SYN_Luftwaffles Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Question in title. I'm playing career with dense activity on ultra, but if it's unrealistic to see so far, then I'd like to turn it down some.
71st_AH_Mastiff Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 it was 20k of haze, now it's up to 150k of horizon.
Dakpilot Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 I understood that pre 3.001 it was 40 km ( i think this was said by Jason, just cannot remember where he said it) Cheers, Dakpilot
BeastyBaiter Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 (edited) I thought it was 10km, hence why flying at 7km resulted a nearly invisible earth except more or less straight down. Edited March 24, 2018 by BeastyBaiter

JG4_Sputnik Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 The new horizon is amazing. However it should (?) alter with the weather, no? It stays like this even on cloudy/hazy days. No big deal for me but the weather is suppose to change the visibility as well.
216th_Jordan Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Weather does change visibility. I just don't know to what extent. When I look outside of my window I can see quite a bit of 'haze' on sunny days and seeing beyond 70km is rather seldom.
Blackhawk_FR Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 (edited) It's quite rare to have more than 100km visibility IRL. It depends on the area and weather. Also, something that often happens is the inversion layer (humidity and pollution particles are stucked at low altitude): https://www.google.fr/search?q=inversion+layer&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwin666hhoXaAhWJWBQKHSjeAO8Q_AUICigB&biw=1680&bih=919#imgrc=clNqXl36gSHF1M: You can have a medium, poor or very poor visibility under that layer (often around 1 - 1,5k), and almost unlimited vis over. It happens under anticyclone conditions. Edited March 24, 2018 by F/JG300_Faucon
Wolf8312 Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Whats the effect on performance of DD is it significant?
Wedgewood Posted March 24, 2018 Posted March 24, 2018 Also, in general you'll see much further on cold days than on warmer ones due to atmospheric conditions. Where I live we have a small mountain range about 81kms from the coast. In the winter they are fully visible with only a little bit of contrast removed and in the summer they can rarely be seen and when they can be seen they have lost most of their contrast and the details are washed out.

I was very conservative with the draw distance and tried to tweak other settings to get best frame rate. Then I threw caution to the wind and set it to the max just to see what would happen to my frame rate. Almost no difference. And that was coming off of days of stutter issues.
A_radek Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Chiliwili performed a proper test on this. VR, so consider everything is drawn twice here.
StickMan Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Would 76yrs less pollution help visibility? 150 km visibility may have been the norm back then.
216th_Jordan Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 I find the 100km draw distance setting to be the best setting for nice visuals and quite good Performance. As draw distance affects cloud render range this has a rather large impact on my system.
ZachariasX Posted March 25, 2018 Posted March 25, 2018 Weather and resulting athmosphere should affect draw distance. In dry weather you should well be able to see 200 km from 3 km up. But this is rather extreme. Western European weather often has visibilty below 20 km distance. And this is not because of clouds, but „less transparent“ air caused by humidity. Weather should not only mean clouds, but it should also move you visibility slider. 1
