The effect is there, and its pretty dramatic. There is an explosion inside the wing. Ive seen it about ~6 times in a few hundred hours so its rare.

3 of the planes were IL2's, two others Russian fighters and 1 FW190 that I can recall.

 

One of the Il2's I attacked tried a last second diving evasive maneuver to avoid my shot and a single round hit the underside of the wing right where the VYa23mm cannon would be. BOOM!

Roblex mentioned in another thread that the G4 had 20mm gunpods

 

If you watch in HD and slow mo you can see them, 151/20 gunpods have 135 rounds when full

The 20mm Nosearmement is fed from a ammo storage in the wingroots. And the explosion could be triggered by the gunpods. Like the other guys already said.
