Keeping the gun sight centered

Recommended Posts

So after a brief hiatus wandering Bohemia in the early 1400s, I'm back to flying.  I would really love to actually hit something.

Keeping the gun sight centered is an ongoing issue for me (I use VR and that has made it quite a bit worse).  I have the hardest time keeping my head looking through the sight.  I weaves, it bobs, it floats, and I find myself twisting my neck, scrunching my shoulders, etc.

I do have a joystick button dedicated to centering the view, but it seems to have limited effect.

Is there a way to save a head position for each plane?  Is there a way to do it in VR or do I have start the game without VR and set the head position?  Just trying to come up with a way to do this without blowing 30 minutes every time I want to fly a different plane.

Advice is appreciated.  I hope I'm not the only one that has this problem.

That is a little odd Pat, normally folks ( such as myself) find gunnery skills to improve when going to VR.

Also hard for me to imagine what you are describing by head weaving, bobbing, and floating.

Ok so here is what I do, I fly mainly the Spitfire but I do this in whatever plane.

When I first get into the cockpit,, I adjust my position then re-center ( have it assigned to a button also), to get it where I want it. For instance in the Spit by default, I find I am sitting too far back when I first get into cockpit. So what I do is move myself back a little, then hit re-center, the move myself back forward a little. And then my position is how I feel it should be,

Now the only real problem I have keeping the gunsight on target, is of course the target itself doing the weaving and bobbing. But once I get a line on it and have adjusted what I feel I should for lead, I then start firing some very short bursts adjusting again as necessary. I also try and insure I am about at convergence range.

My gunnery skills drastically improved after going VR.

You might set up some quick missions and practice, practice.

Btw there is a way to permanently set your head position, however needs to be done on monitor and not VR, I do not know the exact steps but am sure someone else will chime in to help on that. I find it quick and painless just to use the VR Re-center when first getting into cockpit.

Which button causes a new head position to be "center" in VR?  I was under the impression that that was possible only from the monitor, and had to be reset for every plane.

You should not center the sight because it is not possibe to use it with both eyes. You'll have to shift your head to put your favorite eye in front of it. But doing this will make the sight less stronger...I read a post where devs said that you'll have to close an eye to be able to aim...

From my point of view, sights are not usable by default, with is why I made my 3dmigoto VR mod to fix that: it remove the faulty fading effect and displayed it only for one eye (it also mask icons/label by cockpit frame and provide a better zoom).

Head default position are far to close to windscreen for all screen, you can modify them and save them (use keys of home, prev page,..group. and  F10 to save, but not in VR mode. I modified all default view and put them in a JSGME format, I can post it here if you want. I centered view for all BF109 and german planes with sight shifted to right, because it is more natural to use only left eye to aim (even more with my mod) and far easier to fly when centered on plane main axis.

Key to re center view if num5. F10 will make tour current position the default forward view. But it will not be saved for other sessions.

You assign a button to re-center VR in the settings menu. It and VR zoom are both in there.

It does not save it permanently though, just for that session. Next time game is launched will need to adjust head and press the assigned button again.

Also, if you open the game in 2D you can use all of the normal commands to set and save your head position for that aircraft. When you put your headset back on, it should automatically go to that position in VR.

@lefuneste

If you could post your settings that would be greatly appreciated.

Not real sure I fully understand this sentiment.

Flying the Spit, I have no trouble with the gunsight viewing with both eyes.

My view is centered in the cockpit.

I never close one eye, and I have been fairly proficient with my gunning skills.

Edit: Also experienced the same with the Yak-1 I was flying previously before the Spit Career.

This is exactly what reflex sights were designed to make unnecessary. I've used reflex sights IRL and you're meant to aim with both eyes open.

That said, me being left eye dominant but right handed has led to some...interesting...shot placements at the range, when my brain would sometimes superimpose the red dot from my right eye to the left, and subsequently cause me to aim around a meter or so to the right of the target at ~200 m.

The Soviet sights are much weaker while the Spit is excellent in VR.

I had no problem with the Yak-1 either, however so far I have only flown it and the Spit in VR.

Yeah much lower brightness and a small sweet spot for getting enough brightness.

I'm cross dominant as well. I don't find the 109 too bad to deal with using my non dominant right eye,  but for FPS (Onward) I learnt to use pistols and rifles left handed. For pistols and ironsights it makes the most difference.

In reference to bring able to use both eyes open, I can use two eyes on the Spit,  not a Yak. Curious if perhaps your physical IPD maybe makes this possible? Mind sharing it?

Also,  agreed always two eyes open even on the smaller gunsights.

I joined my modified views, you can install them with JSGME: snapviews.zip

And just an illustration of sight re inforcement:

Yeah, in games you can...not so much IRL. :P

Switching a gun to the off-hand to aim with the dominant eye is more of a hassle than learning to aim with your 'weaker' eye.

Case in point, nowadays even when using pistol iron sights, I can aim with my right eye and keep the left open while staying on target.

Yes, its hard work. Do you have VR, and have you seen what iron sights are like in VR?

I've used both reflex and iron sights in real life.

While I do have VR, I don't use it for FPS games, only flight simulations.

Give it a try. You will find FPS games vastly different when the iron and reflex sights work like the real thing.
