Guide to replace the AI skins in career mode

Hello Pilots.

This will be a guide to replace the default AI skins in career mode. by now, It does only change the look of the players squadron with a custom skin of your choice. It does NOT add specific skins to each individual plane in your flight. As far as I know, this could be only done by the Dev.

Thanks to

Mitthrawnuruodo

He wrote a small guide in this thread: (you need to scroll down a bit)

Unfortunately, this doesen´t seem to work for me at the moment, and I dont know why.

As an example,I try to replace the default skins in a Mig-3 career with a dummie skin. You can download it in the thread above.

Per instruction,I keep the file structure: your mod name \ data\graphics\planes\mig3s24\textures\mig3s24.dds

If the player now enable the mod. (in JSGME and ingame option ticked), put the Mig in a quick mission and choose the first default skin it shows as expected, the already enabled mod skin. Try this now in the career mode. I cant get it to work.

I will change the OP if we have a solution for this.

So,any help is appreciated here. I attach a few screens: The JSGME file structure, the enabled mod structure itself und how it looks ingame. Hope this helps.

In Pat's campaign (PWCG) I can choose any custom skin in my skins folder, and allocate my whole squadron with individual skins.

The only time I have to allocate another skin is if a new pilot arrives at the squadron to replace a casualty. Once allocated, that pilot will have that skin until he is killed.

I'm not sure how Pat's campaign system allows us to do this, but I wish we could do it in the new Dev campaign too...

I just created a new career to check, and if you replace the default skins, e.g., by using one of the mod packages I posted here:

then  the new default skins do show up in career missions, at least ones where they game is using the default skins (as my test mission was - if they've coded the career mode to use specific squadron skins where available, then of course replacing the default skins wouldn't have any effect on those squadron-specific skins).

Yeah, the test mod I made only replaces one default skin. Therefore, if a mission is designed to use a different skin, it won't won't show. However, it is possible to replace the other skins (they just go in a different folder).

Exacto! This is what I know now. I have to re-name my custom skin to match their ingame counterparts!

lets stay with my example, the Mig-3 : Ingame default summer skin = mig3s24.dds

Ingame default winter skin = mig3s24_01.dds

Now it works!

I do modding at all my games (and the classic IL2 too) for over 12 Years now, but this here with Il-2 is really back to the very basics. We all have to start from scratch now. Exciting days are comming.

Ah yes. The dreaded Lime Squadron. They were said to sting their enemies with the dreaded "Citrus In Your Eyes" strike!

Poor bastards didn't see 'em coming.
