Is this still working with the latest update? Curious if the new Ammo trucks may have broken anything.

No idea.

The mod works in general. I'm sure I've seen some trucks make grander explosions than others -- but I can't prove it. Either way I really like this mod.

Game update 4.506

I was looking for a mod like this. To bad the link to download is dead. And looks like it hasn't been updated in a long time.

I have this mod on my pc still, not sure if its allowed for me to upload it though. I also assume it is missing a lot of the newer vehicles, or may be broken entirely (I don't use mods much these days)

Could you test that out and see if it's worth acquiring for Normandy vehicles. If it does work I may be interested in getting you to email me or something a copy of it

This screenshot is with the mod enabled. You can see that the cargo and fuel trucks have the tri-color pattern. When mods are disabled these vehicles are gray. The mod also repaints the Sd.Kfz. armored personnel carriers, rocket launchers and AAA halftracks; ground and rail-mounted AAA guns; field artillery pieces, search lights, ambulances and the older AI tank models. A few assets remain gray, for example the Flak 88 and the Horch staff car.

Cool, these skins are actually better than the German player skins.

What happened? I know I'm late to the party.  Thanks for our work - even though I missed it, I know what's involved with modding.

Hello,

FYI, I created a few weeks ago a mod for the camouflage of German trucks in Normandy as well as for the half tracks.

This mod introduces more variety in the camouflage, I also camouflaged the truck covers as was the case in 1944.

On the other hand, I haven't done anything for the artillery yet.

Would anyone be interested in having these skins converted into their own stand alone versions rather than overwriting/replacing the original models? I would need DetCord12B's permission to use his textures first.

It turns out to be pretty straightforward to create a variety of stand alone AI vehicle variations that can all be selected in the mission editor for use at the same time (rather than overwriting the original AI). Here is the default, a couple of mine, and a couple that DetCord12B had in his mod listed above.

Its a shame that jagdpanzer iv in the background isnt modeled and useable with an interior.

The Hetzer might be more fun, but at least I can make additional versions of the Jagdpanzer IV.

I'm getting the process more refined now. Spent some time skeletonizing Pz III and IV tracks last weekend, and built some layered templates for a couple of vehicles to make creating variations faster. Here's a mix of baseline and addon AI textures shown in the mission editor, and in game to demonstrate the sort of variety that can be created now.

The cool think about the hetzer was the roof mounted mg42 that was remote contolled from inside, ahead of its time.

Will you have these skins up for download? What's your plans?

The intention here is to create a comprehensive mod of vehicle and equipment variations to expand what's available for Mission Builders to select from.

DetCord12B has not visited the forum since 12 Nov 22. I'm seeking his permission to make these into stand alone AI vehicles. Does anyone know how to reach him?

That looks great!

I'm wondering how you made different selectable variations of them. I'm aware of the possibility to binary-edit the texture name inside the .mgm files, but that has the obvious disadvantage that you'd need to share the whole 3d model again. Is that what you did though, or did you find a better way?

Posted

I'm resharing the whole thing under new names to lessen the impact of file structure changes in some future game update.

You can reuse texture file names so you don't have to hex edit the mgm files, as the game only looks within each vehicle's folder for the matching texture. In other words, the duplicate AI vehicle will have new file names for everything except for files in the texture sub-folder, which retain their original names, but can be repainted with new images. The original AI vehicle is unaffected by the creation of the new AI vehicle and textures.

The Key Locations where files are needed to support a new AI vehicle are;

IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles
    Data
        graphics
            artillery
                (new named folder)
(New named mgm, col, and text files. The content of the text file needs to be edited with the new name.)
Textures (Modified copies of the base AI texture files with their original names.)
            vehicles
                (new named folder)
(New named mgm, col, and text files. The content of the text file needs to be edited with the new name.)
Textures (Modified copies of the base AI texture files with their original names.)
        luascripts
            sound
                vehicles (New named text file.)
            worldobjects
vehicles (New named text file. The content of the text file needs to be edited with the new name.)
                    turrets (New named text file.)

There are limits to how long the new name can be. I did a trial with the PzVIH1_Schwere_Pzr_ Abt_505_Poland_8_44 texture, and proved that you can use these very long filenames without crashing the Mission editor. Unfortunately it won't run in game unless you shorten the name to PzVIH1_8_44_Abt_505_Pillau (tested up to 27 characters). This is still long enough to make it easier to identify what skin is being selected when using these additional AI vehicles. A good rule of thumb is that if the name fits fully in the mission editor selection display field then it should work in game.

In creating the vehicle luascript file you may choose to simply reference an existing base game sound and turret filename to reduce the number of files needed for your mod. This risks a future game update changing or eliminating these files your new vehicle depends on, breaking the install of your new AI vehicle.

One additional discovery I found is that the shared textures in the common folder (e.g. Pziii wheels and tracks), can be placed directly in the new AI vehicle's texture folder, and repainted without disturbing the texture for the other vehicles that shared it. Like the base textures, no need to rename the shared files so the duplicated mgm file can still use it.

Progress on the Mission Editor UI to support these new AI vehicles.

Still hoping to get Detcord12B's permission to include the ones based on his artwork.

My matrix of new AI vehicle texture options has grown quite large at this point, but the work continues.

One thing I discovered when I put together a parade ground mission of everything I've finished so far is that having them collected together where you can see them all at once already overwhelms my system's resources. The FPS drops from 92 to 44, and it even locked up my computer once.

It won't be a problem for mission builders to use these new vehicles in moderation, but putting a couple of hundred of them in the same view is not recommended. (The same problem exists with just using the base game AI vehicles.)

Posted

Some rows still need a lot of filling in to complete the matrix.

Steady progress. Each one takes about 20-30 minutes to create and verify it's working in game now.

Fantastic work!

Finally some great camo! I was bored with the standard grey.

Thank you!

All of the artwork for the AI Expansion is done now. Only a few more things to put together for the publication packages, so I may actually be down to the proverbial "2 weeks" finally.
