New career mode - Explanation please

Recommended Posts

Sorry to ask this, but before starting a career I have a few questions you might be able to answer:

- Is it dead is dead ? (I have to start over a new career once my character dies)

- If it is dead is dead, is there a rookie way to circumvent this? (I know, I know but I´m a bloody beginner)

- What exactly is this iron man mode?

- Is there character progression with vulnerability off ?

- Can I take over my character from Moskov to Stalingrad to Kuban and develop him further and further?

Thanks for answering my noob questions.

If you tick the Iron Man checkbox, yes

Don't tick the box. :)

Funny you should ask, because some of us Testers were confused. But here's what the smart guys were telling us not so smart guys.

If you tick the Ironman box, then Dead is Dead. I never ticked that box and never died. I spent multiple trips in hospital...oh bugger LukeFF beat me to it.

Adding to the above, if you leave the "iron man" box unchecked, you can restart a mission if you don't like the results. So yes, you can continue if your pilot dies by simply replaying the mission and not dying. If you check "iron man" though, it's different. Then you cannot repeat any mission and so if your character is killed, you have to start over.

Thanks folks,

that answers all my questions. Now I really need my skills trained for the iron man settings. What I saw so far in the new career mode is very beautiful. It really ads to the immersion and helps to identify with your alter ego. I like it a lot. :-)

I even reminded me a little of the Red Baron career which was my starting point with PC games decades ago.

Remember the QuickMission setup screen from Red Baron: "There I was in my [insert plane] when I met [insert plane] over [insert place]."

The new career makes me wish for an easy and quick switch from 2D to VR. The map and base screens are much better on a regular screen, while the flying I rather do in VR.

VR is still beautiful though even on balanced settings. Did a sortie on a moscow career. Early morning autumn map heading off with the sun rising a few degrees off the horizon on my 2 o clock. As we were climbing I could see the morning mist covering some low laying areas of land off in the distance. I was in awe, just soaking up the scene.

No doubt the image would be far more beautiful on my 4k screen, but I wonder if it would be as memorable.

In VR, going through the clouds and seeing splotches of moisture building up. Wow. Amazing.

I'm just getting back into IL2, have Stalingrad, Moscow and Kuban - is the career mode a dynamic campaign or are the missions scripted? Don't really have a good handle on what the new campaign offers..?

Really enjoying the whole career setup. Option to start as flight leader or having to earn it seems to be nice.

Noticed that both difficulty and frontline density add a lot. For one there's a lot going on with Frontline in Dense. There's other squadrons doing their thing and it is hard to "stay on target" but fairly obvious to overcome that fence.

As an example, my flight orders were to provide close support to ground forces and intercept any ground pounders. On the way there we did see several Axis squadrons engaged with the high cover and some ground attackers being engaged by another squadron alas not in our designated sector.

The urge was to go after them but that wasn't our mission. So kept a cool head and stayed with the flight. Eventually a swarm of fighter bombers did show up in our designated area although not exactly at the predicted altitude, they were a bit higher.

Al this to say that there's some added "life" to the campaign where other squadron's lives are simulated and one effectively can feel the hot areas being really hot.

Career missions are generated server side with each new day I think. It's not dynamic in the sense that you can change the strategic layer of the campaign, but you should feel like you are part of the squadron, with squadmates living, dieing, getting captured, or transferred around you. New replacements coming in etc. With time and performance your rank will increase, and eventually you may get command of your squad, allowing you to micro manage aircraft assignments, loadouts, pilots, etc

That would explain why stepping through all the screens in career mode is so painful as they take quite a long time to load.   Hopefully this improves in the coming days.

There is a lot of interesting information to be found under the different tabs. Seeing the front move, seeing how many airplanes are in service, but as you say there are no instantaneous mission results.

That's more than suitable, I look forward to getting a little deeper into it then. Thanks for the info.

Questions about the new career mode. Are squadron aircraft inventories tracked? Can a squadron be wiped out or depleted because they ran out of planes/pilots? As a battle progresses will we see less enemy or friendly planes in the sky if one side is clearly winning?

It’s great that they included the “Iron Man” option. Playing “Dead is Dead” really enforces a reality on you that makes a sim a SIM

Everything about air combat suddenly makes sense. I really liked that aspect about Desastersoft.

Unit inventories are tracked. Click on the Unit HQ tab and scroll down. You'll see current aircraft status at the very bottom. In the Planning Tab buried amongst the lines of text where Boris Badinoff was award XXX you will see pilots transfer into and away from your unit. And you'll see new replacement aircraft arrive.

edit: The sim is NOT dynamic in the ability to lose all assigned pilots or airplanes, but staffing will decrease and new pilots/airplanes will arrive.

I gave a Bf-109F2 career a try starting at the very beginning (Moscow) and can say from experience what happens when your squad runs out of planes/pilots. On the very first mission, my flight of 6 had to escort bombers. We got mauled by MiG-3's, only 2 made it back including me with the other pilot wounded. That left us with 6 of 10 planes and 5 of 10 pilots active. Second mission that day was ground attack, I was the sole survivor of the flight of 4, leaving us with 3 planes and 2 pilots + 1 wounded.

The next day we received 4 fresh pilots and planes to go with them. So no, it doesn't seem like you can actually run out. You will simply get more planes/pilots transferred in to keep things going. One thing I did notice is the second mission was originally set to have 6 planes in it but was dropped down to 4 since we didn't have enough pilots to go around. So it can potentially cancel missions for that day if you lose all your stuff on a previous mission that day.

The RoF career worked the same way. It would never let you truly run out of planes or pilots, but you could find yourself in little 2-4 man flights constantly. It also has the sad effect of everyone in your squad except you being a newbie with 0 kills and barely being able to takeoff/land without crashing. I don't know if AI skill increases as the bots fly missions and get kills in BoX's career, but it did in RoF. So there is an incentive to keep them alive.

Incidentally, the Bf-109F2 is hilariously outclassed by the MiG-3 in SP.

I know, right? What's up with that?! One time I had to fly an i16, but the rest of the squad all had Migs. They wiped the floor with E7s and F2s. I later checked the mission in the editor and the germans were supposed to be experienced and had one ace.  My guess is that they performed better during the cold weather, since you can close the radiators pretty much all the way on the Mig. And the Boost! My god the boost.

Having understood the system a little better I agree. Maybe they can even prepare an online ladder system showing the best of the best iron man aces, meaning who survived longest and how many kills did he rack up surviving the ironman campaign with his in game alter ego?

Yep heard about Desastersoft and trying the Wick vs. Dundas campaign. Didn´t survive longer than 5 missions so far. You really beginn to think about when, where and how to engage the enemy with such a system in place where you only live once.

Had an escort mission and en-route, noticed a couple of bombers in the weeds heading back for home. Decided to peel off but misjudged their speed and smacked into the back of one while trying to line him up for a pass.

I hope that's a sign of more to come from career mode. Gets quite bland when you have one self-contained mission and you only come across the assigned enemy combatants. Seeing other missions being conducted separate from your own at the same time makes you feel like you're actually participating in an active battlefield.

Hey guys,

Picked this game up after a looong time due to the career mode. Since I only own Stalingrad, will it be possible to transfer your pilot from Stalingrad to Moscow, that is backwards? I know it makes no sense, but just asking if it's a thing :)

Wishing you clear skies and good hunting

I do wish German fighters would energy fight alot more like ground attackers, diving, climbing, going round at a higher altitude, then diving again.

Love the Iron man mode, even though i`ve died 3 times already. Closest you can get to the fear of flying the real thing without actually dying.

Dear friends,

I would like to make a question: does the "Iron Man" option still exists, in the 4.005 update?

Thanks a lot for the attention,

Yes it does. You have to tic it when you start a new career

OK, I have made some research and I think that I understand now the interrelation and possible combinations between "Iron Man", "Unbreakble" and "Invulnerability". I have a new question, now. I have created a Career some months ago, but I don't remember if I configured him as "Iron Man" or not. Any way to discover that?

Thanks in advance,

Felix FdC
