Career mode: Some improvement suggestion

I would like to have another option to reduce enemy activity if its possible since my PC cant handle it.

I dont know exactly what is causing the slowdowns above target area (more planes or ground units. Probably ground units).

I just had mission in Moscow map 6 Bf109F4 with approx. 8 Ju88 and everything was smooth. At the target area we were attacked by approx 4 P40 and 2 Migs and even if I had 60fps the game was in slow motion so I could refill my glass of wine in a turn

AI definitely has to learn how to fly german fighters. It doesn't make sense, that they fly them like russian aircrafts, they are not made for this kind of flying. It is always the same, when I fly german fighter career, one day of combat and almost the whole squadron is lost. I end up flying each day with new squadmates.

An option to be able to reduce activity if needed would definitely be nice, tweak it to one's system capabilities.

I think the front line density reduces the amount of activity, not sure though as I always keep mine on the highest setting.

I will have to take a look at that, thanks.

I would like an option to assign a default skin ( even by plane type of the squadron if possible ) for the career avoiding to re-select the same skin each time before launching a mission.

I would like the possibility to add a small custom photo of our girlfriend in black and white in the cockpit

Hi,

I had that happening when I tried DENSE front settings, never saw this with MEDIUM or SCATTERED settings. My guess is, that the increase in ground unit activity and the associated calculations for tracking and handling them is incredibly CPU intense. Further it seems to me that these calculations are mostly non-multithreaded, at least that is what my Logitech ARX contol tool tells me. Very often only one core of my quadcore I7 2600 (sandybridge) is busy and in case of DENSE settings that one is really spiking.

Maybe they can solve this by changing the AI unit code to be more multithreaded programmed in the future?

Bomber escort mission ... After taking a hit from light AAA I had to hastily retreat back home with engine damage, but I kept on the radio to listen to my squadmates. I was wondering what took them so long ... Does the player really have to wait until the bombers landed at the base? If so wouldn't it be more realistic to have them "wave goodbye" to the fighter escort at a pre-defined point (i.e. with a flare of a certain colour)?

They don't have to land, but have to reach pretty much their base. They will peel off and you will get a message and then the icon for your landing area ( if icons on).

Finally have some free time to try out the career mode!

A quick question for you guys, do you guys try to stay in formation as a wingman? my 1st 109 mission was to attack a transport column passing a bridge with a flight of 5(I'm #5). The objective area was heavily covered by AA, and my entire flight seemed to enjoy going redneck mode, flying low and slow over the targets. I've restarted that mission a few times and there was just no way I won't get killed by AA. Eventually, I figured that the best approach to that was to break formation, use the flight as a AA bait, and perform rapid one pass attack while they were getting focused by the AA. It worked well, but I find that it defeats the purpose of flying in career mode. Am I missing something here?

Suggestion for the  Luftwaffe campaigns:

Replace any "patrol" or "protect ground troops" mission with a "Free Hunt" - that was the usual modus operandi for german fighter units. Secondly I'd strictly limit the ground-attack missions since very rarely german fighter units even had the technical equipment to mount bombs on their aircraft (I only know of certain Staffeln within JG 51 having aircraft configured for the Jabo role).

I've passed this message along to @=FB=VikS.

Thanks Luke. I am still debating whether or not to suggest removing the Bf 109 F-4 from Moscow campaigns because the way we "hop" in between different aircraft. These were not that numerous, anyway (yet, that is) and only having Bf 109 F-2s for the fighter units makes more sense. The two Gruppen that did operate only F-4s in 1941 (III./JG 52 and III./JG 77) were engaged in different areas, anyway.

As for "Free Hunt" ... That would require a bit of different thinking to be realistic. It's not as simple as "Protect Ground Troops, have enemy Ground-Attack Aircraft spawn, intercept", it would leave much more freedom to the formation leader to choose what exactly to do. It could mean staying on "our" side of the front and looking for trouble there or it could mean flying deep into the soviet hinterland and try to catch some unwary soviet pilots trying to take-off or land from/at their air bases. One may have to define a rather large geographical area to "patrol" (in-game logic) and have two or three "Mission Accomplished" criteria to use - either a timer set to a rather long timeframe (more than 30 minutes or so) with a built-in cut-off should the flight reach a certain fuel or ammunition level. But I am not yet totally sure how to do this so please take this as me rambling somewhat incoherently. ;)

Thor that is very possible, but a lot of logic has to be placed because you don't know where the player will be.

For Bodenplatte I'm going to design an extensive free-hunt map/mission with lots of random generation.

It's time consuming but doable - a lot to ask from a generated mission though.

Best make it a free hunt in a give sector.

I agree. But I was more leaning towards giving the player a larger area than the current "patrol" setting to play with, but still within a certain sector. And we should remember that not every mission must result in air combat - if the player's flight happens to be in another area of the "Free Hunt" sector while the VVS strikes that could be seen as "tough luck" or - as I have already seen in a generated mission - with a location update (i.e. "Ground Observers report enemy aircraft in sector XYZ" on-screen message).

I miss the feature in ROF when you get all the details about the plane(s) you have shot down: nationality, plane model and even pilots name.

Can that be implemented here?

Thanks

I'm not too worried about Career mode being neglected. This is the very first release of it, and obviously the devs plan to expand and refine it in the future.

I do echo some of the other requests, though. Backgrounds and names for Italian pilots is certainly a must, as is the "null airfield" problem. Beyond that, it seems that the crux of the issues that most are having with the mode currently comes down to flaws in how the AI works for both friendly and enemy pilots, and I imagine that's something of a hurdle to improve.

I would prioritize collision avoidance for the AI, mainly to avoid making dogfights trivial or to prevent losing wingmen on take-off. Beyond that, proper formations (if they're not already present) would come next.

Not sure if it's been suggested but I would love the ability to choose what plane to use when units have multiple planes assigned to them.

You already can do that once you have reached the rank of squadron commander.

I did a search in case someone else already raised the idea but didn't find anything. I was thinking that the whole career aspect is a huge improvement to the game and it would be nice if it was possible to be able to play a career in co-op mode with friends taking other positions on your squadron or perhaps if a bomber squadron then positions on a single aircraft. Particularly thinking forward to future expansions like Bodenplatte and tanks where you might eventually see aircraft like B17s or where crewing a tank with multiple players might be possible. I guess I was thinking back to DCG co-operative campaigns in the old IL2 and how much fun they were and how much better they would be when encapsulated by the new career system. Just a passing thought in any case and I realise that the career mode is aimed at SP really.
