager and joytokey but so far haven't got anything to work yet.I would really like to get the 3Dmigoto zoom working with a CH controller.

For someone who has had computers for 22 years I still struggle with the most basic of tasks at times.I spent several hours yesterday just trying to get jsgme mod installer to work and install the NoRadioNoise English mod.I actually only just got it working this morning.Yes I can read instructions but I don't always understand what they say lmao.Hats off to the developers of that mod.

Not that we have the biggest amount of controls as the core ones don't add up to that many but a search for comand would be nice.

@JohnnyCarr I found the quick manual made by @Myscion very useful. In Adobe Reader I added another text box with the main controls for the planes I wanted to fly and then printed out double-sided.

Recently I bought a Logitech G13 gameboard and intend to use that in place of my keyboard. Next step is to make sticky labels to place over the keys: no way I'm remembering what all the G1-G23 keys do!

As others have said, stick to one plane to begin with. I picked the Yak-1, which is a bit nippier than the LaGG-3 and is pretty fun and effective to fly in combat. In the quick mission scenario, pick the lone plane on the map, start on the runway and then reduce your fuel down to 50%-60% and strip the armaments (pick Aerobatics) so the plane is more responsive. Then go do some loops, rolls, mess with the engine settings and try to land. It might help to press Ctrl+R (default key) to record your flight and play it back later via the main menu.

Don't forget to take a break when it feels like work and not fun ;)

Once you are ready to get online and do some multiplayer make sure you install Team Speak and get on Battle Of Stalingrad TS

It's more fun flying on line if you have someone to talk to, cover your six and blow shit up with.................
