The A.I. still does it :(

I've noticed on the new career mode when I fly bomber intercepts, that if I attack a bomber, then it drops bombs and heads for for home, not just him, but the other two bombers in his flight. 

 

The rest of the formation carries on, unless they are also hit.

I think that falls in with my observations.  It looks like you hit the leader.  The wingmen seem to prioritize sticking with the leader over other considerations.  So healthy wingmen turn around and dump if the leader dumps.  Damaged wingmen stick around if the leader is undamaged and continuing the mission.  Ideally, if the leader of a bombing flight goes down or RTBs then the others should carry on.  That might be difficult for 1C to do given the constraints of the Formation and other MCUs. 

 

The behavior is understandable if you look at the mission structure.  Only the id of the leader is used to bind the flight to the mission MCUs.  The wingmen are all bound to the leader via their linkage entity.  The Formation MCU gives the command to stick to the leader.  Should the leader be lost the others get confused as their planes are not linked to the mission MCUs.  There does not appear to be a way to break that binding and designate a new leader should the original go down or be damaged.

As a work around you can make the leader invincible. Then you always have someone the AI can follow.

That almost cost me my Iron Man mode career in my Fw190 just 5min ago, I so hoped that that AI behavior was a thing of the past... if damage < 50% then "fly home". No?

Are you sure you weren't  mistakenly flying on WoL?

I can confirm all the nasty AI behaviour.

 

AI still chased the player back to base, untill the AI gets shoot down by own Flak

AI Bombers can´t managed to stay in Formation. It´s all over the place. I have tested only A-20/Ju-88..very frustrating

AI still stays in fights, no matter if he´s smoking or fuel leaking or half dead

AI Planes, mostly Bf-109 still crashes into ground many times.

AI still turns in endless circles if get chased by player & AI

AI still cant pull enough lead if fired at opponents. This affects all planes.

AI still fights in the horizontal most of the time. Vertical maneuvers are very rare.

Yeap, AI can't fly in formation.

 

AI 109's will laen dart if planes are damaged and diving or rookie.  They will also turn fight in 109's but Veteran AI will vertical fight and can be quite good at it.

 

AI might have a problem pioritising AA but in ground missions I make it my mission to take out at least small AA for my flight.  This helps keep them alive and me too.

 

AI don't do well with pairing and Wingman fighting.  Also not so great on different formations but they have flown line astern and then echelon right

 

Would be nice to see AI develop more with pairs and 3's (early VVS tactics).

 

Still, AI will evade as a formation when attacked by fighters and then reform on the flight leader when danger is over.

@blitze try the A-20 in the career. Kuban map. This looks kinda funny. 8 from 9 AI Bombers are waving in opposite directions as they approach the 2nd waypoint,heading to target. The same on their way back to base....

Yeah, formations are not the AI's strong point or hierarchical leadership.

Had an incident that a tester ought to look at, my IL-2 flight had a fighter flight (our escorts?) spawn on the runway in the same space as us, clipping through our aircraft, and causing a massive crash.

Think the ground loops on  take offs have been reported as well, but have an example here from an A5 career's first flight:
