50. cal tracer smoke

Just a quick question, why don’t the 50. Cals produce a smoke trail like 20mm or the early German mg’s, couldn’t it be possible to add a bit of smoke, a tad, a smidge? just wondering.

I was always wondering why the guns had such huge smoke trails. In the US Army I worked with the M2 .50 a lot and never saw smoke. Apparently other countries had actual smoke tracers that leave a huge smoke trail.

is it because of the condensation the bullets produce in different climates and altitudes? or maybe these are different planes from other countries and a different time? i dont know if the video helps @BorysVorobyov

It could be related to the tracer compound used. Less pure stuff might burn with more smoke?

Some of the other countries guns or cannons used smoke trail tracers, but I am not sure if the US planes used them or not. Personally I would rather not have smoke trail tracers as with the FW190 the 4 cannon and 2 mg make such a thick "smoke screen" from the tracers that the target gets obscured.

I've always thought that the round in this game had way too much smoke, I don't mind a little bit but it seems overdone in this.

No tracer option would be great...

These could be done with mods.

Some of the guns have no tracers by default. The 20 mm cannons on the MiG and the AP only belts on the LA 5 for example.

It's the design of the tracers. The American .50s don't leave smoke because of the compound. Early British .303 rounds left smoke (because of the phosphorous in the tracer that exited out a hole in the side of the bullet AFAIK) but they switched later in the war to not leave smoke.

MG-FF tracers left smoke for sure, not sure if the MG17 tracers did or not IRL. I was doing some research on this for CloD but I could only really find a definitive answer for the .303 British rounds.

I love all your knowledge but what has just popped up in my mind is there is no way the Devs are on that level of detail lol

Umm, yes they are lol. Otherwise, we wouldn't see things like tracerless ammo with the ShVAK with some of the early Soviet planes.

Hehe in old IL-2 you could see .50s from like 5k but you could have probs seeing them when firing from your cockpit...

Yeah, I like the tracers a lot better in this game than old Il-2, I have a lot better time walking my fire (my gunnery is...not the best). D:
