Hauksbee Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 I wanted to set up a Quick Combat Mission with (approx.) ten Ju-52's flying relief into the Stalingrad Kessel. I wanted to lead a flight of three Il-16's to intercept. I chose the 3 vs 3 icon, only to find out that 3 was the max. number allowed on either side. Which icon do I choose to get 10 or 12 opponents?
Jade_Monkey Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 Can't do that in the quick missions. You have to use the mission editor instead.
InProgress Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 (edited) You can, choose 3x3 icon then you can edit it. Just click on these tabs and you can choose numbers, i don't know what max is. But you can have 3 i16 and these 10 ju52. I think you can add 4 to each group maybe more, still 4+4+2 and you have 10. These 3 you are talking about are "flights" not single planes. Each flight has 4 planes max if I am not wrong. You can choose bewteen 1-4 for each. Edited January 10, 2018 by InProgress
Dakpilot Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 Choose the map icon with 3 vs 3 in QM set 'flight 1' JU 52 to 4 aircraft flight 2 JU 52 to 4 aircraft and your own flight to 3 I-16 aircraft and 2nd flight to 0 aircraft you can change loadouts for each flight the max is 4 aircraft per flight, 8 each side, you can have different types in each flight if desired Cheers Dakpilot
Finkeren Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 On a slightly related note: What is the greatest number of aircraft anyone has had in a mission before it brought their rig to its knees? In PWCG I’ve had over 30 planes in the same area at once, and while it brought my FPS down by half, it was still pretty much playable.
Herne Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 you can have 2 flights of four per side in the quick missions. So 8v8

Feathered_IV Posted January 10, 2018 Posted January 10, 2018 AI bombers need a simplified behaviour and FM to the player so they can perform more realistically and in greater numbers. Otherwise we'll never see anything larger than a skirmish in our lifetimes. 2

I have run my LAA Airfield Defense test mission with 48 109s, i Fw190 and 36 K-61s. Playable, but a rather slow FPS which gradually improved, for obvious reasons.

Porkins Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 AI bombers need a simplified behaviour and FM to the player so they can perform more realistically and in greater numbers. Otherwise we'll never see anything larger than a skirmish in our lifetimes. I remember playing IL-2: Birds of Prey on my Xbox 360 five or ten years ago, and in the bomber battles above Britain I swear there were 20-30 planes in the air at a time. The current IL-2 is a great game, but my biggest complaint is the low number of planes in game at once. It never quite feels epic.
Willy__ Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 40 I think, thats when the engine and space time were bent.
Jade_Monkey Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 (edited) It's not always about the number of planes though. I was testing a mission with multiple paratroopers and the second you start dropping them the fps tanks. Edit: Im talking about 8-12 Ju52 dropping them. Edited January 11, 2018 by Jade_Monkey
Finkeren Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 European air war by microphrose, epic game with hundreds planes in the air at once Old game but if you can get too work on a modern pc it’s well worth the effort Hundreds is a bit of an exaggeration, at least as the game was in its original form, but 50+ was very common in a typical intercept mission. Just imagine a flight sim where the smallest unit of aircraft was 12. Even a common sweep consisted of 24-36 fighters and was often met by equal or greater numbers. What really impressed me about EAW was that the AI worked on a tactical squadron level. Squadrons would engage and disengage as one. You could be fighting 24 Bf 109s in your P-51s while escorting a stream of bombers and then suddenly, the guy you were chasing would split-s and dive heading home, the sky would suddenly be cleared of enemies and you got an order to reform formation and continue. Dogfights were generally not fought to the bitter end, interceptors would do maybe 1 or 2 passes on the bombers and then disengage, and dogfights would typically last about 5 minutes after which one side would disengage.
Cpt_Cool Posted January 11, 2018 Posted January 11, 2018 (edited) Hundreds is a bit of an exaggeration, at least as the game was in its original form, 256 at a time was the maximum as far as I can recall. Edited January 11, 2018 by Cpt_Cool
