MadTommy Posted January 15, 2014 Posted January 15, 2014 (edited) Hello, I'm curious to understand what new things BoS brings to the combat flight community, and hope you can enlighten me. (apart from the location /scenario of Stalingrad itself) I presently have RoF, CloD and all the DCS modules. TBH I don't have the time to fly these 3 as is. But I've had them all from release date so the prospect of a new flight sim is very appealing. Below is the only real info that i can see without reading these forums at great length, this is taken from the 'about' section on the site here. Being developed by 1C Game Studios comprising developers of previous Sturmovik titles and 777 Studios, the creators of Rise of Flight: The First Great Air War (the best WWI combat flight simulator ever made) Unprecedented level of detail in physics, damage modeling and aerodynamics ever represented in virtual aircraft True-to-life and complex AI system The largest and most detailed recreation of the Battle of Stalingrad theatre ever modeled in a flight simulation with unique structures, buildings and landscapes Ten Legendary aircraft that have been thoroughly re-created using original drawings and blueprints Historically correct reconstruction of all key operations of the Stalingrad battle Quick fights and large-scale battles in single-player and multi-player with dedicated servers. An extensive in-game achievement system that allows players to unlock historically based airplane modifications and upgrades as your campaign progresses. No Pay to Win here, only skill and bravery is needed! There are three things i'd love to hear more details about: Unprecedented level of detail in physics, damage modeling and aerodynamics ever represented in virtual aircraft. Unprecedented is a pretty bold claim, are there any further details about that that can flesh this out at all? Personally i'd be very happy with these to be on par with CloD & DCS...is BoS's fidelity, in these hugely important areas, really going to exceed all before it? True-to-life and complex AI system This sounds particularly exciting, as I've always found these to be the weakest areas in my present flight sims. Is there any info on these systems or feedback from users regarding AI? Historically correct reconstruction of all key operations of the Stalingrad battle Does these imply we will see full land battles going on that require our support as aviators? This is not something Iv'e seen in a flight sim and would love to hear that this is the case here in BoS. It can be done in DCS but takes hours of mission making time, to have large scale battles to interact with out of the box would would be a big selling point to me. Especially what sounds like a pretty extensive number of reconstructed operations. Any info on these areas would be greatly appreciated. Are there any other new elements that BoS brings to us that we don't see in the present stable of combat flight sims? Thanks for any info. Edited January 15, 2014 by MadTommy
I/JG27_Rollo Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 You won't have to read the entire forum at great length but if you bother reading this little 2-page thread here, you'll have a ton of info. 1
MadTommy Posted January 16, 2014 Author Posted January 16, 2014 You won't have to read the entire forum at great length but if you bother reading this little 2-page thread here, you'll have a ton of info. Fair enough, that thread only contain 46,000 words. With each update with a totally non descriptive title. Not helpful.
BeastyBaiter Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 (edited) Check the dev blogs above for detailed answers. The short answers to your questions are: 1) The physics engine is based off RoF's physics engine. It has been updated to better represent WW2 aircraft (things like compression and stick forces got added in). 2) The damage modeling is also very similar to RoF. The planes are more complex however and so there are more systems that can be damaged. This part is still very much a WiP from what I've heard. Even so, it currently matches RoF's damage modeling which is already the best in existence, far surpassing CloD or DCS. 3) The AI is something genuinely new. It will attempt to perform some actual ACM instead of doing the RoF route of just turn left, shoot face and split S endlessly if something attacks them. Like RoF there are determinations as to whether to fight or flee and to withdraw if damaged. 4) The career is simply not something that's been discussed much yet. They have said the missions will be generated server side just like the RoF beta career. As to how they will actually play out, I haven't heard a thing. I would assume they'd be sort of like RoF missions but that's purely speculation on my part. That said I think the RoF beta career is one of the best campaign generators ever made, so that doesn't bother me the least bit. Edit: As for what it brings that's new? I would say nothing. BoS isn't about breaking new ground, it's about doing it better than has been done before. If they wanted to do something new, they'd have done the Spanish civil war or the Iran/Iraq war of the 1980's. Everything else has been done a million times already. This is about giving us something like the original IL2, but with modern graphics, sounds and enormously improved physics. BoS is to IL2 what RoF is to Red Baron 3d. JtD Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 So far, early access is open and we have a 36% built. This is not sufficient to answer any of your questions with first hand experience. We, just like you, have to rely on what we've been told so far.
Sokol1 Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 2) The damage modeling is also very similar to RoF. The planes are more complex however and so there are more systems that can be damaged. This part is still very much a WiP from what I've heard. So, what mean this % from DD 41 - item 1? Sokol1
DD_Arthur Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 So, what mean this % from DD 41 - item 1? Sokol1 It means its still very much a work in progress?
Mewt Posted January 16, 2014 Posted January 16, 2014 I must say I was REALLY impressed with ROF Beta Career Mode. It was like nothing I'd seen done in a combat flight sim before. Really hoping that the BOS one is similar/even better.
dburne Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 I must say I was REALLY impressed with ROF Beta Career Mode. It was like nothing I'd seen done in a combat flight sim before. Really hoping that the BOS one is similar/even better. I thoroughly enjoy flying ROF beta career, but as stated it still is in beta - I do hope they tweak and tune it some to get it more into a final version type of career mode for BOS.
pilotpierre Posted January 17, 2014 Posted January 17, 2014 If you like RoF beta career, download Pat Wilson's Campaign Generator (PWCG), extract it into RoF folder and be prepared for the WOW factor.
