REQUESTED REFUND FROM STEAM... here's why..

Hi, I was an avid fan of the original iL-2 Sturmovik, while complex, it was highly configurable and the settings for all features were easy to access (not to mention much easier to read). After a few years gathering dust, I retrieved my joystick and bought iL-2 Stalingrad because of in game videos I watched and the rave reviews on all the enhancements.
OK. K.I.S.S. time. I got all my CD keys etc and was able to launch the game's main menu page. As soon as I clicked on settings however it was as if the game was crippled or broken. It was impossible to set the joystick (I would click on it and didn't even get a popup screen to let me access the settings). Almost all settings (even keyboard) were incomplete and severely.

crippled.

2 POSSIBILITIES:

1) THE GAME THAT I INSTALLED VIA STEAM SOMEHOW WAS CORRUPTED? (THE APP SIZE SHOWS 14.1GB TOTAL SIZE).

2) OR: Maybe, my hardware no longer meets the requirements to run this game?  I use an MSI Apache Pro Gaming Laptop with 12Gigs of ram, dual 8core CPUs at 2.4 to 3.0Mhz, combined/shared Graphic cards Intel HD 4600 & NVIDIA GTX 860M. All my drives are SSDs.

Depending on the reply, I may cancel the refund request (as it is still 66%OFF till April 9th). My other "old timer" now a senior observation is that it sure wasn't "Ready to play" out of the literal box.
Thanks for any guidance or assistance.

Damn

I bought it full price last week.

Worth every penny though, even though I suck so far. Just bought BoM direct from this site too.

It might help to have some screenshots so we can see exactly what you are seeing. I don't understand what you mean by "incomplete" and/or "crippled".

Check and see what video card the game used. If it used the 4600, then its no wonder it crashed out..

I'm afraid to relaunch the game now that Steam has confirmed they will refund me. I disconnected from internet and launched game's executable. I was able to play in offline mode. I got screenshots, the one showing Keyboard mapping which has only 14 mappable keys, the one for Input, (joystick) which shows only a limited view, with no settings options.

No idea what "crippled" and "incomplete" mean here. So you just went straight to settings without trying out a quick flight, then immediately requested a refund? Not sure I understand what's happening.

I suggest just jumping into quick mission first and then seeing what you might need to adjust from there. Default control settings should be just fine, joystick should work.

If you are an old timer I suggest posting a screenshot if you are still having problems with getting into quick mission and settings. Guarantee this a really simple thing to fix, don't worry!

Sounds a lot like you are aggressivly holding your payment hostage depending on what the community can do.

Two things.

One: How can you figure out if the community has solved the issue if you have lready refunded it.

Two: Why on god's green earth are you asking the community and not the trained tech support that are paied to know about issues like these?

If you're an old timer, don't worry about disconnecting from the internet or anything- just press F12 for steam screenshot and let us see what the problem is. You've already launched the game before anyway, that won't matter.

Guarantee this is a simple thing so hold in there! Did you try a quick mission or flight at all?

This may not be applicable... but check it out.

Screenshots uploaded.

The game didn't crash and I made sure it was set to use the NVIDIA GTX 860M
I did manage to launch a Quick Mission but there were no prompts. The plane was unflyable due to settings all wrong. I got and undersized FOV, no throttle control, autocamera was in cinema mode, etc...Since I had been unable to set my keypad settings and the game seemed to want to use the mouse for controls. Basically if you look at 2 of the 3 screenshots they show minimal to totally missing advanced settings.

The key mapping is distributed in several tabs (in the top), those 14 settings are only the first tab. Click the other tabs to set everything else. Joystick axis and buttons are assigned in those same pages too.

There's nothing wrong with anything in those screenshots.

Nothing crippled whatsoever.

Just double click the assignable box for throttle under 'engine' tab on key mappings and it will let you assign your throttle correctly.

Good luck

Having problems with "Quotes" so I am addressing your messages merged when necessary.

I am not holding anyone hostage here. The game remains on sale 66% off till April 9th, as well, it will take up to 14 days to get my refund, so I could cancel it. You can simply choose not to reply. ;)

I guess the gist of my question comes down to missing the ability to customize all the game's settings.
I just thought that someone might have seen this before and know why the problem of missing Menu settings Interface.

I don't use a Gamepad and it is always disabled on Steam and ingame for any games that insist on enabling it.

I will switch to going to Steam Support and find out what the issue is through their forum.

Thanks to all who responded. :)

Your Rig isn't the Problem, it's adequate and better than mine. I'm running i7 with 2.2 to 3.2GHz, GTX850M and 8GB RAM with HDD.

And I have no Problem with T16000M and Saitek Throttle Quadrant.

Your Screenshots Cut off the Upper and Lower End, so maybe you can't even see the Control Options Tabs. Are you running the Wrong Resolution? Try Windowed Mode on Low Resolution to find your way around and set up properly.

Are you just not seeing the upper and lower half of the Client? 16:9 vs 4:3 vs Super Wide Screen maybe?

You have all been more help than some of you realize. I believe that my keyboard settings page has a Tabs menu for other keys that my video settings might be obscuring.

I'll absorb all this, send Steam Support Forum a summary of the problems I have. As for some who are saying there is nothing wrong? Let me just stay that I never experienced all these non-intuitive problems in the original iL-2 Sturmovik interface.

Feel free to close this. If/when I resolve it I'll write back in.
Thanks everyone.

You're so almost there now, so keep at it, champ!

Find the appropriate assignable blank box next to the function you want in key mappings, ie. Throttle, under 'engine' tab, and double click that box. It will tell you to move the axis and then assign it. Don't forget to press the green accept. Repeat for anything else you want to change.

Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes.

Change resolutions if the screen is not fitting.

Looks like you've given up here already now- so God bless you and all the best ,sir!

You are 100% right, I believe that is the source of all this headache. I think it will be my ultimate solution.
I was just starting to think myself. Nice to hear confirmation. That would certainly fix it.
I'll have another go at it and maybe do a file integrity check or renstall it from scratch.

Thanks again.

No need to a file integrity check, reinstall or any of that lark- everything is fine, just change your screen resolution, which is under the in game video settings.

Glad nobody is being held hostage!

Well, it's that thing I do where I actually read and comprehend what People are writing. Reading Comperehension apparently isn't a common Skill even among the Native Speakers (which I'm not).

People are astonishingly unhelpful.

TO:

6./ZG26_Klaus_Mann I couldn't reply to you for some reason.

A picture is worth 1.000 words, we now seem to have a consensus that the game's video resolution was/is the cause of my problems.
Your screenshot menu is what I couldn't find. But, thanks to all who contributed.
(STEAM will be so happy when I cancel the REFUND request.

The next time I post here I'm sure it will all be positive. Looks like I have a little "Tweaking" (my former alias) to do.

thank you all! :P

In conclusion; I re-purchased the iL-2 BoS deluxe which was still on sale at 66%off.
All my problems were video related and I should add 1 more key tip that made solving this even easier.

My laptop screen is only 17". I ultimately went back to using my laptop's display to set my resolution to full screen 1920x1080p.

Because I have vision difficulties I use Windows 7 DPI display setting. This was key to the problem. I had it set to "oversized" 150%.
When I reduced it to 125% I was finally able to see full menus and run full screen.
The key was to go to the game's executable and right click, select "Compatibility" and check off "Disable scaling on high DPI settings". Once I did that, the video displays were working flawlessly and nothing was hidden. I was even able to run it properly on my 40" HDTV (which can be a headache to setup at times.)

I'm determined to play this game, now all I have to do is find fixes for things like key bindings not saving or working at all.

NO I'm not looking for help on that, I already have found many others with that issue and patience and a learning curve will eventually have me "flying high". (tongue in cheek). :o::wacko:
