Planes blinking in and out existence (Update 3.0) - (Fixed in 3.002))

Posted (edited)

This is now fixed as of version 3.002

First I'd just like to say thanks for hard work on update 3.0

Is anyone else having planes flickering in and out of view when in large groups? For example in escort the bombers missions where a large cluster of planes are together some of them disappear only to reappear depending on the view. It tends to happen more with distance, note they they are definitely in range as planes that are closer in the formation will disappear and I can see planes further ahead in the same formation.

Its incredibly immersion breaking and as much as I hate to say it... borderline game breaking. It makes me not trust the game at all...I mean how am I supposed to know if enemy planes are there or not now Ive started noticing planes disappearing and reappearing.

Its almost like the game engine is exceeding the maximum amount of planes that can be rendered and its turning some off.

This was while playing single player campaign while flying the spitfire on Kuban map. Front line activity set to dense and graphics set to ultra.

Its a real shame as I just bought BOK and what with the new features of the patch I was super excited to play but this is ruining my other wise excellent experience :-(

Specs are i7 4770k @ 4ghz
16 gb ram
GTX 1080
Running on SSD
Win10
All drivers and updates are latest.

I just recorded a track to see if it happens in replays too and it does. Interestingly in the track player you can see that the markers do indeed show planes disappearing that are well within 10km.

Excuse the potato quality it was quickly recorded on my phone. The zoom is me adjusting FOV.

Can confirm this happens in MP as well. It was also around this same distance 3-5km.

Do you remember what aircraft type was disappearing? Please upload the track as well.

Hmmm I think it was the A-20B.

Here is the track, I had to rar it up due to file size.

p.s WOW I had no idea tracks were so huge in file size!

Thanks, this is a problem with the particular plane (A-20B), should be fixed early next week.

Thanks Sneaksie :salute:

I'm super happy I can continue playing knowing I'm not going to get jumped by cloaking fighters

I'll just add that it happens also when there is only 3 planes (player vs, 2 ai A-20s) and sometimes even when they are rather close (within 1-2 km).

Also happens with the La5FN in quick missions (although not as regularly as with the A20)

I described the same problem here, happens in MP and SP:

This is not a new issue isolated to this plane as it has been happening for a while (several months that I have been playing) and I have been making mention of this on the Wings of Liberty thread of disappearing planes for both the Germans and the Russians.

At times the fighters will disappear for up to 15 or more seconds.

Distances are normally in the mid range i.e. 5k+

It is not only a problem with the A-20B as Fat_Boy_Bear says... and I suspect that is something related with the interactions of the planes with the clouds.
If you set up a quick mission like this just to have lots of clouds and place yourself and the other planes above like this...

Spoiler

Then you move your plane to make the enemy formation make contrast against the sky and against the clouds.

When the clouds are behind the planes, there is not 3D model to look for, it has disappeared.

@LF_VictoriSV although I think your issue is legit, I think it is a different bug than that which is being described here. I think there is another thread for the bug you are seeing

Hi =SqSq=switch201,

You may be right that it requires a new thread, though possibly not as my experience is different and has often (but not always) not involved clouds.

One instance I had with a Yak 1b disappearing for over 15 seconds was when I was under the cloud base (not skimming it) and the Yak was about 1k altitude and was approximately 4k away. It was one of two aircraft and I cannot say if the other aircraft disappeared as I was intent on seeing how long the aircraft would be gone for etc.

@LF_VictoriSV

I've seen a post about this somewhere but I can't seem to find it now...think i may have seen it on the steam forums.

It is an issue but is definitely a different bug to the one I reported about the planes flickering.

The issue you are describing looks something to do with the game not rendering the clouds in at the correct depth. I'm guessing the clouds are some very fancy volumetric effects that aren't rendered to the z-buffer in the same way that geometry is and they are being rendered over the top of the planes at a certain z depth.

I don't know if it's the same bug or not, but I know it produces the same effect, not seeing other planes when you should be because they just vanish.

Moreover, I don't want to create another post of a very similar issue, that we (or at least I) are not sure about the exact cause (that's the developers work), their origins might be the same, but we don't know.

I believe that there are two bugs here...

Last night I saw a A-20 plane disappear when I was at about 3k and below the cloud level and the A-20 was at around 1k. When I zoomed out to about 80% the A-20 would disappear and re-appear when I zoomed back in. Unfortunately there were no other planes in the location of the A-20 to confirm if it was an A-20 only issue.

Yep. I noticed that too, A20 in my case.
